Maroon 5 called out for faking 'Sugar' wedding crashing

A screenshot from Maroon 5's "Sugar" music video.; Credit: Maroon 5

Mike Roe

Maroon 5 has a new music video built around a simple, viral-bait premise: Adam Levine and the rest of the band trying to crash as many weddings around Los Angeles as they can in one day (Dec. 6 of last year). It's a lot of fun, directed by "Wedding Crashers" movie director David Dobkin, but it appears that some of those "crashed weddings" may have been staged.

Watch the video (warning: contains adult language):

Maroon 5: Sugar

Fans have noticed that several of the couples seen in the video appear to be actors. Actors Stephen and Barbara Woo posted on Facebook that they played the parents of one of the brides in the video and said that not only were the weddings staged, they didn't even take place on one day, claiming that all the weddings were shot in the same location over the course of three days.

Facebook post by actors

The groom from the wedding featured the most in the video has been named by observers as Nico Evers-Swindell, according to Cosmopolitan. Evers-Swindell was already married to actress Megan Ferguson since 2011 — and she's not the "bride" in the video.

Fans have fingered one of the models as "America's Next Top Model" runner-up Raina Hein, according to Cosmopolitan. Also, the man believed to be her long-term boyfriend isn't the groom in the Maroon 5 weddings.

Don't lose heart, though — at least one of the weddings in the video appears to be real, with wedding photographer Duke Khodaverdian telling E! that yes, it was the real deal.

"It was an incredible surprise and everyone at the wedding is going to cherish those memories," Khodaverdian told E! in December.

A representative for the band told "Entertainment Tonight" that only the grooms knew about the band in each case — but it looks like that means in the case of the real crashed weddings. The representative did concede that some shots "had to be shot separately from the real weddings due to time and space constraints that were given," and the article does note that the video was shot over three days.

Levine expressed his excitement about crashing the weddings in an interview with People magazine.

"I had no idea I would be affected by the overwhelming reactions we received from the couples and guests," Levine said. He told "Entertainment Tonight" that it was stressful to arrange, but that the surprise felt good. "[We were] happy that they liked our band, too – [that] would have been a total disaster."

They also solicited Twitter to find people lip-syncing "Sugar" to possibly put in their music video, but it doesn't look like those submissions got used.

Maroon 5 Sugar tweet

If you want to see Levine involved in a different dubious outfit, you can see him back hosting "The Voice" on Feb. 23. Open call auditions for the show begin Jan. 24 in New York, with Los Angeles auditions on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

Did you spot any more actors you recognize in this video? Do you have any more evidence of any of these weddings being either real or faked? Let me know on Twitter at @MikeRoe.

OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities calls for renewed dialogue between all political and social actors in Croatia

OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Astrid Thors visited Croatia from 9 to 10 May 2016. During her visit, Thors focused on promoting the effective implementation of the Constitutional Act on the Rights of National Minorities, in particular the provisions regarding languages and scripts; on education matters; and, on issues pertaining to national minorities and good neighbourly relations.

Concerned that marginalizing or stigmatizing national minorities poses a threat to the cohesion of society and to bilateral relations, Thors urged the systematic condemnation of discriminatory rhetoric or conduct.

“Divisive rhetoric has proven a dangerous path. The more diversity, the richer a society is, as different cultures are the shared wealth of all,” Thors said. “It is crucial to foster a sense of belonging for all members of society in order to effectively promote the integration process,” she added. Thors called for ensuring the protection of the rights of national minorities whilst avoiding polarization of the society along ethnic lines, consistent with The Ljubljana Guidelines on the Integration of Diverse Societies, published by HCNM in 2012.

The High Commissioner also emphasized the need for a renewed dialogue between all political and social actors to overcome difficulties, including those related to the protection of minority rights, in a consultative manner. In this context, Thors welcomed the thorough process of the curricular reform and reiterated her support to teaching of a common curriculum, regardless of the instruction language, as an effective way to integrate diverse societies and provide for common points of understanding.

