differences The challenges of debate moderating have grown along with partisan differences By www.scpr.org Published On :: Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:06:08 -0700 US President Barack Obama and Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney debate on October 16, 2012 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Undecided voters asked questions during a town hall format.; Credit: STAN HONDA/AFP/Getty Images Larry MantleThere continue to be questions about how moderators approach Presidential debates and about whether the extra time President Obama has received in the first two debates indicates moderator bias in his favor. I had chalked up the concerns to Republican hyper-partisanship, such as we saw with many Democrats criticizing Jim Lehrer for his moderating — as though Obama would’ve won the first debate if only Lehrer had asserted himself more. However, even CNN has been doing significant follow-up on its own Candy Crowley’s performance in debate number two. Maybe it’s not just hardcore GOP loyalists who are questioning Crowley’s decision-making on when to cut in and when to allow the candidates to take more time. I thought she did pretty well, but there are plenty of critics. As someone who has moderated hundreds of debates, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what we’ve seen so far in this election. Though I’ve never moderated a Presidential debate, with its incredible level of attention, concern about rules, and demands by campaigns, there are certain fundamentals regardless of the office or issue at stake. Time Doesn't Matter...Too MuchFirst, as strange as this may sound, the time taken by each candidate has little to do with who has an advantage. Yes, it’s always possible for a candidate to use another minute to fire off the defining line of the night. However, the well-practiced zingers or essential policy explainers are not left to the end of a candidate’s statement, as the clock is running out. I’m sure Mitt Romney wasn’t thinking after the last debate, “If only I would’ve had that extra 90-seconds, and Obama hadn’t gotten 90 more than he deserved.” Both men front-loaded their major talking points and were going to get them in. Neither man could legitimately say he didn’t have a chance to make his strongest points. At some point, a time advantage could make a difference in who wins or loses, but an extra 90-seconds in a debate longer than 90-minutes isn’t going to do it. Serving The AudienceAs a moderator, you also have to think about what best serves your audience. I never guarantee candidates equal time, as it’s my job to serve the listeners, not their campaigns. I strive to get close to equal time, but can’t make any guarantee. Some speakers get to the point succinctly and have their points well put together. Others are messier in their arguments and eat up time just building up any head of steam. If the moderator holds to a strict time limit, you run the risk of frustrating listeners by cutting off the rambler just as the candidate is getting to the point. There are methods a moderator can use to help guide the speaker toward being more succinct, but there’s no guarantee the person will be able to comply. Isn’t this inherently unfair to the succinct speaker? No. The purpose of the debate is to allow the ideas to compete. It’s not a boxing match that’s about landing punches in a given time. The succinct debater has a big advantage, regardless of how much time the candidate has. That’s why Mitt Romney’s victory in the first debate was so lopsided — he won on the conciseness and clarity of his answers, coupled with Obama’s inability to get to his central points. Obviously, there are those who thought Obama’s arguments were still more compelling than Romney’s, and that Romney lacked essential details. However, for most viewers of the first debate, it was stylistically no contest. Equal Time Is Not A GuaranteeWhen candidates are allowed to talk to each other directly, it’s very difficult to assure equal time. Even CNN’s clock that registers elapsed time for each candidate is subject to squishiness. Unless a debate is extremely formal, with carefully controlled time limits and a ban on candidates following-up with each other, you’re only going to have an approximation of time balance. I thought Crowley did pretty well to land the second debate with the balance she did. I’m not sure I could get it that close for a debate of that length. She had the added challenge of trying to determine when to cut in on President Obama’s lengthier answers. Also, Romney’s speaking rhythm allows more space for interruption. It’s tougher to break in on Obama. Moderating Is A Balancing ActModerators are always trying to balance a need to move on to the next topic with allowing a candidate to answer an opponent’s charge. Sometimes, you open that door for a candidate, only to regret it later when the politician starts into a monologue, instead of confining the response to the previous challenge. Sometimes moderators, having