The Brexit debate needs more tolerance on both sides | Michael White

Bad sportsmanship is not confined to either camp. Let’s have more signs of mutual respect across the divide

I’m trying to cure this summer’s unattractive impulse before it turns into a bad habit. Whenever I see someone doing something stupid or self-harming like jumping an orange light on a bike or getting tattooed from neck to ankle, I want to shout: “Brexit voter.”

It’s not nice and it’s not fair. I’m trying to stop. As Theresa May’s divided cabinet meets to decide where to go next, ministers and demoralised Whitehall officials should refrain from recrimination too. The “phoney war” lull before the negotiation storm is about to end.

Marine Energy Making Waves on Both Sides of the Pond

In recent months, a number of initiatives aimed at speeding up the development of the wave energy sector have been launched in the U.S. and Europe. As part of the ongoing work to establish a viable United States wave energy industry, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories (SANDIA) are working on the creation of a sophisticated open-source modeling tool known as WEC-Sim — and the U.S. Department of Energy is also enlisting the coding community to help in its development. Meanwhile, the European WavePOD project is an industry-wide initiative that aims to solve the problem of converting captured wave energy into electricity by creating a "standardised self-contained offshore electricity generator for the wave industry."

Johnson Starmer both know true exit plan means reducing our freedoms

Taking Britain safely out of lockdown will necessitate unpopular policies of more spending and surveillance

A commonplace criticism of political parties is that they have drifted “into their comfort zone”, which mostly means that Labour talks a lot about raising spending, while the Conservatives talk about cutting taxes. But politicians have comfort zones that are operational as well as ideological: ways of working that they find more attractive than others.

In late 2014, one ambitious young shadow cabinet minister asked his aides to draw up a 14-point plan to help him become leader of the Labour party. Step two involved an itemised list of Labour MPs, each of whom, he was told, he needed to wine and dine if he was to have any hope of making a successful bid at the job. The frontbencher in question contemplated evening after evening spent in conversation with his colleagues versus time spent with his wife and children. Surely, he reasoned, he could achieve the same end by writing thoughtful columns in the newspapers and delivering wide-ranging speeches? His leadership bid never recovered.

Figures and feelings both count, as a matter of fact

In Henrik Ibsen’s play, An Enemy of the People, a town is divided over whether or not to clean up the municipal baths following a water contamination report. But a doctor’s good intentions to save the town come up against special interests. In the end, the facts are rejected, the truth reshaped and the water is not cleansed. As for the doctor, he is cast out as the enemy.

Crystal structure of a new phenyl(morpholino)methanethione derivative: 4-[(morpholin-4-yl)carbothioyl]benzoic acid

4-[(Morpholin-4-yl)carbothioyl]benzoic acid, C12H13NO3S, a novel phenyl(morpholino)methanethione derivative, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n. The morpholine ring adopts a chair conformation and the carboxylic acid group is bent out slightly from the benzene ring mean plane. The molecular geometry of the carboxylic group is characterized by similar C—O bond lengths [1.266 (2) and 1.268 (2) Å] as the carboxylate H atom is disordered over two positions. This molecular arrangement leads to the formation of dimers through strong and centrosymmetric low barrier O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the carboxylic groups. In addition to these intermolecular interactions, the crystal packing consists of two different molecular sheets with an angle between their mean planes of 64.4 (2)°. The cohesion between the different layers is ensured by C—H⋯S and C—H⋯O interactions.

Crystal structures of {1,1,1-tris[(salicylaldimino)methyl]ethane}gallium as both a pyridine solvate and an acetonitrile 0.75-solvate and {1,1,1-tris[(salicylaldimino)methyl]ethane}indium dichloro

The sexadentate ligand 1,1,1-tris[(salicylideneamino)methyl]ethane has been reported numerous times in its triply deprotonated form coordinated to transition metals and lanthanides, yet it has been rarely employed with main-group elements, including in substituted forms. Its structures with gallium and indium are reported as solvates, namely, ({[(2,2-bis{[(2-oxidobenzylidene)amino-κ2N,O]methyl}propyl)imino]methyl}phenololato-κ2N,O)gallium(III) pyridine monosolvate, [Ga(C26H24N3O3)]·C5H5N, the acetonitrile 0.75-solvate, [Ga(C26H24N3O3)]·0.75C2H3N, and ({[(2,2-bis{[(2-oxidobenzylidene)amino-κ2N,O]methyl}propyl)imino]methyl}phenololato-κ2N,O)indium(III) dichloromethane monosolvate, [In(C26H24N3O3)]·CH2Cl2. All three metal complexes are pseudo-octahedral and each structure contains multiple weak C—H⋯O and/or C—H⋯N intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. The syntheses and additional characterization in the forms of melting points, high-resolution mass spectra, infra-red (IR) spectra, and 1H and 13C NMR spectra are also reported.
