economy The best and the worst of Los Angeles' economy By www.scpr.org Published On :: Tue, 17 Sep 2013 12:44:37 -0700 Business Update with Mark LacterWhen talk turns to the economy, it's clear that LA brings out the best and the worst. Steve Julian: Business analyst Mark Lacter, where do you see the best of it here? Mark Lacter: You see the best of the economy, Steve, with all kinds of startup activity - much of it tech-related - and you also see the large number of auto sales, the improved housing market, and the record number of people visiting Southern California - all indications of a growing economy. But then, you have the other L.A. economy, with large numbers of families struggling to make ends meet, and seeing very little sign of recovery. You know, the government has been releasing income data covering the last few years, and what you see is that the disparity between the richest 1 percent and the other 99 percent is at its widest point since the 1920s. You especially see that kind of bifurcated economy in Southern California, which has some of the wealthiest people in the country, and also some of the poorest. Julian: Now, the split between rich and poor has been happening for a good long time, hasn't it? Lacter: Yes, but L.A. is in a special class because there are so many immigrants with limited job skills - in fact, a new study by the UCLA Anderson Forecast says it's a much higher percentage than immigrants living in Miami, San Francisco, and New York. What's interesting is that 20 years ago the job skills among immigrants were significantly higher in L.A. Limited job skills mean there's very little opportunity to move up the income ladder. That factors into buying homes, sending your kids to college - really becoming part of the middle class. Julian: I imagine that's particularly true for factory work… Lacter: Yes, some of the same jobs that newly-arrived immigrants in previous generations would gravitate to. Today, many of those jobs are gone, and they're being replaced by positions that require greater skill that's borne out of greater education. And that, of course, is another problem: a sizable percentage of recently-arrived immigrants never finished high school, much less college, and that makes it even less likely that they'll be able to move up. Julian: Related, or unrelated, to the recession? Lacter: Actually, L.A. had serious income inequality in December of 2006, before the recession, when the county's unemployment rate was just 4.3 percent - a stunningly low rate when you consider that as of July, the jobless rate was almost 10 percent. This points out that the division of haves and have-nots can happen even when the economy is doing well. Julian: And it seems the last C-17 to be built for Air Force is a reminder of wage gap. Lacter: That's right - it'll be up to foreign customers to keep the program in Long Beach alive. Boeing currently has an order from India for 10 of the cargo planes, which will keep the line moving through the third quarter of next year. Frankly, the only reason the C-17 has lasted this long is heavy political pressure by congressional lawmakers whose districts have an economic stake in the program. At one time, as many as 16,000 people may have worked on the C-17 in Long Beach, but that number has fallen sharply over the years. Julian: Still, this is the last airplane manufacturing plant in Southern California. Lacter: And that, of course, speaks volumes about the state of the aerospace business, which had been one of the main economic drivers back in the days leading up to World War II. Aerospace continued to be very important until the end of the Cold War, when you had a huge industry consolidation that resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of local jobs throughout the 1990s. There's still quite a bit of aerospace activity locally that involves missiles, satellites, and electronics - both for the major defense contractors like Boeing and Northrop, and for smaller contractors and sub-subcontractors that still get a piece of the military pie. Julian: But most of them require high skill levels… Lacter: Yes, and that gets us back to the folks who are stuck in low-paying jobs with little prospect for moving up. This is what the L.A. economy is all about, the good and the bad. Mark Lacter writes for Los Angeles Magazine and pens the business blog at LA Observed.com. economy Nice Design Touches in Cathay-Pacific's New Premium Economy Seats By www.core77.com Published On :: For those of us who can't afford to fly Business Class, design studio JPA has designed a better Premium Economy seat. The new design takes cues from a wingback chair, providing greater privacy on either side of your head. A nice, unexpectedly elegant design touch is this reading light integrated into the headrest. Thigh support is offered when the seats recline. There's also a footrest you can fold down. The seatback monitors are gigantic, and the seatback tray has been replaced with a phone/tablet tray, in case you want to supplant the onboard programming with your own. The trays are now located in the armrests. The non-tray armrests of each seat feature a storage compartment with a light and a USB-C port. Between