Virtuoso Meets Maxwell: Die Export Gets a Facelift

Hello everyone, today I’d like to talk to you about the recent enhancements to Die export in the Virtuoso RF Solution, most of which were released in ICADVM 18.1 ISR10. What’s the background for these enhancements? Exporting an abstract of a Die, which basically represents the outer boundary of the Die with I/O locations, as an intermediate file to exchange information between various Cadence tools (i.e., the Innovus, Virtuoso, and Allegro platforms) is not a new feature. This capability existed even prior to the Virtuoso RF Solution. However, the entire functionality was rewritten from scratch when we first started developing the Virtuoso RF Solution because the previous feature was deemed archaic, its performance and capacity needed to be enhanced, and use model needed to be modernized. This effort has been made in various phases, with the last round being completed and released in ICADVM18.1 ISR10.(read more)

Top 5 ways the UK government can support onshore wind and meet net-zero emissions by 2050

In early June, the UK enshrined into law a commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, making Britain the first major economy to do so. Meeting this target will require substantial reliance on renewable energy from solar, tidal, hydro, and wind sources, both onshore and offshore.

Energy Infrastructure Development in East Africa: Big Potential Meets Big Roadblocks

Power infrastructure in the East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda is inherently connected to their economic growth. As urbanisation and industrialisation fuel the need for electricity in cities, the demand for electricity in East Africa is expected to grow at approximately 5.3 percent per year until 2020. To meet these requirements, generation capacity would have to increase by 37.7 percent in Uganda, 96.4 percent in Kenya, 75.3 percent in Tanzania and 115 percent in Rwanda. The government, in conjunction with development partners, must build a more favourable business environment to facilitate growth.

Google Duo now lets you make group video calls on the web, just like Google Meet

Google's video chat app got new features this week. No, the other one. No, the other other one.

In a Friday blog post, Google announced some snazzy new features for Duo, one of its three video chat services. Let's get this out of the way early: Duo is the one that's mobile-friendly and resembles FaceTime more than Hangouts and Meet.

The new features make more sense with that in mind. Google added something called "Family Mode" to Duo, in which you can draw silly little doodles on the video feed, presumably to amuse the little ones on the call. There are also AR effects you can use on one-on-one calls on Android and iOS, similar to those available on Facebook's video calls. Read more...

At 50, EWC Looks Ahead to Meet Asia Pacific Challenges

At 50, EWC Looks Ahead to Meet Asia Pacific Challenges
By Charles E. Morrison

(Note: This commentary originally appeared in The Honolulu Star-Advertiser on July 1, 2010)

In 1960, the year the East-West Center was founded by Congress to promote understanding and cooperation in the Asia Pacific region, Americans largely regarded the region as significant as the secondary Cold War theater after Europe. Today, economic and resources issues dominate U.S.-Asia-Pacific relations, a consequence of the region’s rapid economic growth. Excluded from many international organizations in 1960, China, India, Indonesia, Japan and Korea are major voices at the G-20, the world’s premier international economic institution.

Asia Pacific Recovery Policies Explored at Economic Council Meeting

Asia Pacific Recovery Policies Explored at Economic Council Meeting
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 14) – The Asia Pacific region is starting to see the effects of various stimulus packages, but a long road still lies ahead before the global economy recovers, experts said at the annual General Meeting of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, hosted this week by the East-West Center in Washington. A survey of more than 400 regional opinion leaders released during the two-day PECC conference also revealed that, while a substantial number of respondents expected much weaker economic growth in the next year, the degree of pessimism has declined compared to a previous survey conducted in October 2008.