gotten burned, will become less tolerant of such expansive rebuttals, as the debate goes on. Moderators are always juggling competing goals, and it’s a difficult job (at least for me). Unfortunately, there are those who think debate moderators attempt to influence the outcome of the debate and the performances of the candidates. Maybe I’m naïve, but I can’t imagine any journalist who’s worked hard enough to get to the position of Presidential debate moderator subordinating his or her career in an effort to getting someone elected. Mainstream political journalism is like national sports reporting. You really don’t care who wins the Super Bowl, you want great story lines to explore with your audience. Yes, sports reporters have affinities for the hometown teams of their youth, but that can’t compete with the professional goal of covering great stories. Yes, most journalists in mainstream media probably have a stronger cultural and political affinity for Obama, as he’s more like them. However, it doesn’t mean a journalist is going to sacrifice the better story to intentionally provide a benefit to the President. This content is from Southern California Public Radio. differences The Role of the Rat Prefrontal Cortex and Sex Differences in Decision-Making By www.jneurosci.org Published On :: 2024-11-13T09:30:19-08:00 The prefrontal cortex is critical for decision-making across species, with its activity linked to choosing between options. Drift diffusion models (DDMs) are commonly employed to understand the neural computations underlying this behavior. Studies exploring the specific roles of regions of the rodent prefrontal cortex in controlling the decision process are limited. This study explored the role of the prelimbic cortex (PLC) in decision-making using a two-alternative forced-choice task. Rats first learned to report the location of a lateralized visual stimulus. The brightness of the stimulus indicated its reward value. Then, the rats learned to make choices between pairs of stimuli. Sex differences in learning were observed, with females responding faster and more selectively to high-value stimuli than males. DDM analysis found that males had decreased decision thresholds during initial learning, whereas females maintained a consistently higher drift rate. Pharmacological manipulations revealed that PLC inactivation reduced the decision threshold for all rats, indicating that less information was needed to make a choice in the absence of normal PLC processing. μ-Opioid receptor stimulation of the PLC had the opposite effect, raising the decision threshold and reducing bias in the decision process toward high-value stimuli. These effects were observed without any impact on the rats’ choice preferences. Our findings suggest that PLC has an inhibitory role in the decision process and regulates the amount of evidence that is required to make a choice. That is, PLC activity controls "when," but not "how," to act. Full Article

differences Royal Enfield Classic 650 vs Shotgun 650: differences explained By www.autocarindia.com Published On :: Sat, 9 Nov 2024 07:00:00 +1000 The Classic 650 Twin is the latest model from Royal Enfield to use the 648cc parallel-twin engine. Its design and feature-set are shared with the evergreen Classic 350 but most of the fundamentals are borrowed from the Shotgun 650. We list all the differences between the two 650s. Classic vs Shotgun: design and colours When the Shotgun 650 debuted, it didn’t really fit into any particular genre of motorcycle, with Royal Enfield describing it as a blank canvas for the custom scene. The Shotgun’s engine, exhaust and other bits are blacked-out on all its paint options for a mean, modern look. On the other hand, the Classic 650 Twin stays true to its name and has a charming, retro design. There is a lot of chrome on the bike and the colour palette is also very tastefully retro. Also See: Royal Enfield Shotgun 650: Bullseye, or a shot in the dark? Classic vs Shotgun: suspension, wheels and tyres Both bikes use the same engine, main frame and brakes but other cycle parts are a major area of difference. The Classic 650 Twin trades the Shotgun’s 18/17-inch alloy wheel combo for a more retro 19/18-inch wire-spoke wheel setup. Where the Shotgun rolls on tubeless CEAT Zoom Cruz rubber, the Classic runs on new MRF Nylohigh tyres, developed specifically for it. The Classic is suspended by a 43mm telescopic fork up front in contrast to the USD fork seen on the Shotgun. While the suspension componentry has changed, the travel has stayed the same at 120mm. Both bikes use twin shock absorbers at the rear, with 90mm of travel. Classic vs Shotgun: weight, dimensions At 243kg, the Classic 650 Twin is the heaviest model in Royal Enfield’s portfolio today. The Shotgun isn’t much lighter at 240kg, although it carries 13.8 litres of fuel, 1 litre less than the Classic. With an 800mm perch, the Classic also has a slightly taller saddle than the Shotgun’s 795mm seat. Ground clearance has seen a big step up on the Classic at 154mm, compared to the 140mm available on the Shotgun. Also See: Royal Enfield Classic 650 Twin review: All-Time Classic? Full Article
