Different packing motifs mediated by weak interactions and polymorphism in the crystal structures of five 2-(benzylidene)benzosuberone derivatives

The syntheses and crystal structures of five 2-benzylidene-1-benzosuberone [1-benzosuberone is 6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzo[7]annulen-5-one] derivatives, viz. 2-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-1-benzosuberone, C19H18O2, (I), 2-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-1-benzosuberone, C20H20O2, (II), 2-(4-benzylbenzylidene)-1-benzosuberone, C25H22O2, (III), 2-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-1-benzosuberone, C18H15ClO, (IV) and 2-(4-cyanobenzylidene)-1-benzosuberone, C19H15NO, (V), are described. The conformations of the benzosuberone fused six- plus seven-membered ring fragments are very similar in each case, but the dihedral angles between the fused benzene ring and the pendant benzene ring differ somewhat, with values of 23.79 (3) for (I), 24.60 (4) for (II), 33.72 (4) for (III), 29.93 (8) for (IV) and 21.81 (7)° for (V). Key features of the packing include pairwise C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds for (II) and (IV), and pairwise C—H⋯N hydrogen bonds for (V), which generate inversion dimers in each case. The packing for (I) and (III) feature C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which lead to [010] and [100] chains, respectively. Weak C—H⋯π interactions consolidate the structures and weak aromatic π–π stacking is seen in (II) [centroid–centroid separation = 3.8414 (7) Å] and (III) [3.9475 (7) Å]. A polymorph of (I) crystallized from a different solvent has been reported previously [Dimmock et al. (1999) J. Med. Chem. 42, 1358–1366] in the same space group but with a packing motif based on inversion dimers resembling that seen in (IV) in the present study. The Hirshfeld surfaces and fingerprint plots for (I) and its polymorph are compared and structural features of the 2-benzylidene-1-benzosuberone family of phases are surveyed.

Different packing motifs in the crystal structures of three molecular salts containing the 2-amino-5-carboxyanilinium cation: C7H9N2O2+·Cl−, C7H9N2O2+·Br− and C7H9N2O2+·NO3−·H2O

The syntheses and crystal structures of three molecular salts of protonated 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid, viz. 2-amino-5-carboxyanilinium chloride, C7H9N2O2+·Cl−, (I), 2-amino-5-carboxyanilinium bromide, C7H9N2O2+·Br−, (II), and 2-amino-5-carboxyanilinium nitrate monohydrate, C7H9N2O2+·NO3−·H2O, (III), are described. The cation is protonated at the meta-N atom (with respect to the carboxy group) in each case. In the crystal of (I), carboxylic acid inversion dimers linked by pairwise O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds are seen and each N—H group forms a hydrogen bond to a chloride ion to result in (100) undulating layers of chloride ions bridged by the inversion dimers into a three-dimensional network. The extended structure of (II) features O—H⋯Br, N—H⋯Br and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds: the last of these generates C(7) chains of cations. Overall, the packing in (II) features undulating (100) sheets of bromide ions alternating with the organic cations. Intermolecular interactions in the crystal of (III) include O—H⋯O, O—H⋯(O,O), N—H⋯O, N—H⋯N and O—H⋯N links. The cations are linked into (001) sheets, and the nitrate ions and water molecules form undulating chains. Taken together, alternating (001) slabs of organic cations plus anions/water molecules result. Hirshfeld surfaces and fingerprint plots were generated to give further insight into the intermolecular interactions in these structures. The crystal used for the data collection of (II) was twinned by rotation about [100] in reciprocal space in a 0.4896 (15):0.5104 (15) ratio.

Scaling diffraction data in the DIALS software package: algorithms and new approaches for multi-crystal scaling

In processing X-ray diffraction data, the intensities obtained from integration of the diffraction images must be corrected for experimental effects in order to place all intensities on a common scale both within and between data collections. Scaling corrects for effects such as changes in sample illumination, absorption and, to some extent, global radiation damage that cause the measured intensities of symmetry-equivalent observations to differ throughout a data set. This necessarily requires a prior evaluation of the point-group symmetry of the crystal. This paper describes and evaluates the scaling algorithms implemented within the DIALS data-processing package and demonstrates the effectiveness and key features of the implementation on example macromolecular crystallographic rotation data. In particular, the scaling algorithms enable new workflows for the scaling of multi-crystal or multi-sweep data sets, providing the analysis required to support current trends towards collecting data from ever-smaller samples. In addition, the implementation of a free-set validation method is discussed, which allows the quantification of the suitability of scaling-model and algorithm choices.

Determination of stacking ordering in disordered close-packed structures from pairwise correlation functions

It is shown how to reconstruct the stacking sequence from the pairwise correlation functions between layers in close-packed structures. First, of theoretical interest, the analytical formulation and solution of the problem are presented when the exact pairwise correlation counts are known. In the second part, the practical problem is approached. A simulated annealing procedure is developed to solve the problem using as initial guess approximate solutions from previous treatments. The robustness of the procedure is tested with synthetic data, followed by an experimental example. The developed approach performs robustly over different synthetic and experimental data, comparing favorably with the reported methods.

Recycled plastic reduces carbon footprint of packaging

Increasing the use of recycled materials could substantially reduce the carbon footprint of plastic packaging, research suggests. A new study of the life-cycle of plastic trays has shown that increasing the proportion of recycled material could lead to a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Dutch study shows policy effective in reducing packaging

Policies to reduce packaging are effective as long as they remain in place for at least five years and aim for an absolute reduction in packaging volume, experiences from the Netherlands suggest. A study of Dutch packaging policy found that packaging levels fell when such policies were in place, but that the amount of packaging has since risen as policies have become more short-term and focused on reducing packaging levels relative to changes in GDP.

Manufacturers should stress ‘green’ packaging qualities to educate consumers on real impact

Consumers in France, Germany and the USA perceive ‘environmentally friendly’ packaging to be reusable, recyclable and ‘biodegradable’1, finds a new study. These results suggest that producers should emphasise the end-of-life merits of packaging to appeal to consumers’ environmental concerns, and design packaging that is reusable, recyclable and ‘biodegradable’. However, they also indicate a need to raise public awareness of packaging’s true life-cycle environmental impacts, such as those during production and transport, which are greater than consumers generally perceive them to be.

Food packaging: a practical guide to environmental footprint labelling

Food packaging waste is currently under scrutiny. In the context of its Circular Economy Action Plan, the EU is addressing this through, among others, its Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) initiative , which aims to enhance the reliability of environmental claims — both in a business-to-consumer and in a business-to-business context. The initiative aims, therefore, to boost the market of green and circular products. However, a review of the methods available for assessing the environmental sustainability of packaging now highlights the difficulty of clearly characterising packaging's environmental impact. The study suggests a new, fully quantifiable framework that could help to standardise assessment methods and bring 'environmental footprint labelling' to fruition.

Industry may not be paying its way in packaging waste management

Many EU businesses are failing to cover the net cost of recycling packaging waste, new research suggests. Industry is required to take responsibility for treating and recycling waste packaging in the EU; however, this study shows that producers in France, Portugal and Romania do not fully cover waste management costs.

Resource-efficient Portuguese packaging waste management system brings multiple benefits

A Portuguese waste management system for packaging has brought a range of environmental, economic and social benefits, according to a recent study. One of the scheme’s main achievements was that it avoided around 116 kilotons (kt) of CO2 equivalent emissions in a single year, equal to the emissions associated with the electricity use of 124 000 households. These emissions were largely circumvented because the system recovers large amounts of energy and materials from the waste packaging.
