An increase in drownings, with toddlers at highest risk, prompts warning ahead of festive season

The Royal Life Saving Society says WA's latest drowning figures, which reveal a 50 per cent increase on the previous year, should serve as a warning ahead of the festive season. A new report shows 31 people drowned in the state in 2012. Children under the age of four were the highest risk group for drowning and near drowning. Older people over the age of 55 were also at risk.

'Terrible twos' not inevitable: With engaged parenting, happy babies can become happy toddlers

(University of Cambridge) Parents should not feel pressured to make their young children undertake structured learning or achieve specific tasks, particularly during lockdown. A new study of children under the age of two has found that parents who take a more flexible approach to their child's learning can - for children who were easy babies - minimise behavioural problems during toddlerhood.

Social-Emotional Screening for Infants and Toddlers in Primary Care

Recommendations in pediatrics call for general developmental screening of young children; however, research suggests social-emotional development, in particular, is important as an initial indicator of general well-being versus risk, and may warrant inclusion in screening protocols.

Via a social-emotional screening program, significant percentages of children can be identified as being at risk for social-emotional problems, and colocation of an early childhood psychologist promotes the ability to effectively address young children’s social-emotional development within their medical home. Part C Early Intervention for Infants and Toddlers: Percentage Eligible Versus Served

Part C early intervention serves ~2.8% of US children who are younger than 3 years old; however, there is evidence that substantial numbers of infants and toddlers with developmental delays receive no early intervention services.

Broad eligibility criteria can classify children who have no delays or minimal delays as candidates for Part C services. Despite this, no jurisdiction provides Part C services to all children who have substantial delays. (Read the full article)

Developmental Function in Toddlers With Sickle Cell Anemia

Children with sickle cell anemia are at risk of central nervous system damage, including stroke. Even children without evidence of abnormality on neuroimaging are at risk of significant declines in neurocognitive function, starting at early ages.

This study adds the observation that poorer neurocognitive and behavioral function is associated with older age in infants and toddlers with sickle cell anemia, much earlier than previously expected. (Read the full article)

Large-Scale Use of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Low-Risk Toddlers

Early detection for children with autism leads to better outcomes; early screening is critical. The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) is a widely used instrument for early autism screening and is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This large study provides empirical support for population screening for autism spectrum disorders and the use of the M-CHAT in primary care settings. This study provides updated results to facilitate use and scoring of the M-CHAT by clinical providers. (Read the full article)

Validation of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised With Follow-up (M-CHAT-R/F)

Screening for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) using the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) improves early detection and long-term prognosis of ASD. Reducing the false-positive rate may increase implementation of screening for ASDs.

The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with Follow-up (M-CHAT-R/F), simplifies wording of the original M-CHAT. The current validation study indicates that the M-CHAT-R/F improves the ability to detect autism spectrum disorders in toddlers screened during well-child care visits. (Read the full article)

Parent-Implemented Social Intervention for Toddlers With Autism: An RCT

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of intensive clinician-implemented interventions have demonstrated significant improvements in outcomes of toddlers and preschool children with autism spectrum disorder. RCTs of parent-implemented interventions have demonstrated improvements in parent skills, but generally they have not demonstrated effects on children’s outcomes.

This RCT found significantly greater improvements with individual home coaching on child outcome measures of social communication, adaptive behavior, and developmental level. These findings support the efficacy of a parent-implemented intervention using little professional time, which increases potential community viability. (Read the full article)

Early Intervention for Toddlers With Language Delays: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Early language delay is common in toddlers and is associated with poor academic outcomes, reading difficulties, and persistent communication problems. Despite these long-term sequelae, few interventions for toddlers with early language delays yield positive expressive and receptive language results.

A 28-session program delivered over 3 months can enhance parent language facilitation strategies. Unusually, the small short-term benefits were mainly in receptive, rather than expressive, language and vocabulary. Extended follow-up could determine the costs versus benefits of this promising approach. (Read the full article)
