WonderCon Anaheim 2015: 7 things you absolutely shouldn't miss

Mike Roe

For all the sad comic book and pop culture fans who weren't able to get tickets to San Diego Comic-Con, we've got good news for you: They run another convention, and it's closer to Los Angeles. Their little brother WonderCon Anaheim has been growing, with some comparing it to the Comic-Con of old — before it got way too crowded. It's this Friday through Sunday, April 3-5. They're starting to have big stars and lots of great panels, so if you want to get your geek heart sated, here are some of the events you won't want to miss.

Warner Bros. Presentation: San Andreas, Mad Max: Fury Road

San Andreas trailer

The most highly anticipated event at this weekend's convention, Warner Brothers is putting on a special presentation with footage from these two upcoming action films. They haven't announced which stars will be on hand, but these panels often surprise with star power, so you may get a visit from stars like "San Andreas's" Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or "Mad Max: Fury Road's" Tom Hardy or Charlize Theron. At the Comic-Con panel last year for the "Mad Max" flick, the director talked in detail about the film, so you'll probably at least get his take on the franchise and its resurrection.

DC Comics TV shows: The Flash, Gotham, iZombie

The Flash trailer

While Marvel has been dominant on the big screen, DC has put out a diverse slate of TV shows, with "The Flash" being the biggest hit among them. It's among those getting a spotlight at WonderCon, with creators and stars dishing on the programs that have captured the imaginations of TV fans and comic fans alike. All three shows are also getting special video presentations, likely showing clips of what you can expect the rest of this season. And in case you didn't already know, "iZombie" comes from "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas, so come find out about his latest project.

World Premiere: Batman vs. Robin

Batman vs. Robin trailer

It's become a tradition at both WonderCon and San Diego Comic-Con for DC Comics to debut their latest animated movie, and the new one is based on the critically acclaimed "Court of Owls" storyline by writer Scott Snyder. (Be sure to check out our previous interviews with Snyder — he's even an NPR fan.) The original story is based on how Batman thinks he knows everything there is to know about Gotham City and faces the discovery that there are deep secrets about the city that he had no idea about, and the film also emphasizes him fighting his son Damian.

Sing-alongs: Dr. Horrible & Batman's The Music Meister

Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Drives Us Bats

People go to comic conventions to geek out, and what's geekier than a good old-fashioned singalong? In addition to one for geek god Joss Whedon's much loved Web series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," they're also doing one for the musical episode of animated series "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" — which, just like "Dr. Horrible," features singing by the one and only Neil Patrick Harris. In the Batman cartoon, he plays the Music Meister, a Batman villain who makes both heroes and villains sing, as he drops some tunes of his own.

Superman: The Richard Donner Years Celebrity Super Reunion

Superman: The flying sequence

There's a reunion of stars from the first two of the classic Christopher Reeve Superman movies, including Lois Lane herself, Margot Kidder. You can also see the actors who played characters like Jimmy Olsen, several of the villains and more, as well as two of the producers. Find out what you don't know about the movie that broke ground when it came to depicting flight on-screen and, like the ads promised, made you believe a man could fly.

TV writing panels

Two panels will give you a peek into the world of the writers who write some of the hottest shows on TV: "TV Guide Magazine's Fan Favorites Showrunners" and "Inside The Writers' Room: Earth's Mightiest Writers Re-Assemble Redux." The first of those includes legendary TV showrunners like Dan Harmon of "Community" and the minds behind shows including "Orphan Black," "The Goldbergs" and more. Meanwhile, at the writers room panel, you'll get writers who've worked on shows like "Lost," "Firefly," "Heroes," "The Big Bang Theory," "Agent Carter" and more.

Fan culture programming track

This includes a lot of different panels, but it's a sign of the way fandom is shifting — it's a lifestyle that's far more diverse than it used to be, with a lot more gender parity. This track includes panels on topics like body confidence in cosplay, fashion, fitness, race and more. See what sparks your interest and might invite you into having an identity as a fan being a bigger part of your life while not letting anyone make you feel excluded.

There's so much more, like Will Forte doing a panel promoting his new show "The Last Man On Earth," the annual cosplay masquerade and so much more. Tickets are sold out for Saturday, but at press time, tickets were still available for both Friday and Sunday at WonderCon.

