gle Tangled trends for temperate rain forests at temperatures tick up. By www.fs.fed.us Published On :: Fri, 04 Jan 2013 14:00:00 PST Climate change is altering growing conditions in the temperate rain forest region that extends from northern California to the Gulf of Alaska. Longer, warmer growing seasons are generally increasing the overall potential for forest growth in the region. However, species differ in their ability to adapt to changing conditions. For example, researchers with Pacific Northwest Research Station examined forest trends for southeastern and southcentral Alaska and found that, in 13 years, western redcedar showed a 4.2-percent increase in live-tree biomass, while shore pine showed a 4.6-percent decrease. In general, the researchers found that the amount of live-tree biomass in extensive areas of unmanaged, higher elevation forest in southern Alaska increased by as much as 8 percent over the 13-year period, contributing to significant carbon storage. Hemlock dwarf mistletoe is another species expected to fare well under warmer conditions in Alaska. Model projections indicate that habitat for this parasitic species could increase 374 to 757 percent over the next 100 years. This could temper the prospects for western hemlock—a tree species otherwise expected to do well under future climate conditions projected for southern Alaska. In coastal forests of Washington and Oregon, water availability may be a limiting factor in future productivity, with gains at higher elevations but declines at lower elevations. Full Article

Though in fact, it happened in the year of 2009, and we are heading to 2020 now.Google has drastically evolved over the past ten years. Today, neural matching — an AI-based method — processes about 30% of all searches, and Google can recognize concepts behind keywords. They have introduced RankBrain, mobile-first indexing, and HTTPS. As we need to adapt to changes and find ways to get atop of SERPs, the topic of ranking factors remains as fresh as ever.So let's have a look at what ranking factors to consider in 2020, and what ranking myths to leave behind.I have mixed feelings about this infographics design:Good: It’s a concise summary of very complex information that’s laid out in the more detailed, full article. The infographic is a handy reference sheet and great for use in social media as promotion for the article.Clean arrangement that’s easy to read from top-to-bottomBad:Almost all text. Not that there’s much data that could have been visualized with charts, but some visual design elements would have made the infographic easier to read and more enticing to readers.Text URL to the article! gle Triangles in graphs without bipartite suspensions. (arXiv:2004.11930v2 [math.CO] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Given graphs $T$ and $H$, the generalized Tur'an number ex$(n,T,H)$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex graph with no copies of $H$. Alon and Shikhelman, using a result of ErdH os, determined the asymptotics of ex$(n,K_3,H)$ when the chromatic number of $H$ is greater than 3 and proved several results when $H$ is bipartite. We consider this problem when $H$ has chromatic number 3. Even this special case for the following relatively simple 3-chromatic graphs appears to be challenging. The suspension $widehat H$ of a graph $H$ is the graph obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex adjacent to all vertices of $H$. We give new upper and lower bounds on ex$(n,K_3,widehat{H})$ when $H$ is a path, even cycle, or complete bipartite graph. One of the main tools we use is the triangle removal lemma, but it is unclear if much stronger statements can be proved without using the removal lemma. Full Article
gle Monochromatic Equilateral Triangles in the Unit Distance Graph. (arXiv:1909.09856v2 [math.CO] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Let $chi_{Delta}(mathbb{R}^{n})$ denote the minimum number of colors needed to color $mathbb{R}^{n}$ so that there will not be a monochromatic equilateral triangle with side length $1$. Using the slice rank method, we reprove a result of Frankl and Rodl, and show that $chi_{Delta}left(mathbb{R}^{n} ight)$ grows exponentially with $n$. This technique substantially improves upon the best known quantitative lower bounds for $chi_{Delta}left(mathbb{R}^{n} ight)$, and we obtain [ chi_{Delta}left(mathbb{R}^{n} ight)>(1.01446+o(1))^{n}. ] Full Article
gle Hierarchical Neural Architecture Search for Single Image Super-Resolution. (arXiv:2003.04619v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Deep neural networks have exhibited promising performance in image super-resolution (SR). Most SR models follow a hierarchical architecture that contains both the cell-level design of computational blocks and the network-level design of the positions of upsampling blocks. However, designing SR models heavily relies on human expertise and is very labor-intensive. More critically, these SR models often contain a huge number of parameters and may not meet the requirements of computation resources in real-world applications. To address the above issues, we propose a Hierarchical Neural Architecture Search (HNAS) method to automatically design promising architectures with different requirements of computation cost. To this end, we design a hierarchical SR search space and propose a hierarchical controller for architecture search. Such a hierarchical controller is able to simultaneously find promising cell-level blocks and network-level positions of upsampling layers. Moreover, to design compact architectures with promising performance, we build a joint reward by considering both the performance and computation cost to guide the search process. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method over existing methods. Full Article
gle Single use register automata for data words. (arXiv:1907.10504v2 [cs.FL] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Our starting point are register automata for data words, in the style of Kaminski and Francez. We study the effects of the single-use restriction, which says that a register is emptied immediately after being used. We show that under the single-use restriction, the theory of automata for data words becomes much more robust. The main results are: (a) five different machine models are equivalent as language acceptors, including one-way and two-way single-use register automata; (b) one can recover some of the algebraic theory of languages over finite alphabets, including a version of the Krohn-Rhodes Theorem; (c) there is also a robust theory of transducers, with four equivalent models, including two-way single use transducers and a variant of streaming string transducers for data words. These results are in contrast with automata for data words without the single-use restriction, where essentially all models are pairwise non-equivalent. Full Article
gle Global Distribution of Google Scholar Citations: A Size-independent Institution-based Analysis. (arXiv:2005.03324v1 [cs.DL]) By arxiv.org Published On :: Most currently available schemes for performance based ranking of Universities or Research organizations, such as, Quacarelli Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education (THE), Shanghai University based All Research of World Universities (ARWU) use a variety of criteria that include productivity, citations, awards, reputation, etc., while Leiden and Scimago use only bibliometric indicators. The research performance evaluation in the aforesaid cases is based on bibliometric data from Web of Science or Scopus, which are commercially available priced databases. The coverage includes peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Google Scholar (GS) on the other hand, provides a free and open alternative to obtaining citations of papers available on the net, (though it is not clear exactly which journals are covered.) Citations are collected automatically from the net and also added to self created individual author profiles under Google Scholar Citations (GSC). This data was used by Webometrics Lab, Spain to create a ranked list of 4000+ institutions in 2016, based on citations from only the top 10 individual GSC profiles in each organization. (GSC excludes the top paper for reasons explained in the text; the simple selection procedure makes the ranked list size-independent as claimed by the Cybermetrics Lab). Using this data (Transparent Ranking TR, 2016), we find the regional and country wise distribution of GS-TR Citations. The size independent ranked list is subdivided into deciles of 400 institutions each and the number of institutions and citations of each country obtained for each decile. We test for correlation between institutional ranks between GS TR and the other ranking schemes for the top 20 institutions. Full Article