differences Aprilia RS 457 vs Tuono 457: differences explained By www.autocarindia.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 07:00:00 +1000 Aprilia finally took the covers off the much-awaited Tuono 457 at this year’s EICMA, and it shares a lot of similarities with the RS 457 on which it is based. However, there are a couple of key differences. RS 457 vs Tuono 457: design, colours The biggest visual difference between the Tuono 457 and the RS 457 is the design. Unlike other Tuono models and their RS counterparts, the 457 features a brand-new headlight. Instead of the triple-pod headlight seen on most Aprilias, the Tuono 457 uses a single-pod headlight with sharp LED DRLs flanking it. The Tuono has very few body panels outside of the tank and the tail section. Where the RS 457 has a fully-faired design, the Tuono only has two small, angular panels on each side. It is available in two colours – red and white – while the RS 457 comes in three. RS 457 vs Tuono 457: seating position The Tuono is a naked bike, meaning it trades the RS’ clip-on ‘bars for a traditional handlebar. This should result in it having a more upright, all-day comfortable riding position compared to the RS’ more committed stance. RS 457 vs Tuono 457: mechanical differences The engine, main frame, suspension, brakes, and electronics are shared between the Tuono and RS 457. Both bikes even have the same 800mm seat height and 175kg kerb weight. But there are some nuanced differences. Fuel capacity on the Tuono 457 is slightly lower, at 12.7 litres, compared to the 13-litre tank seen on the RS. The Tuono also has slightly shorter gearing, with a larger rear sprocket, which should result in stronger acceleration and a small drop in outright top speed. Every Tuono has always been priced lower than the corresponding RS model. This is why it's reasonable to expect the Tuono 457 to slot in somewhere below the Rs 4.10 lakh mark (ex-showroom, India) that the RS 457 commands. differences Girls, Boys, and Bots: Gender Differences in Young Children’s Performance on Robotics and Programming Tasks By Published On :: 2016-08-29 Prior work demonstrates the importance of introducing young children to programming and engineering content before gender stereotypes are fully developed and ingrained in later years. However, very little research on gender and early childhood technology interventions exist. This pilot study looks at N=45 children in kindergarten through second grade who completed an eight-week robotics and programming curriculum using the KIWI robotics kit. KIWI is a developmentally appropriate robotics construction set specifically designed for use with children ages 4 to 7 years old. Qualitative pre-interviews were administered to determine whether participating children had any gender-biased attitudes toward robotics and other engineering tools prior to using KIWI in their classrooms. Post-tests were administered upon completion of the curriculum to determine if any gender differences in achievement were present. Results showed that young children were beginning to form opinions about which technologies and tools would be better suited for boys and girls. While there were no significant differences between boys and girls on the robotics and simple programming tasks, boys performed significantly better than girls on the advanced programming tasks such as, using repeat loops with sensor parameters. Implications for the design of new technological tools and curriculum that are appealing to boys and girls are discussed. Full Article

differences Employees’ Involuntary Non-Use of ICT Influenced by Power Differences: A Case Study with the Grounded Theory Approach By Published On :: 2015-07-29 Power differences affect implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) in a way that creates differences in ICT use. Involuntary non-use of new ICT at work occurs when employees want to use the new technology, but are unable to due to factors beyond their control. Findings from an in-depth qualitative study show how involuntary non-use of new ICT can be attributed to power differences between occupational groups in the same organization. The findings suggest that experience is a moderating variable and that closeness to formal power holders as well as closeness to the new technology increases the probability for expert control of the ICT-organization processes. These power differences favor ICT experts over ICT novices and result in a high-quality learning environment for the ICT experts characterized by autonomy, inclusion, and adequate work processes and technological solutions. The ICT novices try to navigate in a learning-hostile work environment characterized by marginalization through expert control, isolation, and inadequate work processes and technological solutions. This led to involuntary non-use by the ICT novices, while the experts became more proficient in ICT