locks Why tug our forelocks to Richard III, a king who’s such a diva that he needs two funerals? Those are definitely my top two.Below them, there’s King Kong, King George III, Good King Wenceslas, and about 500 other assorted types of king before you get to Richard III. Never warmed to him. Don’t know why. I’ve just never really been into Richard III. Maybe it’s his Savile-esque haircut, or the fact that his name is widely used as rhyming slang for fecal matter, or just the way he’s routinely depicted as a murderous, scheming cross between Mr Punch and Quasimodo; a panto villain with nephews’ blood on his hands. locks 3D mapping unlocks a new world By www.news.gov.hk Published On :: Sun, 10 Nov 2019 00:00:00 +0800 Residents may have seen a distinctive white car, fitted with advanced imaging and sensory gadgetry, on its journey to create the next generation of Hong Kong maps. As it travels up and down the city’s streets, it records the three-dimensional shapes of buildings ranging from the iconic Convention & Exhibition Centre to the Customs Headquarters Building, and even primary school campuses. The vehicle, dubbed the Mobile Mapping System, is one of the latest technologies used by the Lands Department to survey the city. Five pieces of equipment work in concert to collect detailed information for the 3D City Map - a core component of the digital infrastructure underpinning Hong Kong’s smart city development. A high-resolution camera on top of the vehicle captures 360-degree images and a 3D laser scanner collects spatial measurements. An inertial navigation system and a global navigation satellite system receiver provide precise positioning. Lands Department Assistant Land Surveyor Charlie Hung said one of the biggest advantages of this system is its ability to quickly and efficiently acquire data, which can be used to enrich 3D models and enhance existing maps. “We can enhance the attributed information of our basic map. For example, the lamppost number, the building name or the street number.” Drones are also used to map the city, she added. However, air surveying may not be suitable for collecting data from ground level. This is where the Mobile Mapping System vehicle comes into play. Better dataThe 3D City Map is part of the 3D Digital Map Development, which aims to contribute to an innovative, sustainable and smart Hong Kong. Compared with traditional maps, the 3D City Map can provide more accurate and abundantly better spatial data. The map will cover the entire city by 2023, serving as a handy tool for analysis and planning, according to Lands Department Land Surveyor Ben Fan. He said: “Based on the 3D digital map, we can develop various kinds of applications such as land administration, environmental assessment, town planning and also transport and engineering studies.” The latest transport infrastructures such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Central-Wan Chai Bypass and the Heung Yuen Wai Highway have also been scanned. In the next stage of the 3D Digital Map Development, the department will create the 3D Indoor Map. As a start, data from 150 buildings in Kowloon East will be collected first before extending to other buildings in the city. The last stage 3D models of objects such as trees and lampposts for city modelling will be produced. Full Article

locks Novel peptide from commensal Staphylococcus simulans blocks MRSA quorum sensing and protects host skin from damage [Mechanisms of Action] By aac.asm.org Published On :: 2020-04-06T08:49:25-07:00 Recent studies highlight the abundance of commensal coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) on healthy skin. Evidence suggests that CoNS actively shape the skin immunological and microbial milieu to resist colonization or infection by opportunistic pathogens, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), in a variety of mechanisms collectively termed colonization resistance. One potential colonization resistance mechanism is the application of quorum sensing, also called the Accessory Gene Regulator (agr) system, which is ubiquitous among staphylococci. Common and rare CoNS make autoinducing peptides (AIPs) that function as MRSA agr inhibitors, protecting the host from invasive infection. In a screen of CoNS spent media we found that Staphylococcus simulans, a rare human skin colonizer and frequent livestock colonizer, released potent inhibitors of all classes of MRSA agr signaling. We identified three S. simulans agr classes, and have shown intraspecies cross-talk between non-cognate S. simulans agr types for the first time. The S. simulans AIP-I structure was confirmed, and the novel AIP-II and AIP-III structures were solved via mass spectrometry. Synthetic S. simulans AIPs inhibited MRSA agr signaling with nanomolar potency. S. simulans in competition with MRSA reduced dermonecrotic and epicutaneous skin injury in murine models. Addition of synthetic AIP-I also effectively reduced MRSA dermonecrosis and epicutaneous skin injury in murine models. These results demonstrate potent anti-MRSA quorum sensing inhibition by a rare human skin commensal, and suggest that cross-talk between CoNS and MRSA may be important in maintaining healthy skin homeostasis and preventing MRSA skin damage during colonization or acute infection. locks Quercetin blocks Ebola Virus infection by counteracting the VP24 Interferon inhibitory function [Antiviral Agents] By aac.asm.org Published On :: 2020-05-04T08:49:24-07:00 Ebola Virus (EBOV) is among the most devastating pathogens causing fatal hemorrhagic fever in humans. The 2013–2016 epidemics resulted in over 11000 deaths, while another outbreak is currently ongoing. Since there is no FDA-approved drug so far to fight EBOV infection, there is an urgent need to focus on drug discovery. Considering the tight correlation between the high EBOV virulence and its ability to suppress the type-I Interferon (IFN-I) system, identifying molecules targeting viral protein VP24, one of the main virulence determinants blocking IFN response, is a promising novel anti-EBOV therapy approach. Hence, in the effort of finding novel EBOV inhibitors, a screening of a small set of flavonoids was performed, showing that Quercetin and Wogonin can suppress the VP24 effect on IFN-I signaling inhibition. The mechanism of action of the most active compound, Quercetin, showing an IC50 value of 7.4 μM, was characterized to significantly restore the