gle Software-based aliasing for accessing multiple shared resources on a single remote host By www.freepatentsonline.com Published On :: Tue, 22 Dec 2015 08:00:00 EST In order to allow a single user registered on a single local host or other machine to access multiple shared resources on a remote host, an aliasing mechanism is employed so that multiple concurrent connections can be established by the user to a single remote host, with each connection using a different identity. Each connection can therefore be used to access a different shared resource on the remote host. In some illustrative examples, a user's identifier such as his or her machine log-in identification may be associated with two or more resource sharing aliases. As a result, two or more resource sharing sessions can be established by the user with a single remote host, with each of the sessions using a different one of the aliases. The resource sharing sessions are usually established in accordance with a resource sharing protocol such as the Server Block Message (SBM) protocol. Full Article
gle Single instance buffer cache method and system By www.freepatentsonline.com Published On :: Tue, 26 May 2015 08:00:00 EDT Provided is a method and system for reducing duplicate buffers in buffer cache associated with a storage device. Reducing buffer duplication in a buffer cache includes accessing a file reference pointer associated with a file in a deduplicated filesystem when attempting to load a requested data block from the file into the buffer cache. To determine if the requested data block is already in the buffer cache, aspects of the invention compare a fingerprint that identifies the requested data block against one or more fingerprints identifying a corresponding one or more sharable data blocks in the buffer cache. A match between the fingerprint of the requested data block and the fingerprint from a sharable data block in the buffer cache indicates that the requested data block is already loaded in buffer cache. The sharable data block in buffer cache is used instead thereby reducing buffer duplication in the buffer cache. Full Article

gle Methods for promoting intrinsic activation in single chamber implantable cardiac pacing systems By www.freepatentsonline.com Published On :: Tue, 26 May 2015 08:00:00 EDT Cardiac pacing methods for an implantable single chamber pacing system, establish an offset rate for pacing at a predetermined decrement from either a baseline rate (i.e. dictated by a rate response sensor), or an intrinsic rate. Pacing maintains the offset rate until x of y successive events are paced events, at which time the offset rate is switched to the baseline rate for pacing over a predetermined period of time. Following the period, if an intrinsic event is not immediately detected, within the interval of the offset rate, the rate is switched back to baseline for pacing over an increased period of time. Some methods establish a preference rate, between the offset and baseline rates, wherein an additional criterion, for switching from the offset rate to the baseline rate, is established with respect to the preference rate.
