Ethical leaders’ search for meaning: Ancient Confucian wisdom in Modern East Asia

Culture &Psychology, Ahead of Print. In secular Western societies, individuals often embark on an autonomous quest for meaning in life, which, however, can lead to frustration. In contrast, many East Asian ethical leaders draw on age-old teachings to find fulfillment—an underexplored topic that merits further investigation. By analyzing ancient Confucian tenets and the discourses of […]

Most ancient Athos monastery may be destroyed

REX Photo A deplorable statement has been made by hegumen of the Orthodox Docheiariou monastery on the Holy Mount Athos. The highest cathedral of the state may face destruction in case of an earthquake, which happen there quite often. The case is about Archistrategos Cathedral. As Archimandrite Gregorius (Zumis) revealed, the cathedral has fallen into the state of desolation after Greece left Athos to the mercy of fate. The authorities have not undertaken any measures to restore monuments so far. Centre for Maintenance of the Athos Heritage which was been established by the state, has been left without funding. According to the hegumen, monks of the monastery have been struggling for adoption of a plan on restoration of the Cathedral for as long as 28 years. But it has not been adopted still. And it is impossible to restore a huge Cathedral by themselves, for charity only.

The tin content of lead inclusions in ancient tin-bronze artifacts: a time-dependent process?

In antiquity, Pb was a common element added in the production of large bronze artifacts, especially large statues, to impart fluidity to the casting process. As Pb does not form a solid solution with pure Cu or with the Sn–Cu alloy phases, it is normally observed in the metal matrix as globular droplets embedded within or in interstitial positions among the crystals of Sn-bronze (normally the α phase) as the last crystallizing phase during the cooling process of the Cu–Sn–Pb ternary melt. The disequilibrium Sn content of the Pb droplets has recently been suggested as a viable parameter to detect modern materials [Shilstein, Berner, Feldman, Shalev & Rosenberg (2019). STAR Sci. Tech. Archaeol. Res. 5, 29–35]. The application assumes a time-dependent process, with a timescale of hundreds of years, estimated on the basis of the diffusion coefficient of Sn in Pb over a length of a few micrometres [Oberschmidt, Kim & Gupta (1982). J. Appl. Phys. 53, 5672–5677]. Therefore, Pb inclusions in recent Sn-bronze artifacts are actually a metastable solid solution of Pb–Sn containing ∼3% atomic Sn. In contrast, in ancient artifacts, unmixing processes and diffusion of Sn from the micro- and nano-inclusions of Pb to the matrix occur, resulting in the Pb inclusions containing a substantially lower or negligible amount of Sn. The Sn content in the Pb inclusions relies on accurate measurement of the lattice parameter of the phase in the Pb–Sn solid solution, since for low Sn values it closely follows Vegard's law. Here, several new measurements on modern and ancient samples are presented and discussed in order to verify the applicability of the method to the detection of modern artwork pretending to be ancient.

Ancient Erin

I saw these new ancient Irish scenary pieces from Alternative Armies last week. I thought they looked good so bought a few. These will be added to with more skulls and blades once the glue is dry.

It'll be nice to cover these in grass to give them an ancient look and feel.
This one will look great with some extra swords laying across the new rocks. Fantasy stuff really gets the creativity flowing and is so rewarding.
This is a pebble I found and thought it had an interesting shape. Taken back through the mists of time, it is now a huge fertility alter. I can't tell you what happens here, you have to use your imagination.
The great fertility stone looks very different in the moonlight. Some have said to see it move...and take on the shape of a giant woman.

A Fomorian checks out the smell of new resin on the table.

Update: I've added some greenstuff furs on some of the alters.

A few extra swords from the bits box help to finish off this weapon shrine.

Update: The next step is to dry brush them with three tones of grey. The last one is almost a white, to really bring out the details.

After the greys are dry I started playing around with watered down Contrast paint from GW. I leave the Contrast paint darker around the base of the rocks, this helps to weather them.

This is the fun part where you can add loads of subtle colours to the stones.
For this sort of scenery work I find a small make up brush is perfect. Just make sure you put it back when you're finished.
