The smog that has engulfed large swathes of Northern India has effectively brought the Northern Indian Railways to a standstill

Witnessing delays and cancellations due to the heavy smog that has descended over large parts of North India, several long-distance trains reaching stations such as New Delhi, Chandigarh and Lucknow and others have been held up by more than twelve hours. This disruption has caused several problems, many people have been stranded, unable to get to their workplaces on time, while others have been seen lying on the platform.

According to the Northern Railways, over 25 trains were delayed in the Ambala division on Thursday. The morning Shatabdi, operating between Chandigarh and Delhi, was delayed by three hours and failed to reach at the scheduled time. “The trains are running late due to smog in Delhi and other parts of the northern states. On Thursday as well several trains were delayed. We don’t see any change in the coming days. The situation will improve only if the smoggy weather ends,” said an official to news agencies.

Several trains have been cancelled as well, which include: The Ajmer-Jammu Tavi Express, New Delhi-Amritsar Express, Allahabad-Saharanpur Express, Amritsar-Jai Nagar express, Malda-Delhi Farakka Express, Poorvottar Express from Amritsar to Silchar and Pooja Express from Jammu to Ajmer.

Structure of the 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrodipicolinate synthase from the thermoacidophilic methanotroph Methylacidiphilum fumariolicum SolV and the phylogeny of the aminotransferase pathway

The enzyme 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrodipicolinate synthase (DapA) is involved in the production of lysine and precursor molecules for peptidoglycan synthesis. In a multistep reaction, DapA converts pyruvate and l-aspartate-4-semialdehyde to 4-hydroxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydrodipicolinic acid. In many organisms, lysine binds allosterically to DapA, causing negative feedback, thus making the enzyme an important regulatory component of the pathway. Here, the 2.1 Å resolution crystal structure of DapA from the thermoacidophilic methanotroph Methylacidiphilum fumariolicum SolV is reported. The enzyme crystallized as a contaminant of a protein preparation from native biomass. Genome analysis reveals that M. fumariolicum SolV utilizes the recently discovered aminotransferase pathway for lysine biosynthesis. Phylogenetic analyses of the genes involved in this pathway shed new light on the distribution of this pathway across the three domains of life.

The synthesis and structural characterization of the mol­ecular compound (μ3-benzene-1,2-di­thiol­ato)hexa­carbonyl­bis­(μ3-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene-2,3-dithiolato)tricobaltmolybdenum, [Co3Mo(C4F6S2)2(C6H4S2)(CO)6] or Mo(tfd)2(bdt)(Co(CO)2)3 (tfd is 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene-2,3-dithiolate and bdt is benzene-1,2-di­thiol­ate), are reported. The structure of the mol­ecule contains the molybdenum tris­(di­thiol­ene) complex Mo(tfd)2(bdt) coordinated as a multidentate ligand to three cobalt dicarbonyl units. Each of the three cobalt centers is relatively close to molybdenum, with Co⋯Mo distances of 2.7224 (7), 2.8058 (7), and 2.6320 (6) Å. Additionally, each of the cobalt centers is bound via main-group donor atoms, but each one in a different way: the first cobalt atom is coordinated by two sulfur atoms from different di­thiol­enes (bdt and tfd). The second cobalt atom is coordinated by one sulfur from one tfd and two olefinic carbons from another tfd. The third cobalt is coordinated by one sulfur from bdt and two sulfurs from tfd. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first structurally characterized example of a molybdenum (tris­)di­thiol­ene complex that coordinates to cobalt. The F atoms of two of the –CF3 groups were refined as disordered over two sets of sites with ratios of refined occupancies of 0.703 (7):0.297 (7) and 0.72 (2):0.28 (2).

Functionalized 3-(5-ar­yloxy-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1-(4-substituted-phen­yl)prop-2-en-1-ones: synthetic pathway, and the structures of six examples

Five examples each of 3-(5-ar­yloxy-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1-[4-(prop-2-yn-1-yl­oxy)phen­yl]prop-2-en-1-ones and the corresponding 1-(4-azido­phen­yl)-3-(5-ar­yloxy-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)prop-2-en-1-ones have been synthesized in a highly efficient manner, starting from a common source precursor, and structures have been determined for three examples of each type. In each of 3-[5-(2-chloro­phen­oxy)-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]-1-[4-(prop-2-yn-1-yl­oxy)phen­yl]prop-2-en-1-one, C28H21ClN2O3, (Ib), the isomeric 3-[5-(2-chloro­phen­oxy)-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]-1-[4-(prop-2-yn-1-yl­oxy)phen­yl]prop-2-en-1-one, (Ic), and 3-[3-methyl-5-(naphthalen-2-yl­oxy)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]-1-[4-(prop-2-yn­yloxy)phen­yl]prop-2-en-1-one, C32H24N2O3, (Ie), the mol­ecules are linked into chains of rings, formed by two independent C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds in (Ib) and by a combination of C—H⋯O and C—H⋯π(arene) hydrogen bonds in each of (Ic) and (Ie). There are no direction-specific inter­molecular inter­actions in the structure of 1-(4-azido­phen­yl)-3-[3-methyl-5-(2-methyl­phen­oxy)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]prop-2-en-1-one, C26H21N5O2, (IIa). In 1-(4-azido­phen­yl)-3-[5-(2,4-di­chloro­phen­oxy)-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]prop-2-en-1-one, C25H17Cl2N5O2, (IId), the di­chloro­phenyl group is disordered over two sets of atomic sites having occupancies 0.55 (4) and 0.45 (4), and the mol­ecules are linked by a single C—H⋯O hydrogen bond to form cyclic, centrosymmetric R22(20) dimers. Similar dimers are formed in 1-(4-azido­phen­yl)-3-[3-methyl-5-(naphthalen-2-yl­oxy)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]prop-2-en-1-one, C29H21N5O2, (IIe), but here the dimers are linked into a chain of rings by two independent C—H..π(arene) hydrogen bonds. Comparisons are made between the mol­ecular conformations within both series of compounds.

Ligand pathways in neuroglobin revealed by low-temperature photodissociation and docking experiments

A combined biophysical approach was applied to map gas-docking sites within murine neuroglobin (Ngb), revealing snapshots of events that might govern activity and dynamics in this unique hexacoordinate globin, which is most likely to be involved in gas-sensing in the central nervous system and for which a precise mechanism of action remains to be elucidated. The application of UV–visible microspectroscopy in crystallo, solution X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments at 15–40 K provided the structural characterization of an Ngb photolytic intermediate by cryo-trapping and allowed direct observation of the relocation of carbon monoxide within the distal heme pocket after photodissociation. Moreover, X-ray diffraction at 100 K under a high pressure of dioxygen, a physiological ligand of Ngb, unravelled the existence of a storage site for O2 in Ngb which coincides with Xe-III, a previously described docking site for xenon or krypton. Notably, no other secondary sites were observed under our experimental conditions.

Probing the structural pathway of conformational polymorph nucleation by comparing a series of α,ω-alkanedicarboxylic acids

Herein the nucleation pathway of conformational polymorphs was revealed by studying the relationships and distinctions among a series of α,ω-alkanedicarboxylic acids [HOOC–(CH2)n−2–COOH, named DAn, where n = 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15] in the solid state and in solution. Their polymorphic outcomes, with the exception of DA5, show solvent dependence: form I with conformation I crystallizes from solvents with hydrogen-bond donating (HBD) ability, whereas form II with conformation II crystallizes preferentially from solvents with no HBD ability. In contrast, form II of DA5 does not crystallize in any of the solvents used. Quantum mechanical computