gate Sri Lankan priest: Government has failed to investigate 2019 Easter bombings By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Wed, 22 Apr 2020 17:02:00 -0600 CNA Staff, Apr 22, 2020 / 05:02 pm (CNA).- A Sri Lankan priest criticized the government’s response to last year’s Easter bombings, saying the failure to thoroughly investigate has amounted to a betrayal of the people. Father Nishantha Cooray spoke to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) on the first anniversary of the bombings that targeted numerous sites across the country, including three churches, on April 21, 2019. The Easter attacks claimed over 259 lives and injured at least 500 more. Police made 135 arrests following the attacks. Former president of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena created a presidential commission to look into the perpetrators behind the bombings. Current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed a similar committee. But Cooray, who ministered at victims’ funerals, argued that the actions undertaken so far are inadequate. He warned that if the government does not take the investigation more seriously, it could lead to more attacks in the future. “Although we have completed one year [since the bombings], no acceptable step has been taken in arresting the persons involved in the crime,” he said. The priest argued that politicians made promises of a thorough investigation, and gained votes by doing so, but have not followed through on these promises. “The newly elected government started the second chapter of the same book with the same writing style… They did not want to hurt the Muslim politicians,” he said. “Now, we feel as if we are betrayed. Just to arouse the emotions of the people, the representatives of the government say something about the investigations [into the bombings]. It is only a good slogan for the next election.” The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka has appealed to the government to appoint an independent commission to conduct an impartial inquiry. Commemorating the attacks on their one-year anniversary, parishes in Sri Lanka rang church bells, encouraged people to observe a two-minute period of silence, and lit lamps in memory of the dead victims. While public Masses have been canceled in Sri Lanka because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo live-streamed Easter Mass on April 12. During the live stream, Ranjith voiced forgiveness for the attackers. “[W]e meditated on Christ's teachings and loved them, forgave them and had pity on them,” he said, according to Vatican News. “We did not hate them and return them the violence. Resurrection is the complete rejection of selfishness,” the cardinal said. Full Article Asia - Pacific
gate Scottish pro-life student group investigated, but no action taken By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Tue, 05 May 2020 14:01:00 -0600 CNA Staff, May 5, 2020 / 02:01 pm (CNA).- After complaints that a pro-life event held by the Aberdeen Life Ethics Society violated a 'safe space policy', an investigation has resulted in no action being taken against the pro-life group. Ales held an event March 12 called “Does Abortion Violate Human Rights?”, about which some students at Aberdeen University complained. Among the complaints were that it included “highly graphic material,” the Gaudie, Aberdeen University's student paper, reported April 30. Ales told the Gaudie that “In response to these unfounded complaints, we provided [the Aberdeen University Students' Association] with various examples of our efforts to warn attendees about sensitive content. We maintain that these efforts fulfilled our obligation to caution anyone who might be uncomfortable with an honest discussion of abortion (i.e., the intentional killing of antenatal humans by vacuum aspiration, poisoning, and/or dismemberment).” “Thankfully, AUSA was satisfied with our defence against these vexatious complaints and will take no action against us. We look forward to organising future public events about the ethical importance of human life in the womb, and we pledge to continue to offer clear and explicit content warnings about the grisly reality of abortion,” the pro-life group continued. Ausa told complainants that “the issues have been raised with ALES and they have provided assurances to AUSA that clearer and more explicit content warnings, and cautions will be issued, prior to showing similar videos in the future,” and that “on this basis we have concluded that no further action will be taken by AUSA against ALES and this matter is now concluded.” One of those who complained about the event, Martin Le Brech, called Ausa's decision “very disappointing,” adding: I hope AUSA will thoroughly scrutinise ALES' activities and listen to the wider University community that is utterly embarrassed such misinformation and graphic contents are regularly spread on campus. We need to make sure our University is a safe space for everybody, free of bigotry and insidious violence.” And Leah Robb, president of the Pro-Choice Society, said that if Ales “continue with similar events/demonstrations I am considering launching another complaint to AUSA.” Ales was granted affiliation by the Aberdeen student association in May 2019, following a protracted disagreement. In October 2018 Ausa had prevented the affiliation of Ales, citing its own pro-choice policy which it adopted in 2017. The policy says, in part, that “Ausa should oppose the unreasonable display of pro-life material within campus and at Ausa events.” The move limited Ale's access to funds and venues at the university. After failing to have the policy changed, Ales filed a lawsuit in April 2019 against Ausa and the university, “alleging unlawful discrimination against the society and the violation of rights protected by UK law.” In its lawsuit, Ales charged that Ausa's no platform policy violates the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998 by restricting “the freedoms of association and belief for certain students on the basis of an ideological litmus test.” According to the Gaudie, Ales received “a financial pay-out” from Ausa over the matter. After receiving affiliation, Ales stated: “We look forward to actively engaging with the student body and working to foster a civil yet honest conversation about the vitally important ethical issues surrounding human life. While there are some intolerant students who wanted our society to fail … we truly believe that there are many more students on this campus who are willing to take a fair-minded approach to this debate. These are the students we’ve