Q&A: How to talk about politics with people who don't agree with you

Girl Talk - Feed The Animals (Illegal Art)

I'm sure there's a huge cultural essay just waiting to be written (or perhaps someone has already tackled it and I haven't read it) on how the indie rock kids absolutely go ape shit for the music of Girl Talk, but for the most part shy away from hip hop and rap music in general by itself. Perhaps it's because Greg Gillis simply recontextualizes the music itself by slamming it up alongside so many other styles that it simply becomes impossible to place into any sort of genre. One could call it a mash-up, but Gillis goes far beyond just about anyone else I've heard doing this sort of thing, to the point where a mind-boggling amount of song samples (averaging about 10 or more per minute of song) makes the head spin. For reference, a Wikipedia article thoroughly lists everything.

Making Webpages Talk with the Listen to Page Feature on iOS

In this episode, Thomas Domville explores the ‘Listen to Page’ feature on iOS 17. This feature allows your device to read aloud the content of a webpage, making it an excellent tool for multitaskers who want to consume text content while on the move.

To use the feature, ensure that your device is updated to iOS 17 and launch Safari. Visit the desired webpage and locate the Page Settings icon at the bottom left of the webpage. Tap it and select ‘Listen to Page’ to start the narration. To pause, tap the Page Settings icon again and choose ‘Pause Listening’. When you’re ready to continue, tap the Page Settings icon and select ‘Resume Listening’.

Please note that ‘Listen to Page’ may not support webpages with interactive features or minimal text. However, if a webpage supports Reader mode, it’s likely to support ‘Listen to Page’ as well. The feature remembers where you left off, so you can resume listening from the same spot. You can also customize the voice of the spoken audio in your iOS settings at any time.

Many retailers offer 'returnless refunds.' Just don't expect them to talk much about it

Returnless refunds are a tool that more retailers are using to keep online shoppers happy and to reduce shipping fees, processing time and other ballooning costs from returned products. Companies such as Amazon, Walmart and Target have decided some items are not worth the cost or hassle of getting back. Think a $20 T-shirt that might cost $30 in shipping and handling to recover.

By jessamyn in "Calmer Vibes Chill Thread." on MetaTalk

The woman who I worked with as Justice of the Peace, who won by five votes last time (2 years ago) was a problem, believed in a lot of conspiracy theory stuff and was a time-waster being very vocal about it at our abatement and civil authority meetings. I was also on the ballot this year (and won handily) but I told people that i didn't care who they voted for as long as it was NOT HER and she lost and in the very small pond of my town's abatement and civil authority boards, things will go much more smoothly.

Also I made kid ballots and had two contests: dragon vs unicorn (a tie, with one write-in for "pegasis") and winter vs summer (winter won handily) and kids seemed to enjoy that and the "future voter" stickers we gave them.

Walking The Talk: What Does It Mean When Companies Say #BlackLivesMatter?

While the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Sandra Bland galvanized the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the killings of Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery have forced America to reckon with centuries of racial injustice and police brutality in unprecedented ways. Not only have protests demanding change been widespread, but major corporations — which, until now, have been largely silent and hesitant to embrace Black Lives Matter — are pledging to fight racial injustice and declaring their support of the nearly seven-year-old movement.

Susan Rice Talks Of Balancing Career And Motherhood, Reflects On Benghazi

Looking back at more than 25 years in public service, Susan Rice — former U.N. ambassador for the United States and national security adviser to President Barack Obama — describes much of her career as a balancing act. Sometimes, that meant toeing the line between her personal and professional life. "My now 22-year-old son, in fact, learned to walk in the halls of the State Department," recalls Rice in an interview with NPR. "And there were those who thought that was a little bit inappropriate for the staid halls of the State Department." But luckily, she says, she had the support of then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Other times, Rice had to balance her ambition with her identity as a person of color: At the age of 28, having just started her career in government, Rice turned down a position working on African policy for the Clinton administration out of fear of pigeonholing herself. She worried "this predominantly white national security establishment would see [her] as
