Method for fabricating group-III nitride semiconductor laser device

A method for fabricating a group-III nitride semiconductor laser device stably supplies laser cavity mirrors having a low lasing threshold current through the use of a semi-polar plane. A blade 5g is forced down through a first region ER1 to keep the first region ER1 squeezed between a support member H2 and a movable member H1 together with a part of a protective sheet TF in contact with the first region ER1 while the tension generated in the area of the protective sheet TF in contact with the first region ER1 with the movable member H1 increases until the semi-polar principal surface SF at an end face EG1 of the first region ER1 tilts by a deflection angle THETA from the semi-polar principal surface SF of a second region ER2, and a force is thereby generated in the first region ER1 in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the blade 5g toward the first region ER1. For example, an angle ALPHA is within the range of 71 degrees to 79 degrees, and the deflection angle THETA is within the range of 11 to 19.

Inductrack III configuration—a maglev system for high loads

Inductrack III configurations are suited for use in transporting heavy freight loads. Inductrack III addresses a problem associated with the cantilevered track of the Inductrack II configuration. The use of a cantilevered track could present mechanical design problems in attempting to achieve a strong enough track system such that it would be capable of supporting very heavy loads. In Inductrack III, the levitating portion of the track can be supported uniformly from below, as the levitating Halbach array used on the moving vehicle is a single-sided one, thus does not require the cantilevered track as employed in Inductrack II.

0x62: Can Anyone Live in Full Software Freedom Today? (Part III)

Bradley and Karen have the last pre-talk installment of discussing the preparation for their joint keynote at FOSDEM 2019, entitled: Can Anyone Live in Full Software Freedom Today?: Confessions of Activists Who Try But Fail to Avoid Proprietary Software. This episode is the third of three episodes where Bradley and Karen record their preparation conversations for this keynote address. In this particular episode, they discuss the issue of letting others use proprietary software on your behalf, the problem of relying too much on that, and then finish up discussing with how they'll include this material into the final talk.

Show Notes:

Segment 0 (00:34)

  • Karen discussed the idea of a shabbos goy, and the analogy between that and allowing other people use proprietary on your behalf. (02:58)
  • Bradley and Karen discussed that it is equally abhorrent to ask someone else to use proprietary software for you as it is to use yourself, since someone's software freedom is compromised in any event (06:58)
  • Bradley mentioned that he had previously applied to serve on the USA's Internal Revenue Service (IRS)'s Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC). Bradley mentioned how sadly the IRS typically accepts people from proprietary software companies like Intuit but has to his knowledge never accepted anyone involved in FOSS software for IRS form preparation (10:02)
  • Bradley mentioned the Free Software PDF fill-in tools evince and flpsed (12:24)
  • Karen stated that Conservancy's policy is that: We care so much about software freedom that we would rather use proprietary software than have someone else lose their software freedom. (15:20)
  • Karen mentioned that her Linux Conf Australia 2019, Right to Not Broadcast, which you can view online. (22:18)

Segment 1 (23:15)

Let's Play Final Fantasy III, part 1

Let's Play Final Fantasy III, part 2

Final Fantasy III Review

Final Fantasy VIII is painfully stupid

Why tug our forelocks to Richard III, a king who’s such a diva that he needs two funerals?

For somebody who did less for Britain than, say, Olly Murs, we’re making a dreadful fuss of our late monarch

Who’s your favourite dead king? For me it’s a toss-up between King Henry VIII (likes: Greensleeves, beheadings) and Nat King Cole (likes: chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose). Those are definitely my top two.

Below them, there’s King Kong, King George III, Good King Wenceslas, and about 500 other assorted types of king before you get to Richard III. Never warmed to him. Don’t know why. I’ve just never really been into Richard III. Maybe it’s his Savile-esque haircut, or the fact that his name is widely used as rhyming slang for fecal matter, or just the way he’s routinely depicted as a murderous, scheming cross between Mr Punch and Quasimodo; a panto villain with nephews’ blood on his hands.
