ETSI OSM is pleased to announce OSM Release TWELVE, the second Long Term Support release of ETSI Open Source MANO and one of its most prolific releases. One of the main new features of Release TWELVE is the ability to heal network functions that may be affected by any kind of infrastructure failure. This healing process, which may be triggered either manually or automatically depending on operator preference, can be applied in all the clouds supported by OSM, in line with OSM’s multi-cloud approach.

ETSI publishes a new white paper on Fixed 5^th generation advanced

Members from the ETSI Fixed 5^th generation (F5G) group have just published a new white paper “F5G advanced and beyond”. This white paper describes the drivers, dimensions, and technologies of the F5G advanced and beyond.

Nine key applications or industry trends are identified as key drivers for F5G Advanced. These can be grouped into two categories: those that are oriented towards services and applications, and those that are directed towards network transformation. Ultra-high-definition immersive experience services could put many new requirements on the network. Enterprises will continue their digitization and cloudification, and this is a huge opportunity for fixed networks.

The ETSI Open Source MANO community is proud to announce OSM Release SIXTEEN, a Long-Term-Support (LTS) release of ETSI OSM, which becomes the most innovative and feature-packed release shipped by OSM to date.

This release brings a revolution in OSM’s functionality, positioning OSM as a generalized cloud-native orchestrator for infrastructure, platforms and services, which extends significantly its former scope. Full cloud-native management of Kubernetes clusters in public clouds, together with the applications or software units running on them, is now possible with Release SIXTEEN. Every operation related to the cluster management (creation, upgrading, scaling, deletion) or the applications running on them is reflected in Git repositories, following the GitOps model. This has been possible thanks to a major change in the internal architecture of OSM.

The position provides management and operational support to IFPRI regional and country/project offices in Africa including related administrative aspects of current and new corporate partnerships in Africa. This position is based in Dakar, Senegal.  Essential Duties: Specific Duties include but are not limited to: Lead finance and administration functions of the Dakar office, providing operational support and oversight of day-to-day office activities.  Provide management support and oversight of the financial and administrative operations of IFPRI Regional and country/project offices in Africa, including functions such as budgeting, contracts and grants, human resources, facilities and IT management. Immigration has become a polarizing issue across democratic, authoritarian, and transitioning contexts. Anti-immigrant rhetoric has become part of the standard playbook for authoritarian populists. Immigration policies in ostensibly democratic countries are becoming more restrictive, all while political conflict, war, pandemics, and intensifying climate change are leading to greater numbers of people migrating in search of safety and a better life. With immigration discourse taking up much of the oxygen in politics across the world, understanding the interconnections among immigration, democracy, and authoritarianism has become more important than ever. This roundtable brings together distinguished scholars to discuss how controversies surrounding immigration and immigrants have become critical for sustaining or upending democracy.

Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors), young folx, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories, as well as those of survivance and resilience, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing, thinking, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works, including 15-17 new works. Together, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women, culture wars, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living, sustenance, and making.

"It's difficult to control everything," says our guest professor for this week, Santiago Gallino. "What is not difficult is to plan for everything." Today we venture into the sphere of business that masters the planning, and backup planning: operations management.

It's more than just predicting a bottleneck and imagining a solution, because there's always a bottleneck to clear. It's about modeling, and weighing the costs of messing up vs. missing out. For instance, take a newspaper vendor who has to decide how many newspapers to sell tomorrow morning. Do they buy fewer, knowing that they'll sell out–and then miss out on potential revenue from papers not sold? Or do they order more than they expect to sell, just in case–and eat the cost of a few unsold papers? This type of trade-off applies to all kinds of businesses, and Gallino talks us through how to choose.

The only certainty in this life is uncertainty. But we are certain you will come out of this episode feeling better prepared for your future business. And fortunately, there are no bottlenecks in podcasting.
