thing Stuff and Things By kristincashore.blogspot.com Published On :: Sun, 21 Feb 2021 20:21:00 +0000 Hi all,Today I finished a draft of a brand-new writing project. I started it on December 14, which means that I wrote it faster than I've ever written anything. And though I already know a lot of its revision needs, and though the draft isn't really done (because I still have to transcribe an entire notebook of handwritten scribbles), and though I'm feeling that unsettled sense of not being sure yet where I'm going with it… And though I expect it to be a while before I can focus on it again… I feel hopeful about its potential. I've recently (maybe in the past year or so) entered a writing pocket that I call Less Angst. I don't think my writing is any better or worse than it ever was, but I'm enjoying the work more, and worrying about it less. I can probably list a lot of reasons for this, but I suspect the biggest factor is experience. The feelings of doubt and worry, anxiety because the book isn't right yet, uncertainty about how many attempts it will take to get it right… Those feelings have become so deeply familiar to me over the years. I think their familiarity is finally making them easier companions. They don't rock me the way they once did. It's really nice. And maybe this is temporary; maybe I'm in a sweet spot; but I'll take it while it lasts. ????In other news, the release of Winterkeep went so very well, and now it's possible to watch videos of all my virtual book events online. Here are the links:My conversation with Sarah Enni, hosted by Brookline Booksmith. My conversation with Malinda Lo, moderated by Tui Sutherland, hosted by Mysterious Galaxy. My conversation with agent Faye Bender, moderated by editor Andrew Karre, hosted by Books and Books.I have a couple of podcast links to share as well:My conversation with Sarah Enni on First Draft. My conversation with Felicity on the Penguin Teen podcast, We Are YA. I'm also delighted to announce that with the release of Winterkeep, the Graceling Realm hit both the Indie series bestseller list and the NYT series bestseller list, for which I am very grateful. ????Finally, these days, most of my announcements and musings take place over on Twitter, which means that readers of the blog may be missing things… And I feel it's imperative that none of you miss being introduced to my writing companion, February Spiffington. I made him myself, using this sewing kit. Of course I substituted blue felt for his body, because naturally, like all Keepish foxes, he is not red, but blue.Happy reading and writing, everyone! Anything that looks like a spleen Also, why is the spleen the go-to organ for icky descriptions? You never hear someone say, "Hey, that organesque thing sure looks like a gallbladder!" Which begs the questions: is "organesque" a word? 'Cuz if not, it totally should be.6. Shrimp Because shrimp.5. Nipples Hey, don't get me wrong; nipples are great. Heck, I even have one myself. But cake should not have nipples. It just shouldn't. And the fact that I had to bring that sentence into the world makes me seriously question the direction this country is going.4. Ants Because anything I spend time and money trying to kill should not be something I have to pick off my cake.3. Actual Feathers Plucked From Actual Birds Let me get this straight: you jammed real feathers into the icing you expect me to eat?So how about I fetch a beaver pelt and throw that sucker on there, too? Because if there's one thing we've learned about cake decorating, it's that animal outsides are both appetizing and completely sanitary!2. thing 'Leaving was the best thing I did': Employer of 3 years hires new employee at $30k higher than experienced worker, they quit By cheezburger.com Published On :: Sat, 09 Nov 2024 16:00:00 -0800 It's no secret that a lot of employers in as many industries allocate more budget to hiring than they do to staff retention. This is a bit silly when you consider that large organizations will go on to spend tens of thousands of dollars on recruiting, onboarding, and training processes—in addition to value lost due to lost time and productivity of vacant roles. Though some of this cost is silent or not immediately apparent on the books and, in contrast, the idea of approving even half that money in the upfront cost of giving a raise is daunting. While this is an organizational flaw that often occurs, there are, of course, more intentional reasons why employers choose not to give their workers even deserved raises.Whatever the reason or cause, unfortunately, this ends up with a turnover of the most experienced staff who are frustrated at their own lack of advancement and pay that is falling behind the market rate, discovering that new hires are being paid more than them despite their experience and contribution. That's what this worker in a "niche" field discovered had happened when they learned that their employer of 3 years had hired a new hire at $30k more than they were currently earning. Frustrated, they