(United States Ninth Circuit) - Revived claims that manufacturers of chocolate products and other firms in the industry aided and abetted child slave labor on Ivory Coast cocoa farms. The companies contended that the complaint sought an impermissible extraterritorial application of the Alien Tort Statute. Reversing a dismissal order in relevant part, the Ninth Circuit held that the former child slaves must be allowed to amend their proposed class action complaint.

(California Court of Appeal) - In a suit for negligence and willful misconduct against soccer league defendants, arising out of the sexual abuse of plaintiff by her former soccer coach, the trial court's judgment sustaining defendants' demurrers to the fourth amended complaint on the ground that they had no duty to protect plaintiff from criminal conduct by a third party and dismissing the defendants is reversed where defendants had a duty to conduct criminal background checks of all adults who would have contact with children involved in their programs.

(United States DC Circuit) - Affirming. Doe is a US citizen in the custody of the Department of Defense after his capture in Syria. He sought to prevent his transfer during the pendancy of a habeas corpus claim since this would place him outside of the court's jurisdiction. The court affirmed a district court injunction barring the government from transferring Doe to Country B, and the injunction requiring 72 hours notice before transfer to Country A.

Claims of breach of contract, emotional distress, negligence, and promissory estoppel arising from disciplinary action taken by a school against a student accused of sexual assault after extensive proceedings were defective and the case was properly dismissed.

(United States First Circuit) - Reinstated a lawsuit alleging that a health insurance company improperly denied coverage for in-patient mental health services. After several unsuccessful administrative appeals, the insured sued the insurance company under ERISA, claiming that all of her time spent at a mental health residential treatment facility was medically necessary and thus should have been covered under an employer-provided healthcare plan. On appeal, the First Circuit vacated an order granting summary judgment for the insurance company, holding that the district court should have allowed the insured to supplement the administrative record.

Do new societal needs increase charitable giving or simply reallocate a fixed supply of donations? We study this question using IRS datasets and the natural experiment of deadly tornadoes. Among ZIP Codes located more than 20 miles away from a tornado's path, donations by households increase by over $1 million per tornado fatality. We find no negative effects on charities located in these ZIP Codes, with a bootstrapped confidence interval that rejects substitution rates above 16 percent. The results imply that giving to one cause need not come at the expense of another.

Recent research has highlighted unequal treatment for women in academic economics along several different dimensions, including promotion, hiring, credit for co-authorship, and standards for publication in professional journals. Can the source of these differences lie in biases against women that are pervasive in the discipline, even among students in the earliest stages of their training? In this paper, we provide evidence on the importance of explicit and implicit biases against women among students in economics relative to other fields. We conducted a large scale survey among undergraduate students in Chilean universities, among both entering first-year students and students in years 2 and above. On a wide battery of measures, economics students are more biased than students in other fields. Economics students are somewhat more biased already upon entry, before exposure to any economics classes. The gap is more pronounced among students in years 2 and above, in particular for male students. We also find an increase in bias in a sample of students that we follow longitudinally. Differences in political ideology explain essentially all the gap at entry, but none of the increase in the gap with exposure. Exposure to female students and faculty attenuates some of the bias.