IFN-I signaling cascade, blocked by VP24, by directly interfering with the VP24 binding to karyopherin-α and thus restoring P-STAT1 nuclear transport and IFN genes transcription. Quercetin significantly blocked viral infection, specifically targeting EBOV VP24 anti-IFN-I function. Overall, Quercetin is the first identified inhibitor of the EBOV VP24 anti-IFN function, representing a molecule interacting with a viral binding site that is very promising for further drug development aiming to block EBOV infection at the early steps. locks Smart lock company LockState closes $5.8M Series A to fast track sales & partnerships By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: 2018-05-26T05:00:00-07:00 Smart Lock Company LockState raised $5.8M Series A in new investment to fund its aggressive sales and marketing and partner development plan. The company previously raised $740K seed round and $1M in a round led by angel investors. The lead investor in latest round was Iron Gate Capital. Other investors include Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc, Nelnet and Service Provider Capital. Access Control Dashboard and WiFi Smart Locks The company’s Wi-Fi-enabled RemoteLock is used by 1000s of Airbnb and other vacation rental hosts. It helps hosts remotely provide access to guests. Locking/unlocking codes can be generated via a host’s computer or smartphone. RemoteLock’s prices start at $299 which is its algorithmic ResortLock. The most pricey lock by LockState is its ‘RemoteLock 7i Black WiFi Commercial Smart Lock’ which costs $479. Another core product of LockState is its cloud-based remote access platform for internet-enabled locks. It implies users can remotely manage their (internet-enabled) locks via LockState’s cloud platform. Unlike smartphones and watches, customers don’t look forward to upgrading their smart locks or buying one when new models are launched. Thus, smart lock companies offset this disadvantage by partnering with property management and short-term rental companies to get new customers. LockState has partnered with vacation rental brands like Airbnb, HomeAway, and other listing partners to automate guest access. “We are expanding our footprint and moving into a new warehouse office that is more than twice the size of our current office. We’re also staffing up our sales and marketing teams. We’ve accomplished a lot without investing heavily in marketing so we’ll support that area to keep our momentum going. We intend to expand into new business-to-business and enterprise verticals where we’re seeing the market grow. We are also dedicating budget toward development.” Nolan Mondrow, CEO of LockState in a statement released to news site Venture Beat Igloohome a Singapore-based smart lock company also raised an investment of $4M in April this year. locks QPSS with non-50% dutycycle square wave clocks (For sample and hold) By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Sat, 29 Feb 2020 11:07:00 GMT Hello, Would anyone know how to setup a PSS or QPSS simulation with 25% dutycycle clock sources or if such a thing is possible with QPSS. Fig1 (below) is a snapshot of the circuit I am trying to characterize. This has 4 clock ports each with 25%duty cycle in the ON state. Fig2 below shows two of these clocks. Each path in the circuit consists of two switches with a low pass RC sandwiched in between. The Input is a 50Ohm port sine wave and the output is a 1K resistor. The output nets of all paths are connected together. I am trying to determine the swept frequency response from input to output (voltage) when the input is from 500Mhz to 510MHz. The Period (T=1/Fp) of each of the pulses is such that Fp=500MHz. The first pulse source has a delay=0, second has delay=T/4, third delay=2T/4, etc... I am currently getting it working and seeing the correct result (bandpass response) with Transient but the problem is doing a dft at 500MHz with 10KHz spacings needs at least 100us and takes up a lot of time and disk space. Many Thanks,Chris. Fig1 Fig2 Full Article
locks Accurate delay measurement between two clocks By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Fri, 24 Apr 2020 11:39:09 GMT Hi, I am currently struggling with measuring the delay between two clocks with a sufficient accuracy. The reference one is a fixed-phase clock, and the other one is a squared clock resulting of a circuit (kind of PLL) synthesis. As I need to run a large amount of Monte-Carlo simulations in transient noise, I need to improve the simulation speed, while keeping a satisfactory delay measurement accuracy (<0.1ps), more specifically at 0V-crossings of the differential clocks. So I cannot simply set a max timestep <0.1ps as it would be far too long to simulate. To sum up, I would need a very relaxed timestep on clock up and down levels, and a very short timestep only at rise/fall transitions. For this purpose, I wrote a Verilog-A script- using a timmer function to accurately emulate the reference clock 0V-crossing times (and get the related times with $abstime)- using @(cross to get the 0V-crossing times of the synthesized clock: but this is not accurate enough (I see simulation noise around 3ps in Conservative). Indeed, the "cross" event occures at the simulation time following the effective 0V-crossing time; this could be sometimes >3ps, far not enough accurate for my purpose. - I have tried to replace the cross with the "above" function, but it hasn't changed anything, whatever the time_tol value I put (<0.1ps for instance), the result is the same as with the "cross" function and the points are larger than >>0.1ps, weirdly. So I have decided to give up Verilog-A to measure the delay between my two clocks.I am currently trying to use the "delay" function of the Cadence Calculator as I guess it will "extrapolate" the time between two simulation points and therefore give a more accurate measurement of the 0V-crossing events, but when I try to compute the delay difference between the synthesized clock and the reference clock, it returns "0". ... Could you please give me hints to dramatically improve my 0V-crossing time measurements while relaxing the simulation time?- either by helping me in writing a more suitable Verilog-A script- or by helping me in using the "delay" function of the calculator- or maybe by providing me a "magic" Skill function?Using AMS+Multithread simulator... Thanks a lot in advance for your help and best regards. Full Article
