Spies, bikes and smuggled ink: Fighting pollution and the Stasi

...in the Shadow of the Berlin Wall. [BBC] "Named 'Operation Trap', the Stasi's attempted to crush a group fighting for a cleaner environment – and for the right to speak out. The secret police's tactics ranged from interrogations and jail to bizarre mind games. In one incident, informants who managed to infiltrate the environmental movement covertly took coffee from a shared pantry without putting money into the coffee kitty. That plan did not work out. On the contrary: Operation Trap became one of the very rare cases in history in which the Stasi was forced to back down."

Need Advice on Handling My Teen Daughter's Drinking Confession

I'm feeling out of my depth and could really use some support. My 16-year-old daughter recently admitted to drinking alcohol, and I'm grateful she trusted me enough to share this. But now, I'm facing an even more complicated situation. Last night she came home late with red eyes. I was asleep, and my wife became suspicious of smoking weed. The next day asked me to speak with her. I had a private conversation with her, where I asked about alcohol and other substances. She denied it. I promised her that she could tell me anything, and I'd keep it confidential unless her safety was at risk or if I felt I couldn't help and needed to find someone who could. I assured her that if it ever came to that, I'd tell her first before involving anyone else.

With that reassurance, she admitted to drinking. I'm grateful she opened up, but now I'm worried this may not be the first time, and I'm feeling deeply concerned.

Family History: My father's drinking led to emotional neglect and abuse when I was growing up. This makes me particularly hurt, sad, and fearful about my daughter's safety and the potential dangers of substance use.
•. Daughter's Challenges: She has attention issues and dyslexia, making school and focus a constant challenge. I worry that drinking or experimenting with substances could worsen these struggles.
Parental Dynamics: I haven't shared any of this with my wife yet. My wife has a very strict, zero-tolerance stance on substance use and has even threatened to abandon our daughter if she ever used drugs or alcohol. To be clear that's just intended to keep her in line. I don't believe it would ever come to that —but I feel stuck and unsure of how to handle this delicate situation.
•.Social Concerns: My daughter's friends are important to her, and I don't want to damage her social life or push her away. At the same time, I need to find a way to set boundaries and keep her safe.

My Questions:
• How do I support my daughter, maintain her trust, and guide her toward safer choices without isolating her socially or damaging our relationship?
• How do I handle this situation with my wife while protecting my daughter's trust and managing the volatility of our family dynamics?
• How can I manage my own fears, given my past experiences with emotional abuse and my daughter's learning challenges?

Any advice, support, or shared experiences would mean the world to me. Thank you for listening.

Red Ink Overflowing: In June, U.S. Borrowed A Typical Year's Worth

The federal deficit ballooned last month as the U.S. government tried to cushion the blow from the coronavirus pandemic. The red ink in June alone totaled $864 billion . The federal government ran a bigger deficit last month alone than it usually does all year. Washington spent hundreds of billions of dollars trying to prop up small businesses and assist laid-off workers. With three months left in the government's fiscal year, the year's deficit of $2.7 trillion is already nearly twice as large as the previous record of $1.4 trillion, set in 2009 during the Great Recession. While the government is spending heavily on the pandemic , tax collections in June were lower than usual. The filing deadline for 2019 income taxes was postponed until July 15. Congressional forecasters expect the federal deficit for the full year to reach $3.7 trillion. With infections on the rise, Congress is expected to consider additional relief measures this month. I Think Spring Has Sprung...

Hey Folks,

STORM CONTINUES FOR SOME

-Our Spring Storm continues to pound away on you folks on the in Eastern and Southeastern Labrador...
-Through today and into tonight another 10-15 cm of Snow could fall up through Mary's Harbour and up the Coast to Cartwright.
-Looks like 5-10 cm today for HV-GB and North of Gros Water Bay.
-Maybe more tomorrow for the North Coast depending on the track this thing takes.
-Winds will continue to gust to 70 or 80 km/h and so white out conditions will continue.

