What do pre-teens do on the weekends?

I'm trying to get a sense of what the 10-13 year-old age group does on weekends. It's a time that is post- playdate and organized group music classes, but pre-getting a job, making own plans etc. So curious how kids across all nations (not just US) spend this time in their lives.

Odd of an ER bill in France coming across the Atlantic?

I had a minor stumble in Paris last month and ended up visiting an urgent care. They took me in and patched me up and sent me on my way. What are the odds a bill will eventually find its way across the Atlantic to me in the US?

I was on a scooter tour of the Champs Elysees when I took a tumble and my glasses took a chunk out of my eyebrow. I was the only person on the tour, so the tour operator called to figure out which hospital to take me to and we scooted over. My wife was back in the hotel room setting up a case with our Cigna International SOS health coverage, who reached out to me while I was filling out the paperwork at the intake / waiting room. "Oh no, that is not one of our hospitals, we'll have to do it as a post-service reimbursement, is that OK?" and yeah that was fine. Maybe 10 minutes later they brought me back to triage to make sure I wasn't in acute danger before sending me back to the waiting room. Maybe another 10 minutes later they brought me back to a private room, the doctor looked at me and said "ah yeah, that will need to be closed up, let me bring in another coworker to confirm", and maybe 10 minutes later my eyebrow was glued up and the doctor was escorting me to a discharge waiting room. 2 weeks later the wound is a tiny little scar hiding behind my eyebrow, so well done, doc, and bravo French healthcare for making an urgent care case take maybe an hour, tops?

But while I was checking if I needed to visit anyone to arrange for payment before I left, they seemed to be being mostly polite about the whole concept of paying for health care and just gave me some discharge paperwork which only has the usual privacy policy fine print on it as well as a brief summation of my treatment. They do have my home address from intake, so it's _possible_, but is it actually likely?

I mean I guess the alternative question is how long do I need to stall Cigna's International SOS before the whole thing turns into an amusing story about how I spent a few hours on vacation in the French ER and getting my glasses replaced before I could finish a coffee at the corner cafe.

At-home molecular testing

I seem to remember someone here recommending a tabletop at-home device for Covid testing (maybe NAAT?) that's approved in the European market but not in the US. Can someone here remind me?

Context: We've got an ambiguous rapid antigen test result for COVID in our house. The line is so faint that it is not pink or red, although two out of three of us see something there, like a shadow. We'd hoped to confirm with PCR so we can plan (eg what are the chances we'll need to cancel our Thanksgiving trip to see my elderly mother in her nursing home?) but we learned that molecular testing isn't offered in our region anymore.

I know that I might not be able to buy anything that is immediately useful for this situation, but since Covid isn't going anywhere, maybe this is worth an investment. We do plan to follow up with more RATs over the next few days.

We do know that CDC guidelines don't require us to care. I'm not worried for my kid at all, she's only mildly ill. I just want to do the right things to limit spread, here and in future.

One device to rule them all: BPM and sleep tracking

For reasons, it's important for me to track my beats-per-minute and sleep. To date, I've done that by using an Oura Ring to monitor sleep and a Fitbit for BPM. The Oura ring just bit the dust and rather than replace it, I'd rather buy one device- ring or watch- that does both well. Any suggestions?

Things I value or need include:

- Fast and accurate BPM tracking. Doesn't need to be perfect. The fitbit's level of accuracy and speed was fine. But with the Oura ring I needed to stay still and wait several minutes to get a value and those values felt hinky.

- Sleep data that is fairly accurate around night wakings, fall-asleep time, deep sleep/REM/Light sleep, and resting heart rate overnight. The Oura Ring is amazing at this.

-I don't care if I have to use an app for the sleep info but the BPM needs to be visually available.

-I don't care about steps or other fitness indicators but they aren't a problem.

- I'm happy with a ring, watch, or something else as long as it can do both. Does such a thing exist?

Craft project decision-point: stop, continue, or start over?

I made a fused glass house number to post on a rock at the top of our driveway. I'm not super-satisfied with how it came out (so far?). I'd like opinions and advice on the three options I have from here.

Here's how it looks now. It's very roughly 10"x10".

If you're aesthetically picky, I'd love your honest opinion. Am I having house number dysphoria? Or am I right that the blobbiness makes it look too amateurish? The studio owner says it's already beautiful, and no one will notice the lumps when they're at viewing distance from the rock. Is she right and my perfectionism is just getting in my way? Or is it really as amateurish as it looks to me?

The top part of the 6 is nice and smooth, just how I wanted it. The rest isn't, and it's not going to get there at the studio where I made it. The studio owner has already fired it twice, with some work in between to smooth the edges. My amateur opinion is that it needs to be fired hotter for longer, but her professional practice is that she's not going to do that. So I have three options:
1. Pick it up and install it as-is.
2. Grind out some of the worst lumps on the edges, and have her fire it again to polish the ground edges. She will NOT be happy to do this, so I'd have to insist. She won't like it, and I won't like doing it (but also, I'm not planning to go back after this). I don't know if it'd end up enough better to be worth it. The surface will still be lumpy -- it's only some of the edges I could grind down a bit. I outlined those in pink on the second image, but I'm not sure if I even could fix all of them. The grinder might not fit inside the circle of the 6, or in the narrow space between the 2 and the 6.
3. Start over at another studio. I found one where I'm confident I could get the result I'd like. She spent time with me on the phone, shared lots of expertise, and suggested a different process (cutting a mold from 6mm fiber paper).

I'm not feeling psyched to start from scratch, but I'm also not sure whether this looks good enough to use as-is, or even with the grinding I could do. I do like the colors, and I'm not sure what color range the other studio will have in the scrap bins I'd be using. The other studio is a long drive away, and I'd have to make 2-3 trips. I'd have to spend more money to start over, and I've already spent what's verging on a silly amount for house numbers.

