The Church Is The Greatest Movie Trailer Ever

How the church can be a foretaste of heaven.

The purpose of a movie trailer is to give highlights of a forthcoming movie, creating “buzz” about it. And the ”buzz” compels people to see the movie. For example, the trailers for Avengers: Age of Ultron were incredible. They were so enticing that I couldn’t wait for the movie to arrive in theaters.

The church is a movie trailer

Did you know that the local church is to be like a movie trailer for the eternal church? The apostle John describes the eternal church in Revelation 5:6–12:

“And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, reach holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying,

’Worthy are you to take the scroll

and to open its seals,

for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God

from every tribe and language and people and nation,

and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,

and they shall reign on the earth.’

Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice,

’Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,

to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might

and honor and glory and blessing!’” (ESV).

The eternal ...

Guest Commentary: A restaurant owner anticipates Easter during a pandemic: “The hell with it. Amen.”

On the 17th day of our lockdown, I sat on an empty barstool at my 3-year-old, all-day fine-dining eatery, which had essentially been converted to a fast food, to-go joint.  It was a bitter cold, miserable, snowy spring night, and I said to myself, “the hell with it." (Actually, I used stronger words, but can't use them in a family newspaper.)

Guest Commentary: Vaping is a lifeline for me

The first time I smoked a cigarette, I was 14 years old. By the time I was an adult, I was smoking two packs a day. I tried the nicotine patch, gum, and even Chantix, the pharmaceutical drug, to quit smoking cigarettes. None of these worked. I’m embarrassed to say that I even tried hypnosis. It wasn’t until I tried vaping as an adult that I was able to find a solution and quit smoking those dreadful cigarettes. Vaping was so effective, I quit smoking cigarettes in one weekend after 20 years of addictive cigarette smoking. I’m one of the 350,000 Coloradans and one of approximate 13 million responsible adults in America who have used vaping products to quit smoking more harmful cigarettes.

Encompass Insurance Co. v. Stone Mansion Restaurant Inc.

(United States Third Circuit) - Held that an automobile insurance company that settled claims against a driver arising out of a car crash could bring a contribution suit against a restaurant that allegedly over-served alcoholic beverages to the driver. The restaurant insisted that Pennsylvania's Dram Shop Law subjected it to liability only to injured individuals themselves. However, the Third Circuit concluded that the Dram Shop Law did not prevent the insurance company from bringing a suit against the restaurant under the Uniform Contribution Among Tortfeasors Act. The panel therefore reversed dismissal of the insurer's complaint.

Preston v. Superintendent Graterford SCI

(United States Third Circuit) - Affirmed the denial of habeas relief to a defendant who alleged violation of his Confrontation Clause rights. The defendant, who was convicted of third-degree murder, challenged the use of prior statements of a witness who refused to answer any substantive questions on cross-examination. While agreeing that the defendant's rights were violated, the Third Circuit concluded that his Confrontation Clause claim was procedurally defaulted and there was no cause to excuse the default here.

Trinity 83 Development LLC v. ColFin Midwest Funding LLC

(United States Seventh Circuit) - Rejected a mootness argument in a dispute between an insolvent borrower and the holder of a mortgage note. Overruled In re River West Plaza-Chicago LLC, 664 F.3d 668 (7th Cir. 2011), holding that 11 U.S.C. section 363(m) does not make any dispute moot or prevent a bankruptcy court from deciding what shall be done with the proceeds of a sale or lease.

Garvin v. Cook Investments NW, SPNWY, LLC

(United States Ninth Circuit) - Affirmed a real estate business's Chapter 11 reorganization plan. Held that the plan was lawfully proposed even though a lessee illegally grew marijuana. Rejected a challenge brought by the United States Trustee.

est

Double Eagle Energy Services v. MarkWest Utica EMG

(United States Fifth Circuit) - Vacated and remanded. Subject matter jurisdiction is determined when the federal court's jurisdiction is first invoked, so although subsequent changes eliminated the basis for jurisdiction the propriety at the time of filing supported the continuation of the case.

est

Ergon-West Virginia, Inc. v. EPA

(United States Fourth Circuit) - Vacated the denial of an exemption from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's renewable fuel standard program. A small refinery sought an extension of its exemption from EPA's renewable fuel standard program, which requires refineries and other facilities to allocate a certain percentage of their fuel production to renewable fuels. When the EPA denied the request for an extension, the refinery petitioned the Fourth Circuit, which concluded that the EPA's decision was arbitrary and capricious. The panel therefore vacated the EPA's denial and remanded for further proceedings.

est

Sierra Club, Inc. v. U.S. Forest Service

(United States Fourth Circuit) - Vacated federal agency decisions approving construction of a natural gas pipeline through a national forest. Several environmental groups challenged the Bureau of Land Management's and U.S. Forest Service's rulings allowing the pipeline to be built. On a petition for review, the Fourth Circuit agreed with the environmental groups that the federal agencies failed to fully comply with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Mineral Leasing Act, and the National Forest Management Act, and therefore the appeals court vacated and remanded to the agencies for further proceedings.