use. These findings give managers facing a technological organizational change tools to understand important mechanisms for implementing the change in their own organization, and help them take the right actions to integrate new technology and new organization of work. differences Exploring differences between bankruptcy in Russia vs. USA By english.pravda.ru Published On :: Wed, 28 Oct 2020 14:29:00 +0300 Bankruptcy isn't a topic that anyone likes to discuss. Creditors, debtors, and government officials all get a little queasy at the thought of bankruptcy, but it exists for a reason. And in many situations, it can provide relief when financial friction is heightened. But bankruptcy isn't the same in every country. Laws, rules, and stigmas differ rather significantly - particularly between Russia and the United States. The what and why of bankruptcy Bankruptcy is one of the primary methods by which control over an asset can be transferred to more capable or efficient owners in the instance of market economies. Ultimately, bankruptcy serves three distinct purposes: To solve collective action problems among creditors as they deal with insolvent debtors. To give individual debtors a chance at a "fresh start" when they're overburdened by debt. To preserve/save the financial distress firms have by reorganizing rather than liquidating. Bankruptcy is basically government-sanctioned relief that allows individuals or businesses to have debts forgiven, granted they meet specific criteria and follow certain guidelines. It plays an important role in keeping the larger economic engine hitting on all cylinders. Without bankruptcy, millions of citizens would find themselves impoverished and unable to financially recover from dire situations. Full Article Business

differences Linking solid-state phenomena via energy differences in `archetype crystal structures' By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-04-16 Categorization underlies understanding. Conceptualizing solid-state structures of organic molecules with `archetype crystal structures' bridges established categories of disorder, polymorphism and solid solutions and is herein extended to special position and high-Z' structures. The concept was developed in the context of disorder modelling [Dittrich, B. (2021). IUCrJ, 8, 305–318] and relies on adding quantum chemical energy differences between disorder components to other criteria as an explanation as to why disorder – and disappearing disorder – occurs in an average structure. Part of the concept is that disorder, as probed by diffraction, affects entire molecules, rather than just the parts of a molecule with differing conformations, and the finding that an R·T energy difference between disorder archetypes is usually not exceeded. An illustrative example combining disorder and special positions is the crystal structure of oestradiol hemihydrate analysed here, where its space-group/subgroup relationship is required to explain its disorder of hydrogen-bonded hydrogen atoms. In addition, we show how high-Z' structures can also be analysed energetically and understood via archetypes: high-Z' structures occur when an energy gain from combining different rather than overall alike conformations in a crystal significantly exceeds R·T, and this finding is discussed in the context of earlier explanations in the literature. Twinning is not related to archetype structures since it involves macroscopic domains of the same crystal structure. Archetype crystal structures are distinguished from crystal structure prediction trial structures in that an experimental reference structure is required for them. Categorization into archetype structures also has practical relevance, leading to a new practice of disorder modelling in experimental least-squares refinement alluded to in the above-mentioned publication. differences Novel Proteomic Profiling of Epididymal Extracellular Vesicles in the Domestic Cat Reveals Proteins Related to Sequential Sperm Maturation with Differences Observed between Normospermic and Teratospermic Individuals [Research] By www.mcponline.org Published On :: 2020-12-01T00:05:33-08:00 Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by the epididymal epithelium transfer to spermatozoa key proteins that are essential in promoting motility and subsequent fertilization success. Using the domestic cat model, the objectives were to (1) characterize and compare protein content of EVs between segments of the epididymis, and (2) compare EV protein compositions between normo- and teratospermic individuals (producing >60% of abnormal spermatozoa). Epididymal EVs from adult cats were isolated and assessed via liquid chromatography tandem MS. Both male types shared 3008 proteins in total, with 98 and 20 EV proteins unique to normospermic and teratospermic males, respectively. Expression levels of several proteins changed between epididymal segments in both male types. Several proteins in both groups were related to sperm motility (e.g. hexokinase 1, adenylate kinase isoenzyme) and zona pellucida or oolemma binding (e.g. disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain proteins, zona binding proteins 1 and 2). Interestingly, seven cauda-derived EV proteins trended downward in teratospermic compared with normospermic males, which may relate to poor sperm quality. Collective results revealed, for the first time, EV proteins related to sequential sperm maturation with differences observed between normospermic and teratospermic individuals. Full Article
