hy Slowly, slowly catchy monkey By www.usingenglish.com Published On :: Sat, 09 Mar 2024 11:31:10 +0000 Softly, softly, catchee monkey is a variation of "Softly, softly, catchee monkey". It is an Ashanti (Ghana) proverb quoted by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the Boy Scouts. From the people of Ghana, Baden-Powell learnt the phrase `softly softly catchee monkey' - and he learnt that he could get the best work out of his force by dividing it into small groups, or patrols, and giving responsibility to the captain of each group. It's discussed in Eric Partridge's "Dictionary of Catch Phrases." Partridge says it means "Gently does it!" and probably appeared in the late 19th century. Origin is hazy because the phrase was largely "neglected by the editors of the relevant works of reference." Partridge quotes a paraphrase by Wilfred Granville, "Dictionary of Theatrical Terms" (1952): "Stalk your prey carefully; or, generally, to achieve an object by quiet application." Full Article

hy House Committee Approves Measure Condemning Child Pornography By www.pacatholic.org Published On :: Wed, 22 Nov 2017 16:03:40 +0000 The Health Committee within the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has approved a resolution which condemns the free availability of pornography based on the public health hazard that it presents by harming children and families across the Commonwealth. “It’s a public awareness resolution,” said Chairman Matt Baker (R-Tioga). With the resolution, Pennsylvania joins nineteen other states that have passed or introduced a similar measure. “Most people understand pornography is bad, and child pornography is particularly bad,” continued Baker. The resolution cites that due to advances in technology, young children are now exposed to pornography at alarming rates, with as many as 27% of older millennials reporting that they first encountered explicit pornography before even reaching puberty. “As someone with two small daughters, I think that it’s something we owe a certain amount of time and effort to look at,” said Rep. Eli Evankovich (R-WestmorelandAllegheny). House Resolution 519 also encourages a three-pronged approach to confronting this issue with education, prevention and research and policy change at the community and social levels. Prior to the vote, Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia) stated that her intent is to “make sure that families are aware of this issue, that it is a concern and it can become, if it not already is, a public health crisis.” Full Article Catholic Education Posts Faith + Politics Health Care Homepage Posts Life + Dignity of Person Marriage + Family Religious Liberty Social Justice anti-pornography house health committee pornography representative matt baker

hy US CPI data due Wednesday, the ranges of estimates (& why they're crucial to know) By www.forexlive.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 03:39:37 GMT Later today, Wednesday, 13 November, we get the US consumer inflation data for October 2024 due at 1330 GMT, which is 0830 US Eastern timePreviews posted already:US CPI to be released tomorrow at 8:30 AM. Expectations are for 0.2% MoMUS CPI data due Wednesday - possible upside surprise.US inflation data this week expected to show core CPI moving sideways - risk ahead higherOK, what to expect. This snapshot from the ForexLive economic data calendar, access it here.Taking a look at the range of expectations compared to the median consensus (the 'expected' in the screenshot above) for the key data points:CPI Headline y/y, expected 2.6% with the range showing:2.3% - 2.7%CPI Headline m/m expected 0.2% with the range showing:0.1 to 0.3%CPI excluding food and energy (the core rate of inflation) y/y expected 3.3% with the range showing:3.2 - 3.4%CPI excluding food and energy (the core rate of inflation) m/m expected 0.3% with the range showing:0.2 to 0.4%***Why is knowledge of such ranges important?Data results that fall outside of market low and high expectations tend to move markets more significantly for several reasons:Surprise Factor: Markets often price in expectations based on forecasts and previous trends. When data significantly deviates from these expectations, it creates a surprise effect. This can lead to rapid revaluation of assets as investors and traders reassess their positions based on the new information.Psychological Impact: Investors and traders are influenced by psychological factors. Extreme data points can evoke strong emotional reactions, leading to overreactions in the market. This can amplify market movements, especially in the short term.Risk Reassessment: Unexpected data can lead to a reassessment of risk. If data significantly underperforms or outperforms expectations, it can change the perceived risk of certain investments. For instance, better-than-expected economic data may reduce the perceived risk of investing in equities, leading to a market rally.Triggering of Automated Trading: In today’s markets, a significant portion of trading is done by algorithms. These automated systems often have pre-set conditions or thresholds that, when triggered by unexpected data, can lead to large-scale buying or selling.Impact on Monetary and Fiscal Policies: Data that is significantly off from expectations can influence the policies of central banks and governments. For example, in the case of the inflation data due today, weaker than expected will fuel speculation of nearer and larger Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) rate cuts. A stronger (i.e. higher) CPI report will diminish such expectations. the December meeting is in focus right now.Liquidity and Market Depth: In some cases, extreme data points can affect market liquidity. If the data is unexpected enough, it might lead to a temporary imbalance in buyers and sellers, causing larger market moves until a new equilibrium is found.Chain Reactions and Correlations: Financial markets are interconnected. A significant move in one market or asset class due to unexpected data can lead to correlated moves in other markets, amplifying the overall market impact.