So I don't know: use it as-is, grind what I can, or bite the bullet and start over?

It's tricky, because I'm a newbie and the studio owner where I went is an experienced pro, but I think she's wrong about some of what she's telling me. Those details are collapsed

[here, but skippable.]She says the lumpiness is because I used different thicknesses of glass. I did, but I think it should still melt smooth if held hot enough for long enough. The plan we'd discussed ahead of time was to just let it melt and puddle out unevenly, and then cut out the right shape with her ring saw, but now she doesn't want to do that. She says it already has spots that are devitrifying. It does, but my understanding is that we can address that with clear frit powder on top. She says it risks being more brittle each time we fire it, but I heard that bullseye glass was tested to five firings at 1500 degrees each -- which I think she's probably not even hitting.

Can I Only Update My Address With Equifax By Mail?

I have just moved and wish to update my address with Equifax. The other credit agencies allowed me to do this online, but Equifax say I have to mail them a photocopy of my driver's license and SS card. I have never updated my address with them in the past, but they already have all my previous addresses, so do I need to mail them my details too - or will they just get updated automagically?

A quick Google says you can change your address in the myEquifax Dispute Center, but if I do that and choose to dispute my current address (my previous one), I'm given the following options for "Why are you disputing your current address" - "I have never lived at this address", "This address belongs to another person with a similar name", "I believe I am a victim of fraud or identity theft and this address is not mine" - none of which fit my pretty common "I have moved".
It seems that I'm missing something here - that the only way to update my address with a major credit agency is by mail? - and if I do so, I'm also not quite sure if I'll receive confirmation when/ if it is done. Am/ will I?

Ideatin' a staycation for max recuperation

I'm rounding out a very very challenging fractional role ending on November 22, which was hot on the heels of a preceding brain-breaking job. With limited funds and an abiding sense of guilt about "relaxing," what can I do to make this staycation as restorative as possible?

I don't have a job lined up after this, but the two weeks starting September 25 are actually vacation rounding out the old job, and I'd like to, well, vacation. Past staycations tend to devolve into me playing video games I don't care strongly about, watching a bunch of garbage on streaming, and then feeling like it was a long weird weekend and not feeling restored at all.

I'm hoping to do something in a two-week sprint that may still involve some work -- if I'm angling toward freelance I need to start getting an oar in -- but leans heavily into restoring a stressed and anxious brain and getting me feeling a little more me again.

Pot pie recipe with broth only?

A couple of years ago I used to make this pot pie recipe which was not vegan or vegetarian but which didn't have any dairy in the sauce, just broth. I cannot find it. Do you know of such a recipe?

I dimly recall that it was just broth with some cooked flour in it to thicken, but I don't remember any of the proportions. I remember being surprised that it had no dairy. It definitely didn't have almond milk, oat milk, etc.

Otherwise it was pretty standard - chicken, vegetables, potatoes, some herbs.

Do any Twitter/X alternatives let you upload your archived data yet?

I really gotta get off Twitter/X, but I'd like to have all my data on one service. Have any of the alternate federated services implemented an importer for archived data yet? If not, are there any good third-party ways to do this now?

I looked into this a couple years ago, before I set up my mefi.social Mastodon account. But I only found some GitHub repos with scripts to do things like this, and it looked like doing it on Mastodon, for instance, if you'd already created an account would run the risk of flooding the server you're on with your old posts.

But people have been leaving Twitter/X for a couple years now, and the services have had some time to catch up after the flood of initial interest. Is there a way to import this data? Especially is there a way to do this on Mastodon that won't spam mefi.social? Heh.

A Self-hosted, video streaming player that lives in a web page?

For "reasons" (including SUPER-sucky customer service), I want to ditch my paid streaming media player service. Lets call it...JillyWillyPlayer. My sites have been using it for over a decade. I don't need hosting and I'd like to find a more...2024 solution.

I already host all my video files and they exist only on my server. I have my own bandwidth et-al. All I'm really paying JillyWillyPlayer for is the streaming media player that is inside my customers' desired browser.

I don't need a library system (have my own), or a 3rd party server (again, I host all my own and my own bandwidth), I don't need anything that will serve an ad, all I need really is the web-based streaming player.

Click the link ->new window opens with the player in it with the indicated video ready to stream (i.e. not download).

I was looking at Jellyfin and OpenStreamingPlatform but im not sure I need/want ALL that these can do, or if they just do the one little thing i'm looking for.

Free isn't necessary. I'm willing to pay a license or a one-time purchase thing.

Any thoughts, advice or recommendations, gang?

Easiest way to destroy platters from old hard drives?

For years, whenever I replaced an external HD, I took it apart & lied to myself, saying I'd get around to destroying them later. I don't drive, so I'm not going to drive somewhere to recycle them, and I don't have access to the kind of tools to drill through them. There's nothing terribly secretive on them, but still, in this age of identity theft, I don't want someone to be able to recover old data, y'know? What's the easiest way to destroy them?

Was it mice or moths? Or something else?

I can't believe I'm asking this disgusting question. I store my sweaters folded on the shelves of an open bookcase near my bed. I just discovered that several of them developed holes since I last wore them. I know for a fact that there was a mouse in my bedroom a couple of months ago and the internet says mice will chew fabric for nesting material, but I don't see a single dropping on the shelves. (My mouse problem has since been resolved.) I also don't see any evidence of moths even inspecting the sweaters under a powerful lighted magnifying lamp, and I never saw any flying, and I would have since it's so near my bed. Help.
