ign Relaxing Victorians: Casual Wear From Unseen to Seen to Seen by Only a Few ~ Wrappers & Peignoirs & Dressing Gowns to Morning Dresses & Tea Gowns to Lingerie from Gail Carriger By retrorack.blogspot.com Published On :: Wed, 18 Dec 2019 17:17:00 +0000 One of the things the Victorian era saw, Fashionable Reader, was an exploration of that liminal space through casual around the house wear.Wrapper 1855 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtHere we have the wrapper that was only meant to be seen by family.Dressing Gown early 1870s The Metropolitan Museum of ArtDressing Gown 1875 The Kyoto Costume Institute Dressing gowns, banyans and wrappers are often quilted all or in part.Wrapper early 1860s The Metropolitan Museum of ArtOne of the signs of a wrapper is that the waist is designed to be loose or tied tight. Often they split up the front, like a carriage dress or a robe so they can be pulled over a nightgown or underpinnings, like a dressing down but slightly more tailored. Still NOT designed to be worn over a corset. Peignoir 1860-1865 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtPeignoir 1880s The Metropolitan Museum of Art Peignoir seems to be a catch all term. Morning Dress 1872-1873 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtOne of the things we see evolving (and limits being tested) after the 1950s through the 1900s is the idea of what was not meant to be seen (undergarments and nightgowns) to what was initially only meant to be seen by family or lovers (wrappers & peignoirs) to receiving casual around house guests at breakfast (morning dresses) to I'm comfortable at home and I want to show my wealth with yet another space & occasion specific outfit (the tea gown).Tea Gown late 1870s The Los Angeles County Museum of ArtTea gowns were an evolution of the morning gown.Tea Gown 1875 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtTea Gown 1875-1880 The Metropolitan Museum of Art1Harpers Bazar New York Sat June 13 1891 Dressing Gowns NightshirtsThis evolution is coupled with the rise of the middle class, the sexual revolution (including contraception and woman's suffrage) and various other factors.Bed Jacket 1885 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtDressing Jacket 1885-1890 The Metropolitan Museum of Art We see a culmination in this towards the turn of the century in the popularity of (and wide-scale use of the word) negligées and lingerie sets, which specifically implies an article of clothing that is sexual in its nature for it is meant to be seen by a lover. Negligée 1880 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtThis kind of clothing, prior to the first sexual revolution, would not have been acceptable for a fashion house to make, let alone a fashionable lady to purchase.Negligée Callot Soeurs, 1898-1900s The Metropolitan Museum of ArtLingerie Set 1880s The Metropolitan Museum of Art There was also head wear that was designed to be worn exclusively around the house, but that's a whole other story...House Cap 1900 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtFor Primrose!Boudoir Cap 1895 The Metropolitan Museum of Artnightgown 1894 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtDressing Gown 1897-1899 The Metropolitan Museum of ArtRetro Rack is also on facebook where I post additional images and fashion thoughts. You can shop my recommendations via the following lists: Steampunk, Retro Jewelry, Makeup, Retro Clothes, LifestyleProduct links on this blog are usually to Amazon using my associate code. ign Would fundamental rights in Malta be better off under British sovereignty? By maltaobserver.blogspot.com Published On :: Tue, 28 Feb 2012 08:46:00 +0000 Once more, one does not know if to cry or laugh; no, of course one should not laugh at the tragedy that Malta is causing many of the people in this country. In the former communist states, people were kept in prison without a trial. In Malta the state does exactly the same, see article in todays The Times. As stated before, the judicial system in Malta has collapsed and a thought has come to The Observer’s mind: In this sense may be Malta should be better off under British sovereignty. It is obvious to a foreigner that the government of Malta cannot live up to the most fundamental requirements for democracy, namely the one that a democracy do not keep people in prison without fair trials. ign "Three Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Designing Languages" By lambda-the-ultimate.org Published On :: Tue, 19 Mar 2019 00:20:53 +0000 The transcript of Three Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Designing Languages, a talk given by Peter Alvaro somewhere or other, is up at Info Q. Peter Alavaro's main research interest is in taming distributed systems. He starts his talk with the provocative thesis, "In the future, all radical new languages will be domain-specific languages." He talks of the evolution of his ideas about dealing with distributed systems: Little interest by designers of programming-language designers in filling huge difficulty of debugging in context of distributed systems; PLs often make handling of data somewhat implicit, even with functional programming, which he says is dangerous in distributed programming; To talk about the flow of data properly, we need to talk about time; Two things that influenced him as a grad student: Jeff Ullman's claim that encapsulation and declarativity are in tension, and Fagin's theorem (the existential fragment of second-order logic characterises NP); Idea that distributed systems can be considered as protocols specified a bit like SQL or Datalog queries; Triviality with query languages of characterising the idea of place in distributive systems: they are just another relation parameter; Describing evolution of a system in time can be done with two other things: counters and negation, leading to Bertram Ludäscher's language Statelog. But this way of doing things leads to the kind of low-level overexpressive modelling he was trying to avoid; "What is it about...protocols that they seem to require negation to express?” Turns out that if you drop negation, you characterise the protocols that deliver messages deterministically. He summarises by saying the only good reason to design a programming language (I assume he means a radically novel language) is to shape your understanding of the problem. No regrets of being the only user of his first language, Datalist, because the point is that it shaped all his later thought in his research. Full Article Parallel/Distributed

ign Trump Signs Executive Order Greenlighting 'Corporate Takeover Of Oceans' By crooksandliars.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 02:00:01 +0000 Donald Trump issued an executive order late Thursday that environmentalists warned will accelerate the corporate exploitation of oceans by relaxing regulations on and streamlining the construction of industrial offshore aquaculture facilities, which critics deride as "floating factory farms" that pump pollution and diseases into public waters. The Don't Cage Our Ocean Coalition, which was formed to oppose ocean industrial fish farming, said in a statement that Trump's Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth "mandates federal agencies to craft a program for rapid authorization of industrial offshore aquaculture facilities, which use giant floating cages to cultivate finfish, allowing toxic pollution to flow into open waters." "The federal government should strengthen local food security during this health crisis by supporting sustainable seafood, rather than allowing corporations to pollute the ecosystems we depend on." —Marianne Cufone, environmental attorneyread more Full Article factory farms oceans trump