Thors was encouraged by the prospect of further co-operation with Croatian institutions. She also welcomed the attention given to the existing joint bilateral inter-governmental commissions. “Co-ordination of efforts with neighbouring countries in this field and the active role played by all ministries under the auspices of the State Office of Croats Abroad could consolidate the shared European aspirations in the neighbourhood,” Thors noted.

The High Commissioner met a variety of key interlocutors in Zagreb. These included Zdravka Bušić, Deputy Foreign Minister; Dubravka Jurlina Alibegović, Minister of Public Administration; Predrag Šustar, Minister of Science, Education and Sports; Furio Radin, Milorad Pupovac, Ivan Radić, and Marko Sladojev, Chairperson and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Human and National Minority Rights, respectively; Aleksandar Tolnauer, President of the Council for National Minorities; Lora Vidović, Ombudsman; Branko Sočana, Director of the Government Office for Human Rights and Rights of the National Minorities; and Zvonko Milas, Head of the State Office for Croats Abroad.

'I'm not allowed to talk about turtles anymore': 20+ Employees who had HR step in for the silliest reasons

Doing human resources work isn't always serious. Sometimes, it can be very funny, as the people of the internet will tell you!

Though they're sometimes known as the company boogeyman, the human resources department is sometimes needed to step in and sort out employee relations. They have a broad range of job duties, from managing an office to hiring and firing to mediating employee disputes. This can result in some awkwardness at times. As these HR professionals can tell you, it can be very awkward to try and figure out which employee is the one stinking up the office with their BO or talking to an employee about wearing appropriate office attire.

Still, these HR professionals managed to make the best out of their situations. U/sgy0003 asked people to share the "most ridiculous/hilarious complaints you ever received," and more than 2,700 people replied with their funniest tales. One person had to deal with an executive assistant who claimed her high heels prevented her from walking to the copier. Another got in trouble for their drawing of a stingray! You can check out all of these very silly tales down below.

'Did they think they were gonna make money from their wedding?': Newlyweds "devastated" after only gaining $3k from wedding instead of the $10k they expected

This newly-married couple is going to be in a world of debt after throwing a lavish wedding that didn't exactly pay off.

Weddings these days are a bit different than they were 50 years ago. Besides the obvious changes in decorum and decoration, there's a whole new tradition around gift-giving. Many couples choose to live together before marriage these days, which can be quite beneficial. You can learn if you are compatible with someone before legally declaring it forever. However, if you live with someone for a few years before marriage, you'll have to buy everything for your house in the meantime. In the past, couples were just starting out, and would move in together after marrying. Their gifts would often include cookware, baby items, furniture, or other presents designed to start a new couple off in their home.

Nowadays, you may as well give the newlyweds some cash. They probably have a lot of furniture and pots and pans already. But they might be going severely into debt to pull off their dream wedding, just like the couple here. It's an eye-opening read, as shared by @kaylajohnsonatl. Commenters debated the state of gift-giving these days–check it all out below.

After that, this interviewer lamented that "[It] is just really tacky" after noticing that a job candidate did something that gave him pause.

Wedding guest asked to leave when blacklight turns her dress into a banned color during the reception: 'I wore a dress that looks white under a black light'

You don't wear white to a well-lit or naturally-lit normal wedding. Apparently, you also don't wear yellow to a blacklight wedding either—so says this bridal party who asked a guest to leave after declaring her yellow dress to be inappropriate under the chosen ambient lighting.

While we've read about some ridiculous situations where wedding guests have worn what might-as-well-be wedding dresses to their friend's or family member's wedding affairs, I think it's fair to say that this is not one of those situations. Of course, if you were a bee or a butterfly or some other creature that can see the ultraviolet spectrum, you might be able to be willingly held accountable for wearing such a color.

I thought blacklights were pretty cool, too, when I was a teenager, but I can't imagine having blacklights for such an event as a wedding now. Still, accusing someone of not anticipating the lighting of the wedding reception is strange and petty, especially when the bride herself didn't seem to care.