found a new job as fast as possible. thing Mother appoints her brother to be her 3 under 10-year-old children's unpaid personal chef: '[She] expect[s] me to make something every day for the kids' By cheezburger.com Published On :: Mon, 11 Nov 2024 15:00:00 -0800 Meals are undoubtedly one of the most important daily chores, along with sleep. Being properly fed is one of the things that everything else in a successful and happy life stems from. But providing healthy meals for your family isn't cheap… Have you seen the price of groceries these days? And the time it takes to cook and clean for an entire family can't be understated. So, undoubtedly, the combination of those two things, the time and the price of the actual food, would be supremely valuable. Of course, you can just trick your sous-chef brother into cooking for your three children instead. Surely, if he's willing to do it once for free, you can just ask him to do it again and again. Even when it comes to family, there's a limit to the favors you're expected to perform, and there's a point where demanding favors just becomes freeloading and entitlement. thing Employee refuses to respond to boss's email asking to reconsider their resignation, instead decides to air out everything they think about their boss: ‘[You] are useless’ By cheezburger.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 04:00:00 -0800 There is an episode in How I Met Your Mother where Marshall gets yelled at by his terrible boss, and he doesn't know how he should react. His friends all give him different advice, some saying he should ignore it, while others said he should kindly confront his boss and put him in his place. Eventually, Marshall unexpectedly explodes at his boss and screams back at him with everything he thinks of his job and the management, and at the end of this screaming fit, Marshall quits. While it is just a TV show, many employees encounter moments like these in real life, where they just can't keep everything in, especially regarding their bosses. The employee in this Reddit story had considered doing exactly what Marshall did after they resigned. They sent their notice in an email to their boss, and after the boss asked them to reconsider, they debated whether they should give said terrible boss a piece of their minds.Keep scrolling to read the full story. thing 'What a grinchy thing to do': Woman surprises grandmother with incorrectly labelled gift card after "joking" about it By cheezburger.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 14:00:00 -0800 The entire family is giving this woman the side-eye after she did something strange during a gift exchange. Instead of getting an individual present for every member of your family, some families choose to do Secret Santa gift exchanges. It's a good way to add some fun to the typical present exchange. Everyone is assigned a family member to gift a nice present to in secret. Then, when the present is opened, the person usually finds out who gave it to them. It's a sweet tradition that allows each person to be really thoughtful about their present without breaking the bank. After all, it can be way easier to give one $50 present to one person rather than 10 or 15 individual gifts to everyone in the family. This person is being called out for acting a bit stingy. If she was having financial trouble, maybe she should've quietly talked to the Secret Santa organizer. Instead, money troubles or not, she's making a bad impression on everyone else, and commenters agreed that what she did was kind of tacky. Up next, this neighbor decided that she had an issue with one family's boat: it was in view, so she decided it had to be moved ASAP. thing 'I am not allowed to do anything': Retail worker faces down angry parents after colleague sells parents the wrong computer for kid's gaming ambitions, prevented from helping them by silly company policy By cheezburger.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 15:00:00 -0800 Working retail is a hectic and endless stream of customer interactions that balance on a knife's edge, with any one of them threatening to teeter off into a full-blown customer meltdown with possibly little to no cause. It's a way of living that leaves you emotionally drained and completely exasperated, while weekends end up giving you just enough time to self-isolate and prepare for your next shift.Meanwhile, despite claiming to have the customer's best interest at heart, upper management makes decisions that only serve to maximize their own bonuses and profit, putting you directly in the firing line for even more hostile interactions with customers. They'll enact some broad-sweeping policy that flies in the face of logical reason and expect you to follow it to the letter, vaguely implying serious consequences should you not blindly obey and refuse to listen to the insistence of everyone that their plan is a bad one. Then, acting like it's the worker's fault when they receive customer complaints about their policy.
