Sleep Duration, Sleep Regularity, Body Weight, and Metabolic Homeostasis in School-aged Children

Associations between short sleep duration, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction have been proposed for children but have not been explored appropriately.

The main findings included a nonlinear trend between sleep duration and body weight and the finding that children's sleep averaged 8 hours per night regardless of body weight. Lower sleep duration values were strongly associated with increased metabolic risk. (Read the full article)

Calculation of Expected Body Weight in Adolescents With Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are characterized by preoccupation with weight and shape, which is manifested by a refusal to maintain a normal weight. An exact determination of expected body weight (EBW) is critical for diagnosis and clinical management of these disorders.

The McLaren and Moore methods present with several limitations when calculating EBW for adolescents with eating disorders. A commonly agreed upon method for EBW calculation such as the BMI percentile method is recommended for clinical and research purposes. (Read the full article)

Expected Body Weight in Adolescents: Comparison Between Weight-for-Stature and BMI Methods

In adolescents with eating disorders, percent expected body weight (EBW) is used for diagnosis and to make clinical decisions. The assumption is that the weight-for-stature (WFS) and BMI methods of determining EBW are equivalent, but that may not be true.

This study demonstrates that EBWWFS is ~3.5% higher than EBWBMI. Differences are most pronounced at extremes of height. Compared with the EBWWFS method, sensitivity of EBWBMI to detect those <75% EBW is low. (Read the full article)

Pneumococcal Antibody Levels in Children With PID Receiving Immunoglobulin

Although immunoglobulin replacement is recognized as effective in children with primary immunodeficiency, pneumococcal infection may occur. There is no available prospective clinical study evaluating levels of protective serospecific antibodies in patients and products.

Protective (0.2 µg/mL) antibody levels for the most frequent pneumococcal serotypes were measured in children treated for primary immunodeficiencies. A linear relationship was demonstrated between peak and trough levels of serospecific antipneumococcal antibodies in patients and infused immunoglobulins. (Read the full article)

Attention Deficit Disorder, Stimulant Use, and Childhood Body Mass Index Trajectory

Childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has been associated with both childhood and adult obesity, whereas treatment with stimulants has been associated with delayed child growth. No longitudinal studies with details about dates of diagnosis, treatment, and duration of stimulant use have been published.

Using electronic health record data, this was the first study to evaluate the independent associations of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder diagnosis, stimulant treatment, age at first stimulant use, and duration of stimulant use on longitudinal BMI trajectories throughout childhood and adolescence. Sex-Related Online Behaviors and Adolescents' Body and Sexual Self-Perceptions

Research suggests that appearance-focused messages and exaggerated depictions of sexual activity in the media negatively influence adolescents’ body and sexual self-perceptions. As adolescents increasingly use the Internet to explore their sexuality, health risks related to online behaviors should be identified.

This 4-wave study examined the prevalence and development of 2 receptive and 2 interactive sex-related online behaviors and their relations with adolescents’ body and sexual self-perceptions. It further investigated which parental strategies regarding Internet use may reduce risky sex-related online behaviors. (Read the full article)

Heart Rates in Hospitalized Children by Age and Body Temperature

Heart rate (HR) increases with increasing body temperature. Previous studies have characterized the relationship among HR, age, and temperature for patients in primary care and emergency department settings but not in hospitalized children.

Our data demonstrate an overall increase in HR by ~10 beats/minute for each 1°C increase in body temperature. Expected heart rates for hospitalized children differ from those for primary care and emergency department patients at the same age and temperature. (Read the full article)

Maternal Prepregnancy Body Mass Index and Child Psychosocial Development at 6 Years of Age

Both obesity and developmental disabilities have increased in recent decades; however, the full long-term effects of prepregnancy obesity on a child’s psychosocial development remain unknown. Limited studies suggest associations between maternal prepregnancy obesity and child psychosocial development.

This study in 6-year-old children provides evidence that severe prepregnancy obesity is associated with adverse child psychosocial outcomes, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. These findings were not explained by many pregnancy and postpartum factors related to maternal obesity or child development. (Read the full article)

Body Dissatisfaction and Mental Health Outcomes of Youth on Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy

OBJECTIVES:

Our first aim was to examine baseline differences in body dissatisfaction, depression, and anxiety symptoms by gender, age, and Tanner (ie, pubertal) stage. Our second aim was to test for changes in youth symptoms over the first year of receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy. Our third aim was to examine potential differences in change over time by demographic and treatment characteristics. Youth experiences of suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) are also reported.

METHODS:

Participants (n = 148; ages 9–18 years; mean age 14.9 years) were receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy at a multidisciplinary program in Dallas, Texas (n = 25 puberty suppression only; n = 123 feminizing or masculinizing hormone therapy). Participants completed surveys assessing body dissatisfaction (Body Image Scale), depression (Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms), and anxiety (Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders) at initial presentation to the clinic and at follow-up. Clinicians completed the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms and collected information on youth experiences of suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and NSSI.

RESULTS:

Affirmed males reported greater depression and anxiety at baseline, but these differences were small (P < .01). Youth reported large improvements in body dissatisfaction (P < .001), small to moderate improvements in self-report of depressive symptoms (P < .001), and small improvements in total anxiety symptoms (P < .01). No demographic or treatment-related characteristics were associated with change over time. Lifetime and follow-up rates were 81% and 39% for suicidal ideation, 16% and 4% for suicide attempt, and 52% and 18% for NSSI, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS:

Results provide further evidence of the critical role of gender-affirming hormone therapy in reducing body dissatisfaction. Modest initial improvements in mental health were also evident.
