Record low temperatures were set at several locations around the Pittsburgh metro area on May 9 as snow fell in Pennsylvania and other northeastern states, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the cold temperatures can be attributed to a polar vortex moving through the region, including parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. The National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office recorded temperatures in the low 30s, some going below freezing into the mid-to-high 20s, across the northeast. The polar vortex also brought cold and snow squalls to parts of Canada, according to reports. Much has been written and discussed over the last few months around our present social environment.

Much of the water supply in the Pacific Northwest originates in national forests. It sustains the region’s aquatic ecosystems, agriculture, hydroelectric power, and community water supplies.

Although burned trees are the most visible damage following a wildfire, a forest’s soil can also be damaged. The heat generated by a wildfire can alter the soil’s physical properties and kill the fungi and bacteria that are responsible for nutrient cycling and other ecosystem services. What isn’t well understood is the extent of the heating within the soil and how quickly the soil recovers.