heard from all along the way – they may not agree with our position, but they adamantly believe that we should be free to espouse our beliefs on campus.” Pro-life groups at other Scottish universities have faced similar problems. In 2018 the University of Strathclyde (in Glasgow) lifted a ban on pro-life groups following legal pressure. Strathclyde Sudents for Life argued that the student associaton's no platforming policy violated the Equality Act 2010 “by directly discriminating against a group of students based on their beliefs.” Glasgow Students for Life were barred from affiliation by the Glasgow University's Students' Representative Council in November 2018. In March 2018 a joint committee on human rights of the UK parliament noted troubling barriers to free speech at the nation's universities, writing: “Whilst the original intention behind safe space policies may have been to ensure that minority or vulnerable groups can feel secure, in practice the concept of safe spaces has proved problematic, often marginalising the views of minority groups.” Full Article Europe

The prevalence/correlates of MH services use in the current challenging financial environment is unknown. This study demonstrates the importance of medical providers and schools for receipt of MH services for these children, but shows disparities in MH service use between white and nonwhite children. Unlike earlier findings, MH service use declined over the follow-up. (Read the full article) Full Article
gate Protective Factors Can Mitigate Behavior Problems After Prenatal Cocaine and Other Drug Exposures By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2012-11-26T05:32:39-08:00 Prenatal cocaine exposure is associated with the trajectories of childhood behavior problems. Exposure effects may also be related to maternal use of other substances during pregnancy, and risk factors other than prenatal exposure may augment the detrimental cocaine effects. The balance between cumulative risk and protective indexes predicts behavior outcomes, independent of prenatal drug exposure. A high protective index even with a high level of risks can mitigate the detrimental effects of drug exposure on behavior problem trajectory. (Read the full article) Full Article
gate Chronic Conditions Among Children Investigated by Child Welfare: A National Sample By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2013-02-18T00:06:42-08:00 Most studies focus on health of foster children or local samples of young children. One previous study examined a national cohort longitudinally but did not address the full age group or range of conditions at the time of initial investigation.Using 2 approaches to assess children (aged 0–17.5 years) who have chronic health conditions, we found that regardless of placement, investigated children had much higher rates of these conditions than the general population at the time of initial assessment. gate Cost-Effectiveness of Using 2 vs 3 Primary Doses of 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2013-07-01T00:07:00-07:00 Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines are effective in preventing pneumococcal disease but are also costly. Although the current US immunization schedule recommends 4 doses, many countries have adopted 3-dose schedules that have worked well, but may provide less protection against pneumococcal disease.Changing the US 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine schedule from 3 to 2 primary doses while keeping a booster dose would save $412 million annually but might lead to moderate increases in pneumococcal disease, especially otitis media and pneumonia. gate Invasive Pneumococcal Disease After Implementation of 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2014-07-07T05:07:01-07:00 Invasive pneumococcal disease causes enormous morbidity in children. The spectrum and severity of illness caused by pneumococcal serotypes not present in the current vaccine, and whether the clinical profile and severity of disease have changed, are largely unknown.Initial data suggest that nonvaccine serotypes are more common in children with underlying conditions, who have greater morbidity from disease. In the post-PCV13 era, a larger proportion of patients are hospitalized, but mortality rates are unchanged. (Read the full article) Full Article
gate Sinusitis and Pneumonia Hospitalization After Introduction of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2014-11-10T00:06:19-08:00 Pneumococcal conjugated vaccines (PCVs) are known to decrease invasive pneumococcal disease in children, but their effect on pneumonia necessitating hospitalization is more variable across study sites, and effects on hospitalization for sinusitis have not been shown previously. There was a significant decrease in hospitalizations for sinusitis in children <2 years of age, and hospitalization for pneumonia decreased in children aged <5 years after sequential introduction of PCV7 and PCV13. gate 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) in Preterm Versus Term Infants By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2015-03-16T00:05:25-07:00 Preterm infants are at an increased risk of infections; therefore, vaccination is of particular importance. Because immune response data reported for preterm infants may vary according to gestational age and vaccination timing, vaccine responses in this population warrant additional research. This study evaluated 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in preterm infants. Results suggest that this vaccine was well tolerated and immunogenic; most subjects achieved serotype-specific immunoglobulin G antibody levels and functional antibody responses likely to correlate with protection against invasive disease. gate Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine and Clinically Suspected Invasive Pneumococcal Disease By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2015-06-15T00:06:46-07:00 Conventional invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) definition using laboratory confirmation lacks sensitivity. Using a vaccine-probe design, the FinIP trial showed that IPD disease burden and vaccine-preventable disease incidence were fourfold higher when a more sensitive outcome, clinically suspected IPD, was used.Vaccine-preventable disease incidence (ie, absolute reduction due to PCV10 vaccination) during routine vaccination program was threefold with the more sensitive outcome of clinically suspected IPD compared with the conventional IPD definition. This has major implications for cost-effectiveness of PCVs. (Read the full article) Full Article
