bal Global air quality to worsen significantly under ‘business as usual’ human activity By Published On :: Mon, 12 Nov 2012 11:57:45 GMT Global air quality will significantly deteriorate by 2050 unless further steps are taken to cut current emissions from human activities, according to recent research. Most people around the world will be affected by worsening air quality with hotspots of particularly poor air occurring in China, northern India and the Middle East. Full Article
bal Black carbon pollution from megacities and effects on global air quality By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 13 Feb 2014 9:23:19 GMT Air pollution from the world’s megacities not only has local impacts, but can spread to remote regions of the world. Recent research has highlighted, for example, that megacities are a source of black carbon pollution in lowest kilometre of atmosphere in the Arctic, with European megacities contributing more than others. bal Regional air pollution improvements have global health benefits By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 04 Dec 2014 9:23:19 GMT Reductions in emissions of fine particle air pollution can prevent premature deaths, not just locally, but also in countries thousands of kilometres away, new research illustrates. The transcontinental study examines the effects of reducing air pollution emitted from Europe, North America, South and East Asia by 20% and shows that, for example, reductions in the EU would mean 3700 fewer premature deaths in the other three regions every year. bal East Asian air pollution to have bigger global impact under climate change By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 29 Jan 2015 9:23:19 GMT Greater amounts of air pollutants emitted in East Asia will move around the globe under climate change, a recent study predicts. Changes to wind speeds and air pressure will mean that movement of pollution from this region is enhanced under a changing climate. These results highlight the need for globally coordinated efforts to tackle air pollution and climate change. Full Article

bal Reducing global particulate matter pollution could save millions of lives By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 17 September 2015 9:12:34 GMT Globally, more than 3.2 million premature deaths per year are attributed to exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5). A new study estimates that 2.1 million premature deaths could be avoided if countries achieved the WHO guideline for PM2.5. Even meeting their closest WHO interim concentration targets could avoid 750 000 (23%) deaths attributed to PM2.5 per year. Full Article
bal PAH levels in Arctic air remain steady despite decreasing global emissions By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 28 November 2019 11:23:19 GMT Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) enter the environment in large quantities via the combustion of fossil fuels and organic matter. They are a cause for concern given their known toxicity, potential to cause cancer and ability to move large distances in the atmosphere — meaning that they are found in remote or protected areas, such as the Arctic, even if not emitted there. This study explores how PAH levels in the Arctic atmosphere have changed over the past 20 years at three sites in Canada, Norway and Finland. The results show that, despite a global decrease in PAH emissions in the same timeframe, the air concentrations in the Arctic are not significantly declining — possibly partly as a result of local warming causing more volatile PAHs to move from the surface to the air.