SNOW B-U-S-T

This was As Advertised from the very start "A Spring Storm"... but there's no doubt this system could have been much worse Snow wise across the Island. We did see some Snow up though Central and up the Northern Pen. However, some of the forecast models were showing as much as 20-25 cm in Central... and most of them were showing 40+ cm up the Northern Peninsula. And although I knew totals wouldn't be that high... I did think the cold air would hold on for more of a fight than it did.

But that's really been quite the common theme this winter hasn't it? Temperatures bumped up 1 or 2 degrees warmer than forecast and as a result we saw more Ice Pellets, Freezing Rain and Rain then anything else. Even up through the Northern Peninsula today... temperatures have bumped up ABOVE the freezing mark in many places. Some of you from Flowers Cove have been saying that not much Snow fell at all. Now the webcam in St. Anthony is showing some more Snowfall this afternoon... but Rain has been mixing in at times as well which is keeping totals down.

WEBCAM

I think it's Safe to say Spring has Officially and Unofficially arrived in Newfoundland. Old Man Winter has had another chance to get in there... and came up short again! (famous last words I'm sure... lol.)

Here are a few numbers from yesterday.

St. John's- 33.8 mm of Rain ( A New March 25th record)
St. Lawrence- 40 mm of Rain
Cape Race- 24 mm of Rain

Winds were very impressive from this Storm

Wreckhouse- 163 km/h
Port aux Basques- 119 km/h
Burgeo- 109 km/h
Argentia- 104 km/h
Twillingate- 96 km/h
Stephenville- 94 km/h

PEEK INTO THE LONG RANGE

-Most of us will see a taste of Sunshine tomorrow. An area of High pressure is going to sneak in from the South and clear things out overnight and into early tomorrow. However we'll see the Clouds building in late in the day from our next system building in from the Southwest.
-Thanks to the System rolling in... we'll see a solid Southwesterly flow.. that could bump temperatures to double digits in Newfoundland tomorrow!!!
-That system which is really more like a Cold front will cross the Labrador late Friday and Friday night and on Saturday across Newfoundland.
-On the Island it could drop a couple of wet cm's of Snow... especially in the East late Saturday.
-Things will be cooler in behind and will also start to clear again on Sunday.
-Early next week is looking pretty solid right now for most of the Province... although Western Labrador could see some Clouds and Flurries.

More details tonight on Here & Now.

John Geleynse on LinkedIn: Senior Director, Evangelism - Careers at Apple | 107 comments

from Daring Fireball John Geleynse, Apple’s longtime head of developer evangelism, on LinkedIn: Doing anything for 25 years is a pretty big deal. Being a part of Apple for 25 years has been the privilege and experience of a lifetime. My last day at Apple was exactly a week ago today. I’d always dreamed of being a part of Apple but never imagined it would be a reality. The most productive and exciting years of my career have been with Apple, and I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to meet and work with thousands of creative and passionate developers, designers, and students worldwide. [...] There are no words to describe how grateful I am for the opportunity to work side-by-side with so many great people at Apple. Apple is an immensely special place — far greater than the sum of its parts. Together, we did a lot. I heard about Geleynse’s retirement through the grapevine a month or two ago. I was hoping he’d post something like this publicly, so I could link to it. It’s a lovely departing message. Turns out, in all the years I’ve been writing here, I’ve only mentioned Geleynse by name twice, and both times I was quoting what someone else had written. And those two posts were from 2007 and 2008 — a while ago, to say the least. That’s a shame, dare I say negligent on my part. In third-party developer circles, everyone knows John Geleynse. Most prominently, his role as co-host (with Shaan Pruden) and I think effectively co-chief of the Apple Design Awards. But the ADAs are a once-per-year award show. Year-round, year after year, platform after platform, Geleynse has been shaping, guiding, and defining what it means to be a third-party developer for Apple platforms. The point of winning an ADA isn’t to win an ADA; it’s to reward making a great app that moves the state of the art forward. That’s what Geleynse spent his career trying to do. He’s just incredibly well-liked and well-respected. But, like a typical “bleed six colors” Apple employee, I think Geleynse going all these years operating mostly behind the scenes, with his own name out of the story, taking no personal credit, is just the way he wanted it. He’s going to be missed, dearly — both inside Apple, and out.  ★