the seats, on the center console are conventional power outlets. The new seat designs are slated for Cathay-Pacific's 777-300ER wide-body planes. economy The Biggest Reason Why the U.S. Needs Small Businesses to Thrive Has Nothing to Do With Taxes or the Economy By www.small-business-software.net Published On :: Mon, 31 Dec 2018 09:28:15 -0500 Despite recent stock market turmoil, everywhere you looked this year someone was heralding the strength of the economy, which grew at 3.5 percent in the third quarter. However, not all economic growth favors small businesses, and some even detracts from it. The Inc. Entrepreneurship Index, which measures the quarterly health of the U.S. startup economy, currently sits at 83 out of 100 for the third quarter of 2018. This is down two points from the second quarter and a full nine points from the first quarter of 2017, when our Index peaked. Our indicator sees one factor in particular still dragging like an anchor on the startup economy: job growth. Even though overall economic conditions have been largely favorable, small businesses have hit a growth ceiling as larger companies--bolstered by generally strong market conditions, favorable tax policies, support from local governments, and easing federal regulations--have been gobbling up talent. This is why, for the past year, the Index has shown a startup economy that is strong but slowing. complete article Full Article

economy BSA Gold Star 650 real world fuel economy tested, explained By www.autocarindia.com Published On :: Sat, 26 Oct 2024 07:00:00 +1000 The made-in-India BSA Gold Star 650 has been available overseas for a couple of years but Classic Legends has now launched the bike in India. That gave us a chance to pit it against its closest competitor, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and also to see how fuel efficient the engine is BSA Gold Star 650 real world fuel efficiency Our fuel efficiency tests are split into separate city and highway runs. The city run was conducted on a variety of roads in South Mumbai with everything from jam packed traffic under the JJ Flyover to faster, more flowing traffic down Marine drive. After covering over 40km, the bike returned 22.96kpl. With that completed, we then covered about 60 kilometres of highway riding while holding speeds of 70-80kph. In this test, the BSA Gold Star’s mileage increased to 29.14kpl. BSA Gold Star 650: fuel economy analysis It is worth noting that while these numbers are a little lower than the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, the BSA actually proved to be slightly quicker in our performance tests, despite being tested in wet conditions. The Gold Star weighs slightly less than the Enfield, but its big single cannot match the RE’s smooth parallel twin engine when it comes to fuel efficiency, although it makes up for this with more low and midrange torque than any other made in India motorcycle. Autocar India’s fuel efficiency testing Our fuel efficiency testing routine starts off by first brimming the tank and ensuring that the bike is running the manufacturer's recommended tyre pressures. The bike is then ridden on fixed city and highway routes, where we maintain pre-decided average speeds that best mimic real-world scenarios for the bike in question. The payload on the bikes is kept constant by balancing rider weights and ballast, ensuring consistency across different vehicles and riders. At the end of the test cycle, the fuel tank is once again filled to the brim, giving us an accurate figure of how much fuel has been consumed, against the trip metre reading. We’ve managed to spend an extended duration with the Pulsar NS400Z and put it through our testing cycles to find its real-world fuel efficiency. Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z real world fuel efficiency We ran the Pulsar NS400Z for a little over 60km on the highway in top gear at 70-80kph which is the speed limit on the section of the highway where we conduct our testing. At the end of it the motorcycle is topped up again which worked out to a fuel efficiency figure of 29.62kpl. We conducted the same test inside the city where we ran the NS400Z for just under 50km and through mixed traffic conditions. At the end of our run we filled it to the brim, which resulted in a fuel economy figure of 27.52kpl. Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z: fuel economy analysis The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is equipped with the same engine found in the Dominar 400 and can trace its roots back to the Gen 1 KTM 390 Duke. The NS400Z is lighter than the Dominar 400 which enables it with much better performance and efficiency. The NS400Z packs a rev happy, easy going motor that packs plenty of performance under its belt. However, the NS400Z tends to vibrate at higher revs and this becomes quite evident when cruising at higher speeds. economy Design of an intelligent financial sharing platform driven by digital economy and its role in optimising accounting transformation production By www.inderscience.com Published On :: 2024-07-02T23:20:50-05:00 With the expansion of business scope, the environment faced by enterprises has also changed, and competition