By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Wed, 12 Oct 2011 12:30:00 -0700 “What is deceptive, especially in the West, is our assumption that repetitive and mindless jobs are dehumanizing. On the other hand, the jobs that require us to use the abilities that are uniquely human, we assume to be humanizing. This is not necessarily true. The determining factor is not so much the nature of our jobs, but for whom they serve. ‘Burnout’ is a result of consuming yourself for something other than yourself. You could be burnt out for an abstract concept, ideal, or even nothing (predicament). You end up burning yourself as fuel for something or someone else. This is what feels dehumanizing. In repetitive physical jobs, you could burn out your body for something other than yourself. In creative jobs, you could burn out your soul. Either way, it would be dehumanizing. Completely mindless jobs and incessantly mindful jobs could both be harmful to us.” - Dsyke Suematsu from his white paper discussed at Why Ad People Burn Out. Full Article Dsyke Suematsu

ind 9 Ways To Focus A Wandering Mind By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Thu, 16 Apr 2020 16:39:51 +0000 As everyone has made the temporary shift to WFH (work from home), many are surrounded by distractions. The 9 ways to focus a wandering mind infographic originally from On Stride Financial in the UK and now published on Headway Capital, offers simple ways to help you refocus. It’s probably no surprise that the human mind has a tendency to wander. Scientific research has discovered that this trait is almost ubiquitous among humans, and most of us experience it regularly..Constant mind wandering is a source of frustration for many people. In their study “A Wandering Mind is an Unhappy Mind,” researchers found that that experiencing a regular lack of concentration has a negative impact on overall mood and state of mind. In short, people were less happy when their minds wandered.Luckily, research into ways of combating this phenomenon is also plentiful. And while we may never be able to eliminate our mind’s propensity for wandering, there are lots of simple techniques that can help improve concentration and focus.Next time you’re feeling a little distracted, try out some of these techniques and see if you can bring your mind back on task.A little text-heavy design, but the illustrations help with each section. The comprehensive sources help establish the credibility of the information, and the infographic landing page includes clickable links to all of the source material. After all…see if you follow me here… it’s just wrong to make a book about creativity with just any old trend, cliche book cover. Instead, the package needed to embody the ideas within. ind Nonlinear singular problems with indefinite potential term. (arXiv:2005.01789v3 [math.AP] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. In the reaction we have the competing effects of a singular term and of concave and convex nonlinearities. In this paper the concave term is parametric. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the positive parameter $lambda$ varies. This work continues our research published in arXiv:2004.12583, where $xi equiv 0 $ and in the reaction the parametric term is the singular one. Full Article
ind Approximate Two-Sphere One-Cylinder Inequality in Parabolic Periodic Homogenization. (arXiv:2005.00989v2 [math.AP] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: In this paper, for a family of second-order parabolic equation with rapidly oscillating and time-dependent periodic coefficients, we are interested in an approximate two-sphere one-cylinder inequality for these solutions in parabolic periodic homogenization, which implies an approximate quantitative propagation of smallness. The proof relies on the asymptotic behavior of fundamental solutions and the Lagrange interpolation technique. Full Article
ind Three-point Functions in $mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at Finite $N_c$ and Background Independence. (arXiv:2002.07216v2 [hep-th] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: We compute non-extremal three-point functions of scalar operators in $mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills at tree-level in $g_{YM}$ and at finite $N_c$, using the operator basis of the restricted Schur characters. We make use of the diagrammatic methods called quiver calculus to simplify the three-point functions. The results involve an invariant product of the generalized Racah-Wigner tensors ($6j$ symbols). Assuming that the invariant product is written by the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, we show that the non-extremal three-point functions satisfy the large $N_c$ background independence; correspondence between the string excitations on $AdS_5 imes S^5$ and those in the LLM geometry. ind Extremal values of the Sackin balance index for rooted binary trees. (arXiv:1801.10418v5 [q-bio.PE] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Tree balance plays an important role in different research areas like theoretical computer science and mathematical phylogenetics. For example, it has long been known that under the Yule model, a pure birth process, imbalanced trees are more likely than balanced ones. Therefore, different methods to measure the balance of trees were introduced. The Sackin index is one of the most frequently used measures for this purpose. In many contexts, statements about the minimal and maximal values of this index have been discussed, but formal proofs have never been provided. Moreover, while the number of trees with maximal Sackin index as well as the number of trees with minimal Sackin index when the number of leaves is a power of 2 are relatively easy to understand, the number of trees with minimal Sackin index for all other numbers of leaves was completely unknown. In this manuscript, we fully characterize trees with minimal and maximal Sackin index and also provide formulas to explicitly calculate the number of such trees. Full Article

ind Steiner symmetry in the minimization of the principal positive eigenvalue of an eigenvalue problem with indefinite weight. (arXiv:2005.03581v1 [math.AP]) By arxiv.org Published On :: In cite{CC} the authors, investigating a model of population dynamics, find the following result. Let $Omegasubset mathbb{R}^N$, $Ngeq 1$, be a bounded smooth domain. The weighted eigenvalue problem $-Delta u =lambda m u $ in $Omega$ under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $lambda in mathbb{R}$ and $min L^infty(Omega)$, is considered. The authors prove the existence of minimizers $check m$ of the principal positive eigenvalue $lambda_1(m)$ when $m$ varies in a class $mathcal{M}$ of functions where average, maximum, and minimum values are given. A similar result is obtained in cite{CCP} when $m$ is in the class $mathcal{G}(m_0)$ of rearrangements of a fixed $m_0in L^infty(Omega)$. In our work we establish that, if $Omega$ is Steiner symmetric, then every minimizer in cite{CC,CCP} inherits the same kind of symmetry. Full Article

(arXiv:2005.03308v1 [math.SP]) By arxiv.org Published On :: Let $Gamma$ be a discrete group acting properly discontinuously and isometrically on the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space $mathrm{AdS}^{3}$, and $square$ the Laplacian which is a second-order hyperbolic differential operator. We study linear independence of a family of generalized Poincar'{e} series introduced by Kassel-Kobayashi [Adv. Math. 2016], which are defined by the $Gamma$-average of certain eigenfunctions on $mathrm{AdS}^{3}$. We prove that the multiplicities of $L^{2}$-eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian $square$ on $Gammaackslashmathrm{AdS}^{3}$ are unbounded when $Gamma$ is finitely generated. Moreover, we prove that the multiplicities of extit{stable $L^{2}$-eigenvalues} for compact anti-de Sitter $3$-manifolds are unbounded. Full Article
ind On a kind of self-similar sets with complete overlaps. (arXiv:2005.03280v1 [math.DS]) By arxiv.org Published On :: Let $E$ be the self-similar set generated by the {it iterated function system} {[ f_0(x)=frac{x}{eta},quad f_1(x)=frac{x+1}{eta}, quad f_{eta+1}=frac{x+eta+1}{eta} ]}with $etage 3$. {Then} $E$ is a self-similar set with complete {overlaps}, i.e., $f_{0}circ f_{eta+1}=f_{1}circ f_1$, but $E$ is not totally self-similar. We investigate all its generating iterated function systems, give the spectrum of $E$, and determine the Hausdorff dimension and Hausdorff measure of $E$ and of the sets which contain all points in $E$ having finite or infinite different triadic codings.
