Beehives set up at Blackbird Forest Education Center

State officials hope a new addition at the Blackbird Forest Education Center in Townsend will become a "hive of activity" as its occupants get "busy as bees" teaching visitors about the natural environment, the valuable role bees play in crop pollination and honey production, and how forests and flowering tree species can contribute to bee health and well-being. “Trees for Bees” is the theme of the 10th “National Pollinator Week” (June 20-26, 2016). The 2016 theme highlights the many natural benefits that flowering native tree species such as tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), black willow (Salix nigra), northern catalpa (Catalpa speciosa), flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), and maples (Acer spp.) can offer to foraging bees.

The traditional welcoming ceremony was part of a two-week orientation that exposes new students to the unique cross-cultural environment of the EWC and instills an appreciation for the host indigenous Hawaiian culture.

EWC Education Programs Awarded $870K in Grants
HONOLULU (October 13, 2010) -- East-West Center education programs have been awarded three grants totaling $869,704. The recent awards are:

  • $239,594 from the U.S. Department of State to support the Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders on Global Environmental Issues . The institute aims to develop young leaders with the ability to build and maintain resilient communities in light of global environmental challenges. Through field study in Hawai‘i and Washington D.C., participants gain a better understanding of sustainability and create a clear action plan addressing an environmental concern upon their return home.
