October 10, 2014 This week on Basic Black: perceptions and realities on two fronts. First, we take a look at Ebola and race. With the death of Thomas Duncan attention has focused even more closely on his initial and subsequent contact with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas; although Mr. Duncan received round-the-clock care once admitted to the hospital, his case has raised questions about the relationship of communities of color, the poor, and the uninsured to the US health care system. Also, the ACLU of Massachusetts released a report charging the Boston Police Department with racial bias, a charge the Department vigorously rejects, pointing to advances made in the last few years under the leadership of Commissioner William Evans. But beyond the report, which only uses data from 2007-2010, how should we look at Boston's policing of communities of color in the context of the national conversation that sprung from events in Ferguson?

You don’t believe it looking out your windows in Southern California today, but spring it is. Perhaps I am forcing the spring by wearing bouquets on my stems – I think I can identify ranunculus, poppies, dianthus, and maybe roses?

I don’t know how authentically botanical fabric print designers think they ought to be, but I have an unshakable childhood recall of a bedroom in my great-grandmother’s house wallpapers in blue roses, and I was for years thereafter convinced that I could grow myself some blue roses.

And is there a happier color than this jacket’s coral/peach, or a springier fabric than the cotton-blend pique? It’s not as strenuous a shade as it would be in its brightness equivalent elsewhere on the color wheel, like electric blue or acid green. [And if it were, well, I’d wear it anyway!]

But the cloche hat – Daisy Buchanan, eat your platinum heart out. The ruched ombre silk ribbon on the crown and the minute bits of bent and curled ostrich feathers, like hatchlings on the hat! [I like saying that even more than I like writing it: "ruched ombre." It sounds like a fantastical concoction of molecular gastronomy: "the rambutan brûlée this evening is topped with ruched ombre."?     

Any bets on whether the May release of "The Great Gatsby" will revive 1920s chic? Who’s ready for dropped waistlines, lower heels and  long sautoir necklaces?

In the next few minutes I will show how to assign text & link colors for your webpage!

For starters, we need the <BODY></BODY> tags. This is where all your webpage info goes, content, images, etc. But, for now, we will focus on the <BODY> tag. Your text color & link color info will go within this first tag.

First let's focus on the text color. Here's an example of how the tag will look: <BODY TEXT="#000000"> Notice the TEXT attribute, that stands for the TEXTCOLOR We're using hexadecimal code here to get our TEXTCOLOR. In this case, our TEXTCOLOR is black (#000000) We can make it any color we want, though. However, it's a good idea to make your TEXTCOLOR contrast with the background color, so it's more readable.

Now, for those links. The first tag atribute is pretty much self-explanatory: <BODY LINK="#FF00FF">. There's also ALINK, which stands for Active LINK, and VLINK, which stands for Visited LINK.

Displaying Color in LO but Printing as White Page + Black Text:

1. Format > Page Style > Area > Color to assign the BG color you want.
2. Go to File > Printer Settings > Options.
3. Uncheck "Page background" and Check "Print in black".
4. Press "Save".

This will cause all files to print black text with no background color. You can also use "Save" + "Delete" button from Tools - opetions - Libreoffice - Application Colors.