Without a consequence-free hook-up culture, Planned Parenthood’s business model collapses. The left’s response to Trump’s election is an existential threat… to itself! If you ever wondered why Democrats are all-in with abortion, Planned Parenthood is a massive cash source for Democrat candidates. Turntable Labs just launched a new social music platform called Hangout

Everything old is new again. Turntable Labs just launched Hangout, a social music platform that’s eerily similar to that champion of 2010s internet, Turntable.fm. The app is available as a web client or via an app for Android and iOS. It allows users to play virtual DJ, with over 100 million songs to choose from.

It not only functions like the old-school Turntable.fm. It even looks the same. There’s a stage, record players and cartoon avatars that sort of look like characters from South Park. I started my own room just to check things out and am pleasantly surprised at the sheer number of songs here that I actually like.

Turntable Labs

This is because those 100 million songs have been secured through partnerships with Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. The catalog also pulls from Merlin, which represents a vast array of indie labels and rights holders.

The company likens the experience to “gathering around a jukebox or listening to albums with friends.” It seems that way to me, as someone I don’t know just jumped in my room and started playing their own stuff. To that end, folks take turns playing DJ. There looks to be room for five people at the same time to play a game of round robin with their favorite songs.

The robust catalog is one major difference from Turntable.fm. The platform didn’t have agreements in place with labels, instead relying on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and a partnership with ASCAP. This forced a number of rules on users as to how many people could be in a room at once and how many songs could be played each hour. It looks like those rules are now dunzo.

Turntable.fm originally went dark all the way back in 2013, before showing signs of renewed life in 2021. This could be a fun retro throwback to an age when we actually got our music recommendations from people, and not algorithms.

'What exactly do you want from my husband?': Entitled Karen shopper grabs tall guy at grocery store to help her, tall guy's wife intervenes and calls her out

Most people want to be left alone when they're running their weekly errands. If you're tall and shopping at a grocery store, then you have probably been asked to help grab something from the top shelf on more than one occasion. In most of those scenarios, a decent human being would indulge the short shopper; that is, so long as they have been decent to you.

Here, we have an entitled Karen shopper who had the audacity to grab a tall stranger by his arm and drag him to where she wanted him to help her. The tall shopper tried to tell her to ask one of the several employees who were within earshot because he was worried that the item she was asking him to retrieve was too heavy and would cause a mess. This was all to no avail, of course.

At this point, the tall shopper had no choice but to get his wife to come over, and that was what got the entitled Karen to back off for good. Keep scrolling below for the full encounter. For more, check out this post about a 16-year-old's stage mom.

Ancient Saracens - Saracen was a term used by the ancient Romans to refer to a people who lived in desert areas in and around the Roman province of Arabia, and who were distinguished from Arabs - In Europe during the Middle Ages the term was expanded to i

Early and medieval Christian literature: Eusebius and Epiphanius Scholasticus, in their Christian histories, place Saracens east of the Gulf of Aqaba but beyond the Roman province of Arabia and mention them as Ishmaelites through Kedar; thus, they are outside the promise given to Abraham and his descendants through Isaac and also therefore, in Christian theology, beyond a privileged place in the family of nations or divine dispensation. The Jews viewed them as pagans and polytheists in ancient times and in later Christian times they became associated with cruel tyrants from early Christian history such as: Herod the Great, Herod Antipas and Agrippa I. Christian writings, such as those by Origen, viewed them as heretics who had to be brought into the orthodox fold. To the Christian Saint Jerome the Arabs, who were also considered in Christian theology as Ishmaelites, were also seen to fit the definition of Saracens; pagan tent-dwelling raiders of the lands on the eastern fringes of the Roman empire. -- The term Saracen carried the connotation of people living on the fringes of settled society, living off raids on towns and villages, and eventually became equated with both the "tent-dwelling" Bedouin as well as sedentary Arabs. Church writers of the period commonly describe Saracen raids on monasteries and their killing of monks. The term and the negative image of Saracens was in popular usage in both the Greek east as well as the Latin west throughout the Middle Ages. With the advent of Islam, in the Arabian peninsula, during the seventh century among the Arabs, the term's strong association with Arabs tied the term closely with not just race and culture, but also the religion. The rise of the Arab Empire and the ensuing hostility with the Byzantine Empire saw itself expressed as conflict between Islam and Christianity and the association of the term with Islam was further accentuated both during and after the Crusades. -- John of Damascus, in a polemical work typical of this attitude described the Saracens in the early 8th century thus: There is also the people-deceiving cult (threskeia) of the Ishmaelites, the forerunner of the Antichrist, which prevails until now. It derives from Ishmael, who was born to Abraham from Hagar, wherefore they are called Hagarenes and Ishmaelites. And they call them Saracens, inasmuch as they were sent away empty-handed by Sarah; for it was said to the angel by Hagar: "Sarah has sent me away empty-handed" (cf. Book of Genesis xxi. 10, 14).

