Johann Johannsson - Fordlandia (4AD)

Based on the strength of my first listen to the album-titled opening track from Jóhann Jóhannsson's new Fordlandia, I was ready to launch it far up my often-morphing "best of 2008" list. When the woodwind curls of "Melodia (I)" followed, I was wooed even further. Following the more epic IBM 1401 - A User's Manual and Virðulegu Forsetar, Fordlandia is much more straightforward and concise, with what is essentially three separate suites of music that are largely broken down into more digestible pieces.

California voters reject 2 housing-affordability measures

By Megan Myscofski

Californians voted on two housing-related measures Tuesday — Propositions 5 and 33 — and rejected both, according to respective Associated Press race calls. Still, many voters cited affordability as a major issue in the state.

Proposition 33 would’ve rolled back state-wide restrictions on rent control. Proposition 5 would’ve made it easier for local governments to approve bonds for affordable housing, among other projects.

Mary-Beth Moylan is a law professor at the University of the Pacific. She said the rejection is a sign voters think lawmakers should solve the problem.

“Maybe the messaging is — we want there to be changes, we want there to be more affordable housing,” she said. “But we want the Legislature to figure out how to do it on its own and not involve the voters.”

But she added that could be bad news for local officials tasked with addressing affordability in their communities.

“The fact that these two measures didn't pass means that those people will not have, really, the tools that they need to get anything done,” she said.

Moylan said attack ads probably played a large part in the no votes, too.

“There were effective campaigns that had people not really understanding what both of them would do and what the consequences of them would be,” she said.

She also said that when voters don’t understand a measure, they tend to vote it down.

“Which I'm not saying is a bad thing,” she added. “Because we probably shouldn't be voting for things that we don't understand.”

Either way, Moylan said that voters didn’t see these as viable solutions to California’s housing affordability problem.

Halfords Mat Lacquer

I thought I'd give this a go as I had heard good things about it. I thought the scenic rock pools would be the perfect test subject, as if they dried glossy it wouldn't matter.
The results were good. I sprayed the models after I had added some flock, I thought the lacquer would help seal it.
After the scenic pieces I thought I'd try it on the new Irish figures. I consider this a tough, hard coat. Another layer of super mat varnish will be added with a brush when this first coat is dry.
The rock pools got a layer of flock really nail the realistic look.

The flock and paint work is all sprayed with the new lacquer, seems to be a winner.

Bedfordshire, the hay, and the sack

Inspired by Anatoly Liberman's Take My Word for It: A Dictionary of English Idioms (which I've reviewed for the International Journal of Lexicography), here's a quick dip into some ways of saying one's going to bed, where they've come from and who uses them now.

to Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire, a county north of London, has been a humorous synonym for bed since the 17th century.

Here's what the OED has (in an entry last edited in 1887):

Humorously put for bed.
    1665
Each one departs to Bedford-shire And pillows all securely snort on.
    C. CottonScarronnides 19
  1. 1738
    Faith, I'm for Bedfordshire.
    J. SwiftComplete Collection of Genteel Conversation 214

This seems not to have made any inroads to AmE.  Here are go to Bedfordshire and off to Bedfordshire in Google Books. Of course some of them might literally be about going to the county where Luton Airport is, but it's pretty likely that most are the idiom.

Hit the hay

From Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (via Bad Robot)
Liberman says "the phrase seems to be an Americanism". The OED defines hit the hay and roll in the hay but its earliest citation for hay in this sense is crawl into the Hay (1903); the first hit the hay they have is from 1912 (though, of course, it probably existed in speech much earlier).  They also have leaving the hay (P. G.Wodehouse, 1931—English, but a great user of Americanisms) and being great in the hay (Norman Mailer, 1959). This all gives the sense that the hay might have been a more agile synonym for bed than it is today, when most of us are not so used to thinking of hay as mattress material.

Though still more used in AmE, hit the hay is no longer foreign to BrE.

Hit the sack

Sack was a synonym for bed much earlier than hay (1829 first citation). The OED says of sack:

(a) A hammock; a bunk; (b) a bed; frequently as the sackto hit the sack: see hit v. II.11cslang (chiefly U.S.; originally Navy).

Hitting the sack doesn't show up in citations till 1943, though, so it was probably influenced the use of hit in other expressions like hitting the hay. Its US/UK usage pattern looks much like hit the hay's:

And others?

I was interested to learn that turn in is from the 17th century and, it seems, originally nautical slang. It comes from a time when sailors slept in hammocks rather than bunks—not sure if that's related. Going that far back, it's common to both Englishes. (Go to) beddy-bye(s) is also found in both Englishes in similar numbers. The first OED citation is from Australia in 1901.

Optimized incorporation of an unnatural fluorescent amino acid affords measurement of conformational dynamics governing high-fidelity DNA replication [DNA and Chromosomes]

DNA polymerase from bacteriophage T7 undergoes large, substrate-induced conformational changes that are thought to account for high replication fidelity, but prior studies were adversely affected by mutations required to construct a Cys-lite variant needed for site-specific fluorescence labeling. Here we have optimized the direct incorporation of a fluorescent un-natural amino acid, (7-hydroxy-4-coumarin-yl)-ethylglycine, using orthogonal amber suppression machinery in Escherichia coli. MS methods verify that the unnatural amino acid is only incorporated at one position with minimal background. We show that the single fluorophore provides a signal to detect nucleotide-induced conformational changes through equilibrium and stopped-flow kinetic measurements of correct nucleotide binding and incorporation. Pre-steady-state chemical quench methods show that the kinetics and fidelity of DNA replication catalyzed by the labeled enzyme are largely unaffected by the unnatural amino acid. These advances enable rigorous analysis to establish the kinetic and mechanistic basis for high-fidelity DNA replication.
