The demand for higher-performance computing is greater than ever. Cutting-edge applications in artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and databases require high-speed memory systems to handle the ever-increasing volumes and complexities of data. Advancements in cloud computing and machine virtualization are stretching the limits of current capabilities. AI applications hosted in the cloud rely on fast access and reduced latency in memory systems, which is amplified by an increasing number of CPU and GPU cores.

Introducing the DDR5 Multiplexed Rank DIMM (MRDIMM), the next-generation memory module technology designed to meet the needs of high-performance computing (HPC) and AI in cloud applications. By leveraging existing DDR5 DRAM memory devices, MRDIMM modules not only double the DRAM data rate but also maintain the RAS capabilities of the industry-proven RDIMM modules, setting a new precedent for memory module performance.

Let’s compare RDIMM and MRDIMM modules using the same DRAM parts. Today, high-speed production DDR5 RDIMM modules run at 5600Mbps. Those modules use DDR5 DRAM parts, which also run at 5600Mbps. An MRDIMM module using the same DDR5 5600Mbps DRAM parts will run at a blazing 11.2Gbps.

One key metric for best-in-class performance, low bit error rate (BER), and ease of adoption is the eye diagram. The eye diagram illustrates at-speed system margin and accurately represents DDR system quality when captured with a pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS)-like pattern. The diagram below illustrates Cadence’s 3nm silicon write eye diagram for DDR5 MRDIMM IP running at 12.8Gbps.

The eye diagram is captured using a PRBS-like pattern, incorporating a package and system board representative of a typical MRDIMM channel. Using PRBS-like patterns is crucial for capturing accurate eye diagrams. Repetitive clock-like data patterns create deceptively “open eyes” that do not reflect the real system performance. Effects like intersymbol interference, simultaneous switching, reflections, and crosstalk are not accurately reflected in the eye diagrams for parallel interfaces like DDR using non-random data streams. Relying on improperly captured eye diagrams inevitably leads to a significantly worse real system BER than conveyed by that eye diagram.

Doubling the DDR5 RDIMM data rate is challenging. Achieving high performance while optimizing for area and power requires multiple design techniques. Feed-forward equalization (FFE), decision feedback equalization (DFE), continuous-time linear equalization (CTLE), and T-coils are required to reach 12.8Gbps MRDIMM data rates in multi-channel systems. Building a production-worthy 12.8Gbps DDR5 MRDIMM IP requires engineering expertise that comes from many generations of memory interface design and production experience. ABSTRACTMore than half of births among Indigenous women in Guatemala are still being attended at home by providers with no formal training. We describe the incorporation of comadronas (traditional midwives) into casas maternas (birthing centers) in the rural highlands of western Guatemala. Although there was initial resistance to the casa, comadronas and clients have become increasingly enthusiastic about them. The casas provide the opportunity for comadronas to continue the cultural traditions of prayers, massages, and other practices that honor the vital spiritual dimension of childbirth close to home in a home-like environment with extended family support while at the same time providing a safer childbirth experience in which complications can be detected by trained personnel at the casa, managed locally, or promptly referred to a higher-level facility. Given the growing acceptance of this innovation in an environment in which geographical, financial, and cultural barriers to deliveries at higher-level facilities lead most women to deliver at home, casas maternas represent a feasible option for reducing the high level of maternal mortality in Guatemala.This article provides an update on the growing utilization of casas and provides new insights into the role of comadronas as birthing team members and enthusiastic promotors of casas maternas as a preferable alternative to home births. Through the end of 2023, these casas maternas had cared for 4,322 women giving birth. No maternal deaths occurred at a casa, but 4 died after referral.The Ministry of Health of Guatemala has recently adopted this approach and has begun to implement it in other rural areas where home births still predominate. This approach deserves consideration as a viable and feasible option for reducing maternal mortality throughout the world where home births are still common, while at the same time providing women with respectful and culturally appropriate care.