Absence of Attentiveness

From 1989 to 1994 there was a show with a prescient title and approach, a show that gave rise to people including Jon Stewart and Marc Maron: “Short Attention Span Theater.” It presented bits and clips, standup and skits. Quick takes in keeping with the short attention spans that were existing then and arguably shrinking even more so now.

Market research firm MIDiA has recently conducted its annual survey of independent labels and distributors to create what it describes as “the definitive view of the independent music economy.” Modesty notwithstanding, it has sliced, diced and riced data from 5,500 companies in that space—which represents $10.6-billion of recorded music revenue—so its assessment is undoubtedly substantive, especially as it adds in financials from major labels and artist distribution platforms, thereby achieving, it claims, 93% of all recorded music revenue on a global basis.

The big labels, of course, make big money. Universal Music Group reported its Q3 2024 earnings last week, which has it that for the first nine months of 2024 the company had revenues of €8,396 million, which is a 6.3% increase over the same period in 2023. Focusing just on the Recorded Music category, the revenues were €6,335 million, up 4.9% year-over-year—and last year wasn’t at all bad.

Tragic Shooting and The Rush To Absolve

A tragic Tucson shooting prompted conservatives to hurriedly scrub websites of anti-Rep. Gabby Giffords' comments. The right wing launched a massive communications effort to absolve any responsibility for creating the volatile national setting resulting in this tragedy. It was predictable to await citing of Ronald Reagan's statement stating the individual, not society, as the cause; individuals must accept responsibility for their actions. Ironically, Reagan is not the ideal role model for this since he broke the law numerous times as President and was not accountable for his actions. There was no mention of creating the fear and paranoia which fomented violence.

"For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Rep. Gabby Giffords said in an interview with MSNBC.

"Hang on, let me just tell you what I'm thinking. I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong? I stopped wearing my What Would Jesus Do band, and I've lost all sense of right and wrong now. I used to be able to say, "Yeah, I'd kill Michael Moore," and then I'd see the little band: What Would Jesus Do? And then I'd realize, Oh, you wouldn't kill Michael Moore. Or at least you wouldn't choke him to death." "And you know, well, I'm not sure. " Glenn Beck, before the Tucson massacre.

"We Christians would do well to adopt the Muslim strategy. When someone sues to remove the Ten Commandments from a public area, attack, beat and maybe even KILL them. When a federal appeals court rules that Christian Nativity Scenes in New York Schools can be banned while Jew Menorrah's [sic] a[nd] Muslim Crescents can remain in the same schools, the Judges on that court should be attacked, beaten and if necessary, KILLED."
— Hal Turner, Commentator, Website post attacking " JEW NEWSPAPERS," Feb. 6, 2006

"If this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies." Sharon Angle, failed Nevada candidate for representative and avid Tea Party member.

“It’s ok. Christina Taylor Green was probably going to end up a left wing bleeding heart liberal anyway. Hey, as ‘they’ say, what would you do if you had the chance to kill Hitler as a kid? Exactly.” Tweeted to Palin's Twitter account. Ms. Green, 9 years old, was killed during the shooting.

"We should do to the LIBERALS what Hitler did to the JEWS. Give them a chance to renounce LIBERALISM; if they do not, send them to the ovens. Tweeted to Palin'sTwitter account.

Patriotic Americans don't have to become dangerous psychotics like liberals, but they could at least act like men. Why hasn't the former spokesman for the Taliban matriculating at Yale been beaten even more senseless than he already is? According to Hollywood, this nation is a cauldron of ethnic hatreds positively brimming with violent skinheads. Where are the skinheads when you need them? What does a girl have to do to get an angry, club- and torch-wielding mob on its feet? Ann Coulter, Columnist.

Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade declared, "Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims." (My note-this is bunk with particular attention to Timothy McVeigh, a Caucasian American Christian militia member and Terry Nichols, Caucasian American Christian militia member who detonated a massive bomb at the Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which killed 168 people. Both were anti-government extremists.)

1. I am appalled shocked and disgusted by the senseless attack upon Rep. Gabby Giffords and nineteen others on January 8, 2001 resulting in six deaths. The uncivil level of discourse emanating primarily from republicans, conservatives, neo-conservatives and their counterpart talking heads the past few years has caused great concern. Few are taking responsibility for the violent vitriolic utterances with the primary defense being the individual, not the hostile environment caused this sad episode. This writer is of the opinion those who stirred the pot created fear and paranoia thus manufacturing an explosive national milieu. When the conservative movement's True Believers are fed a steady diet of extraordinary warnings intended to induce a paranoiac, panicked fear -- They're Destroying America! They Want to End Your Liberty! Health Care Reform is the End of America! and simultaneously a steady diatribe of suggestions the solution is simply to do away with them. They are, indeed, responsible for their words and violent acts are unfortunately validated by individuals through careless vitriolic utterances from unprofessional politicians and talking heads. Those in charge needed to have toned down the volatile rhetoric before inevitable consequences occurred. This is not meant to imply a direct link to the shooter, but means emphatically conservatives, talking heads and others created the explosive environment violence thrives upon.

The following has been paraphrased from an web article written by Brent Budowsky, in article entitled: Right-wing death threats rise: Republicans should condemn Rush Limbaugh. Just in the past two and a half years, here's the record of "isolated incidents" amassed so far (information has been added onto):

--July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how "liberals" are "destroying America," walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others. (My note-Adkisson's statement: "This was a symbolic killing. Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate & House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg's book. I'd like to kill everyone in the mainstream media. But I know those people were inaccessible to me. I couldn't get to the generals & high ranking officers of the Marxist movement so I went after the foot soldiers, the chickenshit liberals that vote in these traitorous people. Someone had to get the ball rolling. I volunteered. I hope others do the same. It's the only way we can rid America of this cancerous pestilence." (Note..Bernard Goldberg is a regular on Fox News Bill O'Reilly's Factor program).

--October 2008: Two neo-Nazis are arrested in Tennessee in a plot to murder dozens of African-Americans, culminating in the assassination of President Obama.

--December 2008: A pair of "Patriot" movement radicals -the father-son team of Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who wanted "to attack the political infrastructure" -- threaten a bank in Woodburn, Oregon, with a bomb in the hopes of extorting money that would end their financial difficulties, for which they blamed the government. Instead, the bomb goes off and kills two police officers. The men eventually are convicted and sentenced to death for the crime.

--December 2008: In Belfast, Maine, police discover the makings of a nuclear "dirty bomb" in the basement of a white supremacist shot dead by his wife. The man, who was independently wealthy, reportedly was agitated about the election of President Obama and was crafting a plan to set off the bomb.

--January 2009: A white supremacist named Keith Luke embarks on a killing rampage in Brockton, Mass., raping and wounding a black woman, killing her sister, then murdering a homeless man before being captured by police as he is enroute to a Jewish community center.

--February 2009: A Marine named Kody Brittingham is arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate President Obama. Brittingham also collected white-supremacist material.

--April 2009: A white supremacist named Richard Poplawski opens fire on three Pittsburgh police officers who come to his house on a domestic-violence call and kills all three, because he believed President Obama intended to take away the guns of white citizens like himself.Poplawski is currently awaiting trial.

--April 2009: Another gunman in Okaloosa County, Florida, similarly fearful of Obama's purported gun-grabbing plans, kills two deputies when they come to arrest him in a domestic-violence matter, then is killed himself in a shootout with police.

Gabrielle Giffords and a paranoid hatred of the government walks into a public Giffords event and shoots her in the head, then keeps firing, killing six people and wounding 14 more. Gifford miraculously survives.

--January 2011: A backpack bomb with the potential of killing or injuring dozens of people is found along the route of a Martin Luther King Day “unity march” in downtown Spokane.