is becoming increasingly fierce. Traditional financial systems are increasingly difficult to handle complex tasks and predict potential financial risks. In the context of the digital economy era, the booming financial sharing services have reduced labour costs and improved operational efficiency. This paper designs and implements an intelligent financial sharing platform, establishes a fund payment risk early warning model based on an improved support vector machine algorithm, and tests it on the Financial Distress Prediction dataset. The experimental results show that the effectiveness of using F2 score and AUC evaluation methods can reach 0.9484 and 0.9023, respectively. After using this system, the average financial processing time per order decreases by 43%, and the overall financial processing time decreases by 27%. Finally, this paper discusses the role of intelligent financial sharing platform in accounting transformation and optimisation of production. Full Article

economy Knowledge Management Orientation, Market Orientation, and SME’s Performance: A Lesson from Indonesia’s Creative Economy Sector By Published On :: 2018-07-16 Aim/Purpose: Two research objectives were addressed in this study. The first objective was to determine the effect of knowledge management orientation behaviour on business performance, and the second objective was to investigate the mediating effect of market orientation in the relationship between knowledge management orientation behaviour and business performance. Background: In business strategic perspective, the idea of knowledge management has been discussed widely. However, there is a lack of study exploring the notion of knowledge management orientation especially in the perspective of Indonesia’s creative economy sector. Methodology: One hundred and thirty one participants were involved in this study. They were economy creative practitioners in Indonesia. Data were analysed by using Partial Least Squares. Contribution: Upon the completion of the research objectives, this study contributes to both theoretical and practical perspectives. From a theoretical standpoint, this study proposes a conceptual model explaining the relationship among knowledge management orientation behaviour, market orientation, and business performance in Indonesia’s creative economy sector. As this study found a significant effect of knowledge sharing in market orientation and market orientation in business performance, the study showed the mediation role of market orientation in the relationship between knowledge sharing and business performance. From a practical perspective, this study implies a guideline for business practitioners in enhancing business through the application of knowledge management orientation behaviour. Findings: The results show that organizing memory, knowledge absorption, and knowledge receptivity has a direct significant effect on business performance. However, in affecting business performance, knowledge sharing must be mediated by market orientation. Recommendations for Practitioners: Based on the results of the study, practitioners should enhance their behaviour in implementing knowledge management in terms of increasing business performance. In addition, it is suggested that business practitioners must be market driven, as market orientation was found to have an important role in affecting business performance. Recommendation for Researchers: Future researchers might integrate other constructs such as innovation, marketing capabilities, or organizational learning with this current conceptual model to have more comprehensive insight about the relationship between knowledge management orientation and business performance. Impact on Society: This study suggests that business practitioners must have knowledge management driven behaviour as well as market orientation to enhance the performance of their business. Future Research: Future research might add other variables to make the conceptual model more comprehensive and also replicate this study into different industrial settings. Full Article
economy Talent development for the knowledge economy By www.inderscience.com Published On :: 2024-03-06T23:20:50-05:00 The world's economies are attempting to transform themselves to have a greater focus on developing knowledge as a commodity through innovation. Innovation starts with a creative activity that yields an invention but is augmented through a systematic value driven knowledge management system to yield new knowledge that can create a competitive advantage. To succeed in such an economy, organisations must have or develop the talent that can produce and use information effectively, they must have an ambidextrous organisational structure that allows them to innovate and produce simultaneously, and they must have an innovation management system to sustain effective innovation. In this paper we show how to augment existing university courses to simultaneously develop subject matter and innovation skills in students. We also suggest the incorporation of the new Innovations Management System Standard Series ISO 56000 into business curricula to better prepare students to function in the knowledge economy.
