cuba Cuban leaders try to sweep major blackout problem under the worn-out rug By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Tue, 22 Oct 2024 20:31:00 +0300 The October 18 blackout paralyzed Cuba completely. The Cuban government tries to shrug the problem off by making references to the economic blockade, although the leadership of the island of freedom with no electricity should rather look at its own effectiveness. Total blackout in Cuba: three days without electricity and water Blackout, or apagon in Spanish, is a long-standing problem in Cuba that the island nation has been living with since the 1970s. Yet, this is the first time when the country experienced such a large-scale accident. On Friday, October 18, the Cuban electrical system was completely shut down as a result of an emergency at its main thermal power plant Antonio Guteras in Matanzas. This thermal power plant has not been modernized since 1988. The Cubans had to live without electricity and water for three days. All institutions and industries stopped and thus put the country's security in jeopardy. Full Article World
cuba Tropical Storm Elsa Is Lashing Cuba And Has Florida Next In Its Sights By www.scpr.org Published On :: Mon, 05 Jul 2021 10:00:09 -0700 Dan Charles | NPR Updated July 5, 2021 at 11:33 AM ET A tropical storm with 65-mile-an-hour winds is drenching Cuba, and is expected to reach Key West and the west coast of Florida within the next 48 hours. The National Hurricane Center expects Tropical Storm Elsa to drop between 5 and 10 inches of rain on central and western Cuba, leading to significant flooding and mudslides. The storm probably will weaken somewhat as it crosses the island, but could strengthen again as it approaches Florida. According to the Associated Press, Cuban officials evacuated 180,000 people as a precaution against the possibility of heavy flooding. Most of those evacuated stayed at relatives' homes, others went to government shelters, and hundreds living in mountainous areas took refuge in caves prepared for emergencies. The storm had killed at least three people on other Caribbean islands before it reached Cuba The National Weather Service says that the western coast of Florida, including Tampa Bay, can expect a storm surge that would lift water levels between two and four feet. Much of Florida could see heavy rainfall that could reach six inches in some places. The storm will then bring heavy rains to Georgia and the Carolinas later in the week. Florida officials were worried that the storm could destabilize what was left of the condominium building that partially collapsed over a week ago. In order to avoid an uncontrolled collapse, they approved the demolition of the remaining portion of the building, which took place on Sunday night. "The hurricane was coming, the potential for that building to fall on the pile with the victims in it was a tragic thought," Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told NPR on Monday. It's early in the hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a busier-than-average Atlantic hurricane season, but it would be hard to top last year's, which set an all-time record with 30 named storms. Tropical storms are fueled by warm water in the upper layers of the ocean, and ocean temperatures have been rising as heat is trapped by greenhouse gases. Copyright 2021 NPR. cuba Illustration for Impact: HART Curatorship Incubation Programme Visuals By abduzeedo.com Published On :: Fri, 08 Nov 2024 16:21:13 +0000 Illustration for Impact: HART Curatorship Incubation Programme Visuals abduzeedo1108—24 Discover Anthony Lam’s captivating illustration work for the HART Curatorship Incubation Programme 2024, blending art with purpose. HART Collective Limited’s 2024 Curatorship Incubation Programme comes alive through a series of vibrant visuals and social media collaterals designed by Anthony Lam. This illustration project, aimed at amplifying the HART initiative’s reach, seamlessly combines creativity and purpose. Let’s dive into the thought process, design elements, and impact of these compelling illustrations. Bringing Artful Storytelling to HART The HART Curatorship Incubation Programme is more than just an event; it’s a platform that nurtures emerging curators and fosters artistic engagement in Hong Kong. For this initiative, HART Haus collaborated with Anthony Lam to create visuals that encapsulate the spirit of innovation and community central to the programme. With a focus on vibrant, eye-catching design, Lam’s illustrations breathe life into the promotional material, making the programme’s message resonate visually. One of the striking features of this project is the careful choice of typography. The primary typeface used is Degular Display by James Edmondson from OH no Type Co. This choice lends a contemporary and approachable vibe to the design, complementing the modern and energetic illustrations. The type’s bold and clean lines create a sense of structure amidst the dynamic visuals. Lam’s illustrations use a playful yet sophisticated color palette, striking a balance between the avant-garde and the accessible. The design approach draws heavily from art movements that emphasize form and rhythm, mirroring the essence of a programme that curates art as an experience. Each piece incorporates abstract shapes and flowing patterns that evoke a sense of motion, representing the evolving journey of curatorship and the fluid nature of artistic collaboration. Illustration isn’t just about static visuals; it’s about telling a story that connects with an