So said Minnesota Republican Representative Michele Bachmann in response to to the January 8 mass killing in Tucson. But less than a year ago, Bachmann called for resistance to cap and trade legislation, "I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue," adding, "Thomas Jefferson told us, having a revolution every now and then is a good thing."

-A devoted Glenn Beck fan left a serious of death threats (Kill the fucking Senator!) on the voice mail at the office of Sen. Patty Murray.

2. Today, January 12, 2011, marked the President of the United States coming to Tucson. Mr. Obama visited recuperating victims at University Medical Center and then delivered a moving speech during a memorial service at McHale Center. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin posted an eight minute video on Facebook again portraying herself as a "victim.". Ms. Palin has been particularly volatile with hate filled messages since 2008. She portrayed herself as a victim of blood libel thus infuriating both Christians and Jews alike by using the phrase. Blood libel is a disparaging term used for centuries to identify a myth where Jews allegedly killed Christian children for their blood. Palin displayed her typical vindictive paranoia instead of respect for the dead being eulogized in a memorial attended by the President and other dignitaries, reflecting upon a national tragedy and consideration for the massive outpouring of support for victims and decedents alike. She is only thinking of herself while Gabby Giffords is fighting for life. Subsequently, Palin's basic values and hence, credibility must be questioned in length. Past problems within her family include a daughter, Willow, breaking and entering homes to party with other teenagers (note-Palin interceded resulting in only the boys being indicted; the girls walked away scot free!); homophobic slurs on Facebook uttered by both Willow and Bristol with only Bristol apologizing; Track, the eldest son, being arrested by police for vandalizing a school bus's brakes prompting him to enlist in the Army to avoid trial; and of course, Bristol having a child out of wedlock. Children are reflective of their parents and in this case, the sight is not very positive. Best for Sarah to be seen and not heard unless there is a desire for more light shined upon skeletons in her closet. Unfortunately, she must be regarded as an angry insecure person who lashes out at the slightest hint of criticism, whether true or not; greed indicated by leaving the governorship for more dollars; and a constant obsession to be in the public light regardless.

3. Anyone who adheres to the Republican Party should reconsider in light of GOP actually instituting death panels. The 9/11 responders were held in limbo by Republican Senators who bickered over the Responders Bill. Many of these brave souls are suffering from various diseases emanating from that day in September. Some are destitute from medical bills while others are counting the days until the Grim Reaper appears. Meanwhile, Republican Senators are turning their backs on them, i.e. particularly John McCain who is finally showing his true selfish colors. It is simply disgusting that Republicans are willing to play obstructionist games while brave souls are suffering unto death. The bill finally passed after $3 billion was cut by the GOP (Grand Obstructionist Party).

4. Another Republican death panel is active in Arizona where Guv Jan Brewer cut funds for AHCCCS, the AZ version of Medicaid. Guv zeroed in on transplants and other major surgeries describing them as "Cadillacs." Thus once again, good people are facing the specter of death simply due to an inability to obtain bone marrow replacement, heart transplants, etc.; a total cost of $5 million to provide. "Deer In The Headlights" feels these are unnecessary and is willing to let Arizonans die for the belief (three so far). It is utterly cruel, but Brewer has little compassion except for her misguided ideology. She hasn't made any cuts in the guv's office and could sell one of her two aircraft to cover the $5 million.

3. The Arizona Nationalist Socialist Party (Nazi) is patrolling the border to enhance security and show their colors. Undoubtedly, this made Sheriff Jimmy Arpaio happy since he enjoys having his picture taken with the group. Another public servant, AZ Senator Russell Pearce, enjoyed hobnobbing with the Nazis until it became a public relations risk, but this didn't stop him from soliciting far right input in the writing of SB 1070, the controversial immigration bill. Obviously, politics is more important than the millions who died in WWII fighting Hitler's adherents. My take....its shameful and shows a disrespect toward those Americans who paid the ultimate price during that conflict. Oh, J.T. Ready, the Arizona National Socialist leader, was court-martialed twice by the Marines while serving and then escorted quietly out their door with a bad conduct discharge. Somebody needs to box their ears and also, clue "Deer In The Headlights" Brewer about reality.  Arizona now has 16 hate groups with Tucson gaining a white nationalist group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Certainly not a notable achievement.  It's not a good year for those dedicated to true Republican principles and conservatism. Barry Goldwater would roll over in his grave.

