Genetic and Environmental Components of Neonatal Weight Gain in Preterm Infants

Several studies have focused on birth weight heritability, reporting results that range between 40% and 80%. Few studies have focused on the process of weight gain and were mainly based on heterogeneous samples of infants.

The present work looks at a uniform set of healthy preterm newborn twins. The resulting high heritability estimate could suggest using the inclusion criteria to identify genes that regulate postnatal weight gain or failure. (Read the full article)

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Infant Sleep

Twin studies provide a natural experiment that can determine the extent of genetic and environmental influences on sleep behavior. Previous studies have indicated that genes contribute moderately to sleep.

In the largest pediatric study to date, we demonstrate that the shared environment strongly influences sleep behavior in infants, with no gender differences in the results. This research provides strong impetus to future work identifying the key modifiable environmental drivers. (Read the full article)

School Environment and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: A Multilevel Longitudinal Study

Research indicates that adolescents who perceive their school to have a positive socioeducational environment are at reduced risk of developing depressive symptoms. However, there is limited evidence that school environments can influence adolescent emotional health independently from individual perceptions.

This multilevel longitudinal study shows that better school socioeducational environments, as assessed at the school level, reduce the prospective risk of depressive symptoms in adolescents. This association is shown to be independent from confounders and stronger in girls than boys. (Read the full article)

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Daytime and Nighttime Sleep Duration in Early Childhood

Sleep patterns of adult monozygotic twins are more similar than those of dizygotic twins, showing moderate heritability and little effects of environmental influences. There have been very few genetically informative studies of sleep in preschool children and results appear inconsistent.

From previous studies, we investigated daytime and nighttime continuous sleep duration longitudinally. This is the first time that the etiologies of daytime and nighttime continuous sleep duration trajectories were studied in early childhood. (Read the full article)

Environmental Risk Factors by Gender Associated With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common mental health condition diagnosed in childhood, is highly heritable, and more common in boys. Although studies have identified perinatal risk factors, no one has investigated perinatal risk factors separately in boys and girls.

Contrary to other studies, low birth weight, postterm pregnancy, low Apgar scores, and fetal distress were not risk factors for ADHD irrespective of gender. Early term deliveries increased the risk of ADHD, and oxytocin augmentation in girls may be protective. (Read the full article)

Motor Vehicle-Pedestrian Collisions and Walking to School: The Role of the Built Environment

Many studies have demonstrated that the built environment is related to both collision risk and walking to school. However, little research examines the influence of the built environment on the relationship between walking to school and pedestrian collision risk.

Increased walking was not associated with increased pedestrian collision once the effects of the built environment and socioeconomic status were modeled. Safety was related primarily to the built environment and specifically features related to road crossing. (Read the full article)

Sleep Environment Risks for Younger and Older Infants

Sudden infant death syndrome and other sleep-related causes of infant mortality have several known risk factors. Less is known about the association of those risk factors at different times during infancy.

Risk factors for sleep-related infant deaths may be different for different age groups. The predominant risk factor for younger infants is bed-sharing, whereas rolling to prone, with objects in the sleep area, is the predominant risk factor for older infants. (Read the full article)

Sleep Duration, Restfulness, and Screens in the Sleep Environment

Inadequate sleep has been identified as a risk factor for obesity and other outcomes. Screen time and the presence of a television in the bedroom have been associated with inadequate sleep, but little is known about small screens (eg, smartphones).

Among 2048 fourth- and seventh-graders, children who slept near a small screen reported shorter sleep durations and perceived insufficient rest or sleep. Presence of a television in the bedroom and more screen time were also associated with poorer sleep. (Read the full article)

Home Reading Environment and Brain Activation in Preschool Children Listening to Stories

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parent-child reading from infancy through at least kindergarten, the span of maximal brain growth. Home literacy environment, including reading behaviors and access to books, has been shown to promote oral language and print concepts.

Home reading environment is positively associated with activation of brain areas supporting narrative comprehension and mental imagery in preschool children. This offers novel insight into the neurobiological foundations of emergent literacy and potential effect of shared reading during early childhood. (Read the full article)

Common Desktop Environment 2.3.1 Buffer Overflow

A buffer overflow in the CheckMonitor() function in the Common Desktop Environment 2.3.1 and earlier and 1.6 and earlier, as distributed with Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 (Update 11) and earlier, allows local users to gain root privileges via a long palette name passed to dtsession in a malicious .Xdefaults file. Note that Oracle Solaris CDE is based on the original CDE 1.x train, which is different from the CDE 2.x codebase that was later open sourced. Most notably, the vulnerable buffer in the Oracle Solaris CDE is stack-based, while in the open source version it is heap-based.

Common Desktop Environment 1.6 Local Privilege Escalation

A buffer overflow in the _SanityCheck() function in the Common Desktop Environment version distributed with Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 (Update 11) and earlier allows local users to gain root privileges via a long calendar name or calendar owner passed to sdtcm_convert in a malicious calendar file. The open source version of CDE (based on the CDE 2.x codebase) is not affected, because it does not ship the vulnerable program. Versions 1.6 and below are affected.

A difficult to exploit stack-based buffer overflow in the _DtCreateDtDirs() function in the Common Desktop Environment version distributed with Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 (Update 11) and earlier may allow local users to corrupt memory and potentially execute arbitrary code in order to escalate privileges via a long X11 display name. The vulnerable function is located in the libDtSvc library and can be reached by executing the setuid program dtsession. Versions 2.3.1 and below as well as 1.6 and earlier are affected.
