New Tiny Jackets: My Own Dark Age

Full disclosure–hell, this whole article is a full disclosure–Tiny Jackets is a project fronted by Kelly Simmons, who I played with in the band Daystar.

Some time ago I moved from Portland back to my hometown in Michigan and while we kept Daystar alive through those years (including through the pandemic lockdown), Kelly naturally got restless and started a new project called Tiny Jackets.

Now, here’s the thing: Tiny Jackets is exactly the band I would have loved to be in. They have big hooks, big harmonies, occasionally jangly guitars, and clever lyrics. That sounds like me, right?

Well, Tiny Jackets has a new single out called “My Own Dark Age” and it has all of the above plus a nifty outro that would sound natural on a banger from Waxwings (another band I wish I was in!).

Anchor-hosted shows account for more consumption of third-party podcast content on Spotify than any other podcast hosting or distribution provider
Spotify says Anchor’s top five markets in 2020, by total number of shows, were the US, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, and Great Britain. In Indonesia, Spotify signed nine shows to become exclusives. Meanwhile, the fastest-growing markets, looking at the average monthly increase in new shows, are India, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Indonesia. India accounts for nearly 40,000 Anchor-made shows and has been growing at an average of 22 percent month-over-month increase in 2020.

A Tiny LED Flashlight with Its Own Charging Case

Here's a strange pairing of objects, from Chinese manufacturer Olight. Their Baton 4 Premium Edition is a tiny LED flashlight—less than 2.5" long--that comes with its own charging case.

Despite its tiny size, the Baton 4 has a 1,300-lumen output, and the company claims it can throw its beam 170 meters (558'). Though the press image isn't so aspirational.

The charging case, which can double as a powerbank, has a built-in 5000mAh battery; the company says it can fully charge the Baton 4 up to five times, providing 190 days of runtime.

The fanatical EDC crowd loves flashlights, stashing stuff inside other stuff, and charging longevity. This object seems tailor-made to scratch all three of those itches.

These run $95.

Tiny Experiments: How Little Moments Influence Your Life

In a world that often emphasizes grand gestures and monumental achievements, it’s easy to overlook the profound impact of small actions. Yet, it’s these minuscule steps that are the true catalysts for change and progress in our lives. “Tiny Experiments.” I keep these words on a Post-It note on my monitor, a daily reminder that the key to unlocking my potential and propelling myself towards my desired future lies in the willingness to take small, manageable actions. Now, you might be skeptical. What can you really accomplish in just a few minutes? The answer is—a lot more than you think. What's with all the tiny soda cans? And other grocery store mysteries, solved.

There's a behind the scenes industry that helps big brands decide questions like: How big should a bag of chips be? What's the right size for a bottle of shampoo? And yes, also: When should a company do a little shrinkflation?

From Cookie Monster to President Biden, everybody is complaining about shrinkflation these days. But when we asked the packaging and pricing experts, they told us that shrinkflation is just one move in a much larger, much weirder 4-D chess game.

The name of that game is "price pack architecture." This is the idea that you shouldn't just sell your product in one or two sizes. You should sell your product in a whole range of different sizes, at a whole range of different price points. Over the past 15 years, price pack architecture has completely changed how products are marketed and sold in the United States.

Today, we are going on a shopping cart ride-along with one of those price pack architects. She's going to pull back the curtain and show us why some products are getting larger while others are getting smaller, and tell us about the adorable little soda can that started it all.

By the end of the episode, you'll never look at a grocery store the same way again.