Pearce is shown with J,T. Ready at a National Socialist rally in Phoenix.  Also present was Sheriff Joe Arpaio in support of Ready.  J.T. Ready was allegedly implicated in the murder of Mexican border crossers and later committed suicide after killing his girl friend, her daughter, daughter's boyfriend and their baby.  This is Arizona politics and the acceptance of an ideology so many Americans and Allies died fighting during World War II.

Mercedes AMG S 63 E Performance review: Absolute Power

Hanging onto the steering wheel for dear life while mumbling expletives is not what you imagine when you think of driving an S-Class. However, when it wears a ‘63’ badge, things are slightly different. More so when that badge gets red highlights, because that means the S-Class in question isn’t the usual, sophisticated, good boy, but its evil cousin. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-Performance is an 802hp limousine that is ready to rip a hole through time, and as its name suggests, it’s all about the performance. For once, the back seat takes a back seat in an S-Class.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 powertrain and performance

The S 63 is a plug-in hybrid gone rogue. It gets a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, putting out 612hp and 900Nm, but then a 13kWh battery and electric motor on the rear axle put out an additional 190hp and 320Nm, bringing the total output to a hysterical 802hp and 1,430Nm. Deploying 1,430Nm of torque to the tarmac is like putting Usain Bolt on your home treadmill. There is so much grip that it feels like the car is trying to stretch the road beneath it every time you put your foot down. As a result, despite its 2.5-tonne heft, it can go from 0 to 100kph in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250kph, but if you opt for the Driver’s Pack, you can remove the limiter and get it up to 290kph. Clearly, range is not the priority for this hybrid.

Beneath the skin lies some groundbreaking F1-inspired tech.

The numbers on the S 63 are intimidating, to say the least, and the experience from behind the wheel is, too. The car picks up the pace with zero lag, and you need to keep an eye on the speed readout; otherwise, it’s just a blur as you accelerate.

What helps bring this earth-shattering performance to the road are two transmissions. The engine uses a speedshift 9-speed MCT, and the motor gets its own 2-speed transmission, because it spins at a different RPM from the engine. First gear on the motor is good enough for up to 140kph and only after that does it switch to second for a smoother torque transition.

It will make you grin each time you find an empty stretch of road.

What you’ll be using most is the 9-speed with its paddle shifters. Needless to say, it is extremely responsive, and in Sport and Sport+, it’s extremely aggressive as well. When you push the car hard, shifts are immediate, and for total control, you can switch to ‘M’ or manual mode, where it will not upshift unless you tug at the right paddle. However, for everyday driving in the city, it isn’t the smoothest. There are noticeable jerks at low speeds, and even in Comfort mode, you’re constantly made aware of the massive power waiting to be unleashed. Then there is the exhaust, which, sadly, isn’t all-natural. A lot of it is fed through the speakers, and for the most part, you’ll barely hear it outside. Rev it high enough, though, and the V8 roar is very much there, along with pops and bangs that add to the drama.

We’ve seen this powertrain in the GT 63 S E-Performance, where it had even more power (834hp) but a smaller (6.7kWh) battery. The S 63’s larger 13kWh battery results in a higher claimed electric-only range of 33km.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 hybrid technology

The 13kWh battery pack uses Formula 1-derived tech and contains 1,200 individual cells that have a dedicated coolant line for thermal management. Not only is that better for packaging, but each cell can also be cooled individually, so you can push the car and not worry about overheating the battery. There are four recuperation modes—varying the level of regen—and you can charge the battery using a Type-2 port and the onboard 3.7kW AC charger.

3.7kW charger can top up the battery.

Exclusive to the S 63 is a ‘B’ or Battery Hold mode that helps preserve the SOC. This allows you to switch to the all-electric ‘EL’ mode in heavy traffic and save some precious high-octane fuel.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 ride and handline

Because this is an AMG S-Class, there are two contrasting ideologies at work—sportscar handling and luxurious ride comfort. If you want S-Class levels of soft and supple, this won’t do the trick. The ride is inherently firm, and although it gets adaptive air suspension, you will feel jitters in the cabin even in Comfort mode. It also gets active engine mounts, which help keep things composed, and once you find a winding ribbon of tarmac with long swooping bends, the AMG side of the dynamic package is really felt. That said, on our bad roads, the one thing that you absolutely have to be aware of is the low ground clearance. Sure, the air suspension has a raise function that helps you gain some crucial millimetres, but you still have to crab crawl over big speed bumps to avoid grazing the underbody.

