ICRA@40: 23–26 September 2024, ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
IROS 2024: 14–18 October 2024, ABU DHABI, UAE
ICSR 2024: 23–26 October 2024, ODENSE, DENMARK
Cybathlon 2024: 25–27 October 2024, ZURICH

Enjoy today’s videos!

I think it’s time for us all to admit that some of the most interesting bipedal and humanoid research is being done by Disney.

[ Research Paper from ETH Zurich and Disney Research]

Over the past few months, Unitree G1 robot has been upgraded into a mass production version, with stronger performance, ultimate appearance, and being more in line with mass production requirements.

[ Unitree ]

This robot is from Kinisi Robotics, which was founded by Brennand Pierce, who also founded Bear Robotics. You can’t really tell from this video, but check out the website because the reach this robot has is bonkers.

Kinisi Robotics is on a mission to democratize access to advanced robotics with our latest innovation—a low-cost, dual-arm robot designed for warehouses, factories, and supermarkets. What sets our robot apart is its integration of LLM technology, enabling it to learn from demonstrations and perform complex tasks with minimal setup. Leveraging Brennand’s extensive experience in scaling robotic solutions, we’re able to produce this robot for under $20k, making it a game-changer in the industry.

[ Kinisi Robotics ]

Thanks Bren!

Finally, something that Atlas does that I am also physically capable of doing. In theory.

Okay, never mind. I don’t have those hips.

[ Boston Dynamics ]

Researchers in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University have created the first legged robot of its size to run, turn, push loads, and climb miniature stairs.

They say it can “run,” but I’m skeptical that there’s a flight phase unless someone sneezes nearby.

[ Carnegie Mellon University ]

The lights are cool and all, but it’s the pulsing soft skin that’s squigging me out.

[ Paper, Robotics Reports Vol.2 ]

Roofing is a difficult and dangerous enough job that it would be great if robots could take it over. It’ll be a challenge though.

[ Renovate Robotics ] via [ TechCrunch ]

Kento Kawaharazuka from JSK Robotics Laboratory at the University of Tokyo wrote in to share this paper, just accepted at RA-L, which (among other things) shows a robot using its flexible hands to identify objects through random finger motion.

[ Paper accepted by IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters ]

Thanks Kento!

It’s one thing to make robots that are reliable, and it’s another to make robots that are reliable and repairable by the end user. I don’t think iRobot gets enough credit for this.

[ iRobot ]

I like competitions where they say, “just relax and forget about the competition and show us what you can do.”

[ MBZIRC Maritime Grand Challenge ]

I kid you not, this used to be my job.

Disney keeps remaking its animated movies into live-action films. Former animators tell us how hard it is to see their work re-envisioned 20 years later.

Disney keeps remaking its animated classics because they're a proven box-office success.Insider spoke with three former Disney animators who worked on "Beauty and the Beast," "Hercules," "The Lion King," and "Mulan" who shared their thoughts on the adaptations. They were surprised so many of the films they worked on are getting remade, especially the more recent ones from the '90s.None of them were fans of "The Lion King," criticizing the film's lack of emoting and how closely it adhered to the original."I think it's all about the money and growing the company and making the investors and stockholders happy," "Mulan" co-director Tony Bancroft told Insider. Insider also spoke with producers and VFX artists on "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" who pushed back on claims the remakes are simply cash-grabs.If

Patt's Hats: Disney sells Tonto's headdress from 'The Lone Ranger'

Patt Morrison models a headdress from the movie "The Lone Ranger."; Credit: Michelle Lanz/KPCC

Patt Morrison

Trust me – you’re going to be seeing a lot of these between now and Halloween.

I went to “The Lone Ranger” premiere last month, and outside the theater, Disneyland began selling a version of the Tonto headdress dreamed up by Johnny Depp and his folks for his role in the film, which I found to be a rollicking, ironic version of the classic action adventure with some very sober scenes evoking Native Americans’ tragic history.

The inspiration, Depp says, was artist Kirby Sattler’s interpretive 2006 painting “I Am Crow.”

Depp himself has claimed Native American ancestry, and the bird atop his bean plays a substantial if silent role in the proceedings. It is an interpretive painting, as I said, not a literal rendering of any tribal makeup. In the Sattler painting, the bird is flying above the figure’s head, not perched on it.

But the movie’s invested in storytelling, not the fine points of accuracy. If it had been, it wouldn’t have made the historical solecisms of relocating both Monument Valley and the transcontinental railroad to … Texas.

Disney (DIS): Is It Time to Buy?

It’s no secret, a large number of high-profile companies have taken a serious beating since the pandemic’s onset. Possibly none more well-known than Disney (DIS). COVID-19 has necessitated theme park closures, a halt of live film production, and a delayed movie release schedule – all resulting in last week’s crushing F2Q20 report.Yet, Northland analyst Bernie McTernan argues that there are several reasons to remain positive on the House of Mouse.Glimmers of hope were provided during the earnings call, as Disney announced it will reopen its Shanghai theme park next week on May 11. McTernan assumes that domestically, Disney’s parks will open in September. Nevertheless, the forced enclosures are set to impact the balance sheet for a while, and McTernan forecasts it will take “at least two years for Disney to generate the revenue/segment operating income they could have in FY'20.”Disney has also taken emergency measures to preserve cash flow through the pandemic. The company has suspended the dividend, reduced capex and furloughed employees. Although drastic, in an environment which is likely resulting in negative FCF, McTernan believes the measures should “provide a margin of safety.”“Importantly,” McTernan added, “We believe these levers can be switched back on when the operating environment begins to normalize.”But there is another recent positive development for investors to consider. When Disney announced in April that the launch of its new streaming service Disney+ had exceeded expectations and already boasted 50 million global subscribers, the numbers took the Street by surprise. McTernan believes there’s more to come.“We estimate Disney+ will reach 65M global subscribers by the end of September '20E and attain profitability in FY'23E, a year earlier than originally guided… As cord cutting grows, Disney+ is the reason to own the stock,” McTernan opined. To this end, McTernan keeps a Buy rating on Disney, along with a $130 price target, which implies nearly 20% upside from current levels. (To watch McTernan’s track record, click here)And what abut the rest of the Street? Based on 11 Buy ratings, 10 Holds and 1 Sell, Disney has a Moderate Buy consensus rating. With an average price target of $120.35, the analysts expect upside of nearly 12% over the coming months.
