Another Workplace Crisis: Loneliness

Vivek Murthy, former U.S. Surgeon General, says that, even before the Covid-19 pandemic, we were facing another health crisis: loneliness. Studies show that, around the world, more people have been feeling a greater sense of social isolation, which has many negative affects, including increased blood pressure, reduced immune response, and decreased engagement and productivity at work. But organizations can be a place where people find a greater sense of belonging. Murthy wants us to take loneliness more seriously and focus on fostering the types of authentic connections -- face-to-face and virtual -- that we need to combat it. He's the author of the book "Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World."

C.R. workplace shooting suspect turns self in after father drives him to Alabama police station

A man suspected of a workplace shooting last month at a vinyl window manufacturer in southwest Cedar Rapids turned himself into authorities Friday.

Jamal Devonte Edwards, 26, has been wanted since two men were shot at Associated Materials, 3801 Beverly Rd. SW, the morning of April 9.

Cedar Rapids police had indicated Edwards was wanted in particular for the shooting of Mark Robertson, 36.

Edwards faces charges of attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent and willful injury.

The U.S. Marshals Service helped locate Edwards, distributing a photo of Edwards along the Gulf Coast. He was located in Mobile, Ala. when his father brought him to the Mobile police department so he could turn himself in, according to a Cedar Rapids police news release.

The April 9 shooting was reported at 5:03 a.m. after two employees were shot at Associated Materials. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said at the time it appeared the shooter knew the two men.

Shawn Hardy, senior vice president of integrated products for Associated Materials, confirmed Edwards worked at the Cedar Rapids business, which gave him access to the building, but said he had been employed through a temp agency.

Workplace Revolution with Amy Nelson

Amy Nelson is the founder and CEO of The Riveter. If you’re not familiar with The Riveter, it’s a modern day union of women and their allies. It’s a community, a workspace and resource that supports women in building business and careers. The Riveter has locations all throughout the US and is growing rapidly. I cannot wait for you to hear this story. Amy Nelson practiced corporate litigation for over a decade in New York City and Seattle and worked in politics under several presidents. But it wasn’t until she was a mother that she started noticing something. Conversations no longer were about her career, but how motherhood would impact her career. Why was it not possible to “have it all”: be the best lawyer, the best wife, and mother? Looking for inspiration, she discovered a telling statistic: 43% of highly trained professional women “off-ramp” after having kids. It was then an idea started to form. In this episode we explore: How a bold concept can go from idea to reality. How Amy raised money and grew a national company in 2.5 years Being a vulnerable leader + the emotional journey of exploring and building something new How can we all […]

Tools and methods for processing microelectronic workpieces using process chamber designs that easily transition between open and closed modes of operation

Strategies for tool designs and their uses wherein the tools can operate in either closed or open modes of operation. The tools easily transition between open and closed modes on demand. According to one general strategy, environmentally controlled pathway(s) couple the ambient to one or more process chambers. Air amplification capabilities upstream from the process chamber(s) allow substantial flows of air to be introduced into the process chamber(s) on demand. Alternatively, the fluid pathways are easily closed, such as by simple valve actuation, to block egress to the ambient through these pathways. Alternative flows of nonambient fluids can then be introduced into the process chamber(s) via pathways that are at least partially in common with the pathways used for ambient air introduction. In other strategies, gap(s) between moveable components are sealed at least with flowing gas curtains rather than by relying only upon direct physical contact for sealing.