Gets vehicle raise function, but speedbumps need to be tackled with care.

In terms of handling, you don’t really expect big things from an S-Class, but AMG’s pedigree clearly flows through this car’s veins. The 4Matic+ system, along with 3-degree rear-wheel steering, makes a huge difference in the bends as well as in U-turns and three-point turns. Despite having the same long 3,216mm wheelbase as the standard S-Class, in the corners, it is agile and sharp.

However, in seriously tight turns, its 2.5-tonne weight is what pulls it down, and at such points, all that handling tech can only do so much.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 design

In terms of design, there are many telltale signs of it being an AMG. Edition 1 gets the ‘Night Pack’ that replaces every inch of bling with blackened bits and the ‘Carbon Pack’ that adds racy carbon-fibre elements to the air dams, splitter, side sill, mirrors and diffuser. Apart from that, it gets sporty bumpers with huge air dams, the massive ‘Panamericana’ grille and an AMG logo in place of the Mercedes-Benz emblem. There are also 21-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres and carbon ceramic brakes (standard on the Edition 1).

Optional carbon-ceramic brakes are a must.

The rear, which many will find themselves looking at, features quad exhaust tips and red highlights for the badges, letting everyone know that this is an E-Performance and something that’s not to be trifled with.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 interior and features

On the inside, the S 63 prides itself on its AMG roots with a healthy dose of carbon fibre. The dashboard gets a carbon-fibre slab with a red weave within. The upper half also gets red stitching along with Nappa leather seats, which, though sporty, are superbly comfy as well. The new bit is the performance steering wheel that gives it full-blown AMG cred. Wrapped in Alcantara and leather, its plethora of touch buttons might seem intimidating at first, but it doesn’t take long to get used to. The steering also features context-sensitive AMG knobs that feature shortcuts to adjust the suspension, gearbox, drive modes and even the exhaust.

Interior feels like a high-end lounge that also doubles up as a gym. S63 is the only S-Class you’d want to pilot yourself.

Also new are racier themes for the instrument cluster and telemetry, such as engine temperature, motor and battery readouts, and performance timing. The massive touchscreen in the centre is the nerve centre of the whole car, controlling everything from the AC to the chassis, and it’s super responsive. But rest assured, the screen has plenty of displays and data to satisfy your inner nerd.

The rear seat may not be the best seat, given this is an AMG, but it’s always going to be special in an S-Class. You have plenty of room to stretch out, and all the bells and whistles like seat massaging, heating and ventilation, along with the ability to move the passenger seat ahead and fully stretch out.

Despite being a full-bore AMG, its rear seat offers the complete S-Class experience.

There is a superb Burmester 4D sound system, panoramic sunroof, incredibly comfy seats, rear entertainment screens, and even noise-cancelling headphones if the V8 is not sonorous enough for you. That said, with all that carbon fibre surrounding you and the grin on your chauffeur’s face, it won’t be long before you want to jump back into the driver’s seat. Also, since the S 63’s hybrid tech sits over the rear axle, the boot space is down to 310 litres, and you don’t get a spare wheel either.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 price

1,430Nm of torque means every flex on the accelerator feels like being in the first seat on a roller coaster.

The S 63 E-Performance is priced from Rs 3.3 crore onwards, and the ‘Edition 1’ seen here, of which only three have been imported to India (and sold out), is listed at Rs 3.8 crore. It has supercar levels of power and all the luxury elements, and it is loaded with tech. Yet you’d struggle to justify the purchase. If you want a fun-to-drive car with lots of power, there are better options, and if you want a luxury car, the S-Class is already mighty impressive. It is difficult to see the logic, but as soon as you drive it, there is something about it that invokes your inner child. It won’t win track events or get you any drag race trophies. You won’t have a plausible justification. If you are the sort who looks for plausibility, this is definitely not the car for you. It’s a laugh, and you buy it because you can. If they ask you why you bought it, it’ll only take a quick spin to get them an answer.
