The power industry is facing a nuclear power dilemma, according to a report published by The Union of Concerned Scientists. UCS assessed the economic viability and performance of nuclear power plants operating in the United States and concluded that the retirement of these plants will likely result in the adoption of coal and natural gas for baseload power generation, two energy sources that contribute to carbon dioxide emissions.

In June, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule to restrict the amount of carbon dioxide released from power plants. The rule calls for reducing carbon 30 percent by 2030 over 2005 levels. Many have praised the aggressive proposal, while others are less favorable.

This rule establishes criteria that hospitals and physicians must meet to qualify as "meaningful users" of electronic health records and receive further financial incentives in Stage 2 of the HITECH Act Electronic Health Record Incentive Program. The program, part of the economic stimulus package, is providing billions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid incentives to spur widespread adoption of EHRs.
