Beijing Olympics Marketing Guru Speaks at EWC's Sport Summit
Honolulu (October 1) – The upcoming inaugural East-West Sports Summit hosted by the East-West Center (EWC) and Sports Marketing Japan on November 7-9 will feature China’s leading sports marketing guru, Bin Yuan.  She is the director of marketing for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and previously served as deputy director of international relations for the Olympic Games.

Yuan’s keynote address will provide a timely update on China’s progress with the Olympic preparations and marketing efforts.  So far they have secured more than 50 commercial sponsors, in addition to the 12 worldwide partners of the International Olympic Committee.

Khmer Rouge Trial TV Reports Resume Online

HONOLULU (Dec. 13, 2011) -- ‘Facing Justice,’ a series of weekly Cambodian TV reports (with English subtitles) about the proceedings in the second Khmer Rouge trial, is now available online.

The series is a followup to a similar program on the first Khmer Rouge Tribunal trial, which garnered up to 3 million viewers each week, or 20 percent of Cambodia’s population, and was credited with being one of the main ways Cambodians received information about the trial.

Summer Institute on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Underway in Singapore

The 5th annual Summer Institute in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights will take place from 16 to 26 July 2012 in Singapore and focus on the topic of business and human rights.

The Summer Institute is a regionally based workshop held in partnership with organizations in Southeast Asia to consider key IHL and human rights issues, past and present, facing the region. Established in 2008 by the Asian International Justice Initiative, a collaborative project between the East-West Center and the War Crimes Studies Center, the Summer Institute is designed for participants working across a broad range of fields and disciplines within the Asia Pacific region or whose work has an Asia Pacific focus. Previous Summer Institute sessions have attracted lawyers, journalists, government officials, and NGO workers from more than 15 countries.

New Report Chronicles Status of Climate Change Law and Policy in Hawai‘i

HONOLULU, HI (August 24, 2012) — As part of a collaborative project of the Pacific Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments Program coordinated by the East-West Center, the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy (ICAP) at the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program recently published Climate Change Law and Policy in Hawai‘i, Briefing Sheet, 2012. The report chronicles Hawai'i state efforts to reduce human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and build resiliency to climate change impacts.

“The briefing sheet outlines the great work that has been accomplished thus far; however, there is much more to be done to effectively mitigate and adapt to climate change,” says Malia Nobrega, ICAP Director of Strategic Partnerships.

The Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment Releases Collaborative Report on Climate Change

HONOLULU (December 4, 2012)—The Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment (PIRCA) today released its first report, Climate Change and Pacific Islands: Indicators and Impacts (Island Press). The report highlights the findings of more than 100 scientists and other experts who assessed the state of knowledge about climate change and its impacts on the Hawaiian archipelago and the US-Affiliated Pacific Islands. The report also examines the adaptive capacity of island communities in the region.

HONOLULU (Aug. 18, 2015) – Thanks to more than $84,000 in funding from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the East-West Center’s 2015 Senior Journalists Seminar, which seeks to improve relations between the U.S. and Muslim regions, will include more Middle Eastern journalists and, for the first time, arts and culture reporters.

East-West Center Publishes Report on Inaugural Asia Pacific Dialogue of Women20 for the G20 Process

HONOLULU (January 19, 2018) – The East-West Center in Honolulu Hawai‘i has just published a report on the findings of the inaugural Women20 for the G20 Asia Pacific Dialogue, which was held at the Center in June. The 20-page report expands on initial policy recommendations that the participants released soon after the meeting to help the G20 address several of the most pressing areas of ongoing disparity in women’s economic status throughout the Asia Pacific region and the world.

Fish Family Foundation Awards EWC $50,000 to Support Women’s Entrepreneurship

HONOLULU (Feb. 7, 2020) – The East-West Center has been awarded a five-year grant totaling $50,000 from the Fish Family Foundation in support of the Center’s Changing Faces Women’s Leadership Seminar and #galswithLEI Forum, which collectively seek to enhance women’s leadership skills and entrepreneurial capacity; experientially explore innovative entrepreneurship; build a sense of self-efficacy; and expand national and regional networks.

As a result of the Fish Family Foundation’s funding, the Changing Faces Seminar will now be able to include female business or social entrepreneurs from Japan each year until 2024. The funding will also substantially increase the Center’s ability to include mainland and international speakers in the associated #galswithLEI Forum.