The synthesis and structural characterization of the mol­ecular compound (μ3-benzene-1,2-di­thiol­ato)hexa­carbonyl­bis­(μ3-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene-2,3-dithiolato)tricobaltmolybdenum, [Co3Mo(C4F6S2)2(C6H4S2)(CO)6] or Mo(tfd)2(bdt)(Co(CO)2)3 (tfd is 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene-2,3-dithiolate and bdt is benzene-1,2-di­thiol­ate), are reported. The structure of the mol­ecule contains the molybdenum tris­(di­thiol­ene) complex Mo(tfd)2(bdt) coordinated as a multidentate ligand to three cobalt dicarbonyl units. Each of the three cobalt centers is relatively close to molybdenum, with Co⋯Mo distances of 2.7224 (7), 2.8058 (7), and 2.6320 (6) Å. Additionally, each of the cobalt centers is bound via main-group donor atoms, but each one in a different way: the first cobalt atom is coordinated by two sulfur atoms from different di­thiol­enes (bdt and tfd). The second cobalt atom is coordinated by one sulfur from one tfd and two olefinic carbons from another tfd. The third cobalt is coordinated by one sulfur from bdt and two sulfurs from tfd. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first structurally characterized example of a molybdenum (tris­)di­thiol­ene complex that coordinates to cobalt. The F atoms of two of the –CF3 groups were refined as disordered over two sets of sites with ratios of refined occupancies of 0.703 (7):0.297 (7) and 0.72 (2):0.28 (2).

Now that the holiday season is winding down, thrift shops run by Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and other organizations are tallying up the annual flood of December donations. 

"It's always been a tradition that our donors donate between Christmas and New Year's ... and the last couple days of the year, they donate even more," Goodwill Southern California director of logistics Tinna Bauer explained. "Some do it for tax purposes, and some ... when they if they receive new items for Christmas, they clean out the old."

The film “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” was slated for a theatrical release in March, but due to COVID-19 screenings were postponed. Instead, the film is out on digital this week, currently sporting a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving critical acclaim both here on FilmWeek and nationwide as one of the best films of 2020 so far.

Writer-director Eliza Hittman’s third feature-length film is about two teenage girls Skylar (Talia Ryder) and Autumn (Sidney Flanagan) from rural Pennsylvania who travel to New York City for medical help after an unplanned pregnancy. Hittman says the idea for the film came to her when she read in a book about how some women in Ireland, which up until recently had very strict laws against abortions, would travel from Ireland to London in 24 hours just to get a procedure. It struck her as worthy of a screenplay, and the idea was born. As part of her research for the film Hittman went to a small coal-mining community in rural Pennsylvania and, even though she wasn’t pregnant, visited pregnancy centers, got tested, and talked with women getting treatment and counseling so she could, as she says, “write the scenes with credibility.”

Today on FilmWeek, we’ll air “The Frame” host John Horn’s interview with “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” director Eliza Hittman where the two discuss how Hittman came up with the idea for the film, her journey to rural America to find out what visiting pregnancy centers there is like, and how that informed the way she conceived and wrote the film.

(California Court of Appeal) - In a property tax refund action based on the welfare exemption set forth in Revenue and Taxation Code section 214, the trial court's judgment in favor of plaintiff is affirmed where: 1) the State Board of Equalization's (SBE) interpretation of section 214 was clearly erroneous; 2) the SBE's advisory rule regarding who must file a welfare exemption is not binding and therefore should not be given independent legal effect; and 3) the County failed to establish that the trial court should have denied a tax refund because plaintiff's claims were tardy and its claim forms were incomplete.

(Supreme Court of California) - Reversed. Plaintiffs brought a tort action against Defendants for a fatal tour bus accident that occurred in Arizona. The parties originally included plaintiffs from China and defendants from Indiana and California. The trial court determined that Indiana law governed the suit. Before trial a settlement was reached with the Indiana defendant. A Motion in Limine was brought to reconsider the choice of law because of the settlement. The Supreme Court held that a settlement did not require the trial to reconsider the choice of law.

(California Court of Appeal) - On rehearing, held that a professional model and actor was not entitled to recover his attorney fees after being awarded damages against an advertiser that used his likeness in an advertising campaign after its right to do so expired. Affirmed the trial court.

(United States Fourth Circuit) - In an attorney's fees action, the district court's dismissal of plaintiff's action is reversed where: 1) an award of attorneys' fees are permissible under F.R.C.P. 41(d) ; but 2) the Fair Labor Standards Act does not permit an award of attorneys' fees for defendants and plaintiff's conduct was not undertaken in bad faith, vexatiously, wantonly, or for oppressive reasons.

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that it will establish Quantum Information Science Centers to help lay the foundation for these technologies.
