It gave people the opportunity to create signs not just for themselves, but for anyone who shows up to the assembly empty-handed. Mary McNamara Bernsten is an event organizer for the march. She was cutting cardboard with a utility knife so she and others could paint and transform the rectangles into protest sign art. She said last year they had several signs ready to go. "When people got to the march, you could kind of see them looking around and thinking, 'I wish I had something to hold.'" McNamara Bernsten continued, "If you've never done it before, it's not as easy as you think it is to go out and express yourself." She said people responded favorably to the pre-made signs. "A lot of people were happy. They were, 'Oh great! Give me a sign!' They picked one that they related to personally and took off with it." Though there will be a supply of extra signs handy, marchers are encouraged to create their own Full Article

part WATCH: Trump Announces Push For Citizenship Data Apart From Census By www.krcc.org Published On :: Thu, 11 Jul 2019 21:09:53 +0000 Updated at 6:40 p.m. ET President Trump announced an executive order on gathering citizenship information, a shift from an earlier effort to get a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. Trump spoke alongside Attorney General William Barr, who praised his decision. Their remarks come after the Supreme Court blocked, for now, the addition of the question " Is this person a citizen of the United States? " on the annual headcount. Critics feared the question would lead to undercounts of immigrant groups and communities of color. Despite the justices' rejection, Trump had vowed to continue pushing for the change — even as printing of the paper forms has begun. The administration's persistence includes an attempt to change the Justice Department's legal team on the issue. But Trump's remarks Thursday indicate the administration is dropping the question fight in favor for a different avenue for getting a count of noncitizens in the U.S. Still, it's not clear what impact the executive Full Article

part The Hyperpartisan State By www.wnyc.org Published On :: Mon, 23 Dec 2019 12:00:00 -0500 North Carolina is a relatively purple state, where voting between the two major parties tends to be close. That might suggest a place of common ground and compromise, but it’s quite the opposite. “A couple of years before the rest of the country got nasty, we started to get nasty,” a North Carolina political scientist tells Charles Bethea. Not long ago, a veto-override vote devolved into a screaming match on the floor, to which the police were called. Bethea, a longtime political reporter based in Atlanta, went to Raleigh to examine how hyper-partisanship plays out on a state capitol, where everyone knows each other, and the political calculations seem to revolve more on who did what to whom, and when, than on who wants to do what now. part Is Joe Biden the Future of the Democratic Party? By www.wnyc.org Published On :: Thu, 05 Mar 2020 12:00:00 -0500 Joe Biden’s pitch to voters has been remarkably consistent: he says he can unite older voters, people of color, and moderates into a coalition that can defeat Donald Trump. A series of gaffes, concerns about his voting record, and disappointing results in the early primaries seemed to doom Biden’s candidacy. But big victories in South Carolina and on Super Tuesday have given new credence to his claim that he’s the best person to take on Trump in November. Evan Osnos joins Dorothy Wickenden to discuss how Biden became the Democratic front-runner and how he’ll go about winning over skeptical young, progressive voters. part Some Push To Change State Laws That Require HIV Disclosure To Sexual Partners By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Wed, 22 Jan 2020 10:00:00 +0000 In more than 30 states, it is illegal for someone with HIV to have sex without first disclosing their status. Some are now pushing to change that, arguing that the laws are actually endangering public health. More than 1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and their HIV status could conceivably put them behind bars. That's what happened to Michael Holder. "I served 8 1/2 years in prison and three years after on parole," Holder says. Back in 2000, Holder's ex-girlfriend testified that he didn't disclose his HIV status before they had sex. That's a crime in Michigan and in most states in the country. He says the day after she said that, she came in and recanted. "She testified the truth and said that she had lied and said that she was jealous, and she loved me and that I had told her just like I had testified and said I'd told her," Holder says. "And she told the truth, but it was too late." Holder couldn't prove that he told her. Public health experts say that's one of many Full Article

A candidate should be: - familiar with and interested in moderation or community management practices - skilled at communicating clearly and promptly in written English to people with a variety of communication styles - able to coordinate with your fellow moderators, and to do independent decision-making during scheduled shifts - confident of your ability to respond diplomatically and empathetically in stressful or complicated social situations - committed to the privacy of user information Previous experience moderating online communities is preferred but not required; past participation in and familiarity with discussion-based communities and some of the challenges they can present is a must. MetaFilter's moderators work with and support a diverse community of users around the world. Our community management ethos means trying to be generous with people as individuals, while at the same time not tolerating intolerance. We’re committed to more actively making space for marginalized perspectives—see our recently-updated Community Guidelines document—and you should be aligned with and comfortable working to support these goals. To better serve our diverse community, we are specifically seeking to expand the diversity of life experiences and cultural backgrounds represented in our moderation team. Currently our moderation team has particular need for perspectives from non-Americans and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color) Americans. Candidates are invited to briefly address how their personal or professional background could contribute to the breadth and strength of the moderation team ability to support the MetaFilter community. We especially encourage people of color, women, sexual and gender minorities, people with disabilities, and members of other marginalized or underrepresented groups to apply. part Michael Flynn Pleaded Guilty. Why Is The Justice Department Dropping The Charges? By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Fri, 08 May 2020 13:57:00 +0000 Why is the government seeking to drop charges against Michael Flynn even though he pleaded guilty — in two admissions in court — to committing the crime at issue? The short answers: The Justice Department is giving him a break. And Flynn has played his cards well. The long answer: It's a long story.