differences Interspecies differences in proteome turnover kinetics are correlated with lifespans and energetic demands [Research] By www.mcponline.org Published On :: 2020-12-28T09:35:20-08:00 Cells continually degrade and replace damaged proteins. However, the high energetic demand of protein turnover generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that compromise the long-term health of the proteome. Thus, the relationship between aging, protein turnover and energetic demand remains unclear. Here, we used a proteomic approach to measure rates of protein turnover within primary fibroblasts isolated from a number of species with diverse lifespans including the longest-lived mammal, the bowhead whale. We show that organismal lifespan is negatively correlated with turnover rates of highly abundant proteins. In comparison to mice, cells from long-lived naked mole rats have slower rates of protein turnover, lower levels of ATP production and reduced ROS levels. Despite having slower rates of protein turnover, naked mole rat cells tolerate protein misfolding stress more effectively than mouse cells. We suggest that in lieu of rapid constitutive turnover, long-lived species may have evolved more energetically efficient mechanisms for selective detection and clearance of damaged proteins. differences Chronic Administration of Cannabinoid Agonists ACEA, AM1241, and CP55,940 Induce Sex-Specific Differences in Tolerance and Sex Hormone Changes in a Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy [Special Section: Cannabinoid Signaling in Human Health and Dise By jpet.aspetjournals.org Published On :: 2024-10-18T07:04:15-07:00 Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment, routinely manifesting as increased pain sensitivity (allodynia) in distal extremities. Despite its prevalence, effective treatment options are limited. Cannabinoids are increasingly being evaluated for their ability to treat chronic pain conditions, including CIPN. While previous studies have revealed sex differences in cannabinoid-mediated antinociception in acute and chronic pain models, there is a paucity of studies addressing potential sex differences in the response of CIPN to cannabinoid treatment. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term antiallodynic efficacy of cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1)-selective, cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2)-selective, and CB1/CB2 mixed agonists in the cisplatin CIPN model, using both male and female mice. CB1 selective agonism was observed to have sex differences in the development of tolerance to antiallodynic effects, with females developing tolerance more rapidly than males, while the antiallodynic effects of selective CB2 agonism lacked tolerance development. Compound-specific changes to the female estrous cycle and female plasma estradiol levels were noted, with CB1 selective agonism decreasing plasma estradiol while CB2 selective agonism increased plasma estradiol. Chronic administration of a mixed CB1/CB2 agonist resulted in increased mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines and endocannabinoid regulatory enzymes in female spinal cord tissue. Ovarian tissue was noted to have proinflammatory cytokine mRNA expression following administration of a CB2 acting compound while selective CB1 agonism resulted in decreased proinflammatory cytokines and endocannabinoid regulatory enzymes in testes. These results support the need for further investigation into the role of sex and sex hormones signaling in pain and cannabinoid-mediated antinociceptive effects. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT CIPN is a common side effect of chemotherapy. We have found that both CB1 and CB2 receptor agonism produce antinociceptive effects in a cisplatin CIPN model. We observed that tolerance to CB1-mediated antinociception developed faster in females and did not develop for CB2-mediated antinociception. Additionally, we found contrasting roles for CB1/CB2 receptors in the regulation of plasma estradiol in females, with CB1 agonism attenuating estradiol and CB2 agonism enhancing estradiol. These findings support the exploration of cannabinoid agonists for CIPN. Full Article