audience. For this project, Lam crafted designs meant to adapt seamlessly across multiple platforms, from print to digital media. The social media assets, in particular, utilize animations and interactive elements to capture the attention of a fast-scrolling audience. These designs ensure that the HART Curatorship Incubation Programme stands out in the crowded digital space. The use of illustration as a core element of the visual identity allows for more flexibility and engagement. It provides a canvas where abstract concepts about art and curatorship can be expressed in a way that feels both authentic and exciting. Whether seen on a poster, a website, or a social post, each visual invites viewers to explore and learn more about the programme. Illustration plays a crucial role in making art initiatives accessible to a broader audience. By employing a visually striking yet relatable design language, Anthony Lam’s work for HART bridges the gap between curators and the community. The visuals don’t just inform; they inspire curiosity and engagement, which is essential for an incubation programme that seeks to elevate emerging curators. This collaboration also highlights the impact of thoughtful design in the arts sector. By leveraging illustration, HART Collective can convey complex ideas in a way that is immediately understandable and appealing. The choice of colors, the movement within the compositions, and the bold typography all work together to create a cohesive narrative that draws people in. The HART Curatorship Incubation Programme’s visual identity showcases how illustration can elevate an arts initiative, making it more engaging and impactful. Anthony Lam’s designs prove that illustration, when done thoughtfully, can serve as a bridge between art and the public, turning viewers into participants and supporters. This project is a reminder that effective visual identity goes beyond aesthetics; it tells a story that connects and captivates. As HART continues to grow its curatorship programme, the illustrations created for this year’s campaign will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, drawing more people into the world of art and collaboration. cuba Cuba's Power Grid Collapses Again After Second Hurricane. And Then an Earthquake Hit By hardware.slashdot.org Published On :: 2024-11-11T02:48:00+00:00 Wednesday Cuba was hit by a major hurricane which took down its entire power grid again, this time for about 24 hours, according to CNN: Videos of the aftermath showed power infrastructure turned into a mangled mess and power poles down on streets. Hundreds of technicians were mobilized Thursday to reestablish power connections, according to state media... Operations at two electrical plants were partially restored and parts of eastern and central Cuba had electricity back up by Thursday afternoon, state media reported... The country's power grid has collapsed multiple times, including when Hurricane Oscar hit in October and killed at least 7 people. In the capital of Havana, where 2 million people live, power had been restored to less than 20% of the city by late Friday afternoon, . "Authorities had not yet given an estimate for when power would be fully restored..." Then tonight, CNN reported: A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Cuba on Sunday, causing material damage in several regions as the island continues to recover from widespread blackouts and the impact of two hurricanes over the past few weeks. The earthquake was reported about 39 km (24 miles) south of Bartolomé Masó before noon local time, about an hour after a 5.9 magnitude quake rocked the area, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. "There have been landslides, damage to homes and power lines," Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said, adding that authorities are evaluating the situation to start recovery efforts. cuba The Geographer's Blog: Cuba on My Mind By natgeomaps.blogspot.com Published On :: Mon, 02 May 2011 14:27:00 +0000 New and Complete Map of Cuba, supplement to National Geographic magazine, October 1906; NG Maps. Since our first post, this blog has addressed the history of cartography at National Geographic, geographic names (toponyms), and even the cartographic exploits of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the American artist best known for the painting "Whistler's Mother." I hope that these topics have proven of interest to some if not all of you. But what we have not addressed is the personal more intimate side of cartography here at the Society. Unquestionably, National Geographic is the place to be if you love the science as well as the art of mapmaking. Our production schedules are full of stimulating and challenging projects that often test our knowledge of the cartographic profession. Once in a while, we will be assigned a project so close and near to our hearts that it becomes an overriding passion. Several months ago, I was given such an assignment—a large format (36" x 24") political map of Cuba. The last time the Society published such a map was in October 1906! Those of you in the exiled Cuban community, both in the U.S. and abroad, know the significance of this map. Anyone who has visited Miami's Little Havana, Tampa's Ybor City, or even Union City, New Jersey, can't avoid seeing maps of Cuba painted on walls, plastered on windows, or even printed on the sides of grocery bags.Read more: Full Article Cuba Juan Valdes map history map industry news National Geographic National Geographic maps reference and wall maps The Geographer