differences Sex Differences in the Neural and Behavioral Effects of Acute High-Dose Edible Cannabis Consumption in Rats [Special Section: Cannabinoid Signaling in Human Health and Disease] By jpet.aspetjournals.org Published On :: 2024-10-18T07:04:15-07:00 The consumption of 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)- or cannabis-containing edibles has increased in recent years; however, the behavioral and neural circuit effects of such consumption remain unknown, especially in the context of ingestion of higher doses resulting in cannabis intoxication. We examined the neural and behavioral effects of acute high-dose edible cannabis consumption (AHDECC). Sprague-Dawley rats (six males, seven females) were implanted with electrodes in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), dorsal hippocampus (dHipp), cingulate cortex (Cg), and nucleus accumbens (NAc). Rats were provided access to a mixture of Nutella (6 g/kg) and THC-containing cannabis oil (20 mg/kg) for 10 minutes, during which they voluntarily consumed all of the provided Nutella and THC mixture. Cannabis tetrad and neural oscillations were examined 2, 4, 8, and 24 hours after exposure. In another cohort (16 males, 15 females), we examined the effects of AHDECC on learning and prepulse inhibition and serum and brain THC and 11-hydroxy-THC concentrations. AHDECC resulted in higher brain and serum THC and 11-hydroxy-THC levels in female rats over 24 hours. AHDECC also produced: 1) Cg, dHipp, and NAc gamma power suppression, with the suppression being greater in female rats, in a time-dependent manner; 2) hypolocomotion, hypothermia, and antinociception in a time-dependent manner; and 3) learning and prepulse inhibition impairments. Additionally, most neural activity and behavior changes appear 2 hours after ingestion, suggesting that interventions around this time might be effective in reversing/reducing the effects of AHDECC. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The effects of high-dose edible cannabis on behavior and neural circuitry are poorly understood. We found that the effects of acute high-dose edible cannabis consumption (AHDECC), which include decreased gamma power, hypothermia, hypolocomotion, analgesia, and learning and information processing impairments, are time and sex dependent. Moreover, these effects begin 2 hours after AHDECC and last for at least 24 hours, suggesting that treatments should target this time window in order to be effective.: Full Article
differences Differences in Cervical Spine Fractures in Patients Younger or Older Than 65 Years of Age: Implications for the Canadian C-Spine Rule [CLINICAL PRACTICE] By www.ajnr.org Published On :: 2024-11-07T15:14:12-08:00 BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There has been a distinction made in the 2001 Canadian C-Spine Rule regarding patients 65 and older and younger than 65 years of age as far as indications for cervical spine CT scanning. We sought to determine if there are differences in the symptoms, mechanisms of injury, fracture locations, and types that are still relevant in 2024. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The institutional review board approved this retrospective study of cervical spine CT emergency department results from 2 hospitals in our health system after reviewing 5 years of data in patients experiencing trauma. In addition to the primary variable of age (younger than 65 years and 65 years and older), we looked at injury mechanism, fracture types, sites, symptoms, and operative or medical treatments. Because the demographics of our home site is different from most towns in the United States, we provide race/ethnicity data. RESULTS: Of 21,986 cervical spine CTs, 190/9455 (2.0%) participants 65 years of age and older and 199/12,531 (1.6%) participants younger than 65 years of age had fractures (total, 389/21,986, 1.8%). There were more cases of falls from standing (106, 55.8%) and falls from a height (46, 4.2%) in those 65 years and older and this mechanism was associated with a higher risk of C1 and C2 fractures (52, 27.4%; and 78, 41.1%, respectively). Among the C1 fractures, anterior and posterior arch fractures predominated (37, 19.5%). For C2 fractures, types 2 and 3 odontoid fractures (39, 20.5%; and 12, 6.3%) were more common in the older cohort. Motor vehicle collisions were more common in the younger cohort (89, 44.7%), and they were associated with more C5–C7 fractures (47, 23.6%; 60, 30.2%; and 66, 33.2%, respectively) including the facets (49, 24.6%), spinous processes (31, 15.6%), and transverse processes (52, 26.1%). Overall, the rates of instability, surgical intervention, and asymptomatic fractures were similar in the 2 age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Cervical spine fractures appear in about 1.8% of the CT scans performed in a busy emergency department environment. Fractures in the elderly occur more commonly due to falls, are located at C1 and C2, and may involve ligamentous injuries. Younger patients incur trauma more commonly due to motor vehicle collisions, and they are more likely to affect the posterior elements, especially C5–C7. The differences in trends for fractures in the 65 years of age and older and younger than 65 years of age groups have persisted since the Canadian C-Spine Rule 1996–1998 data were collected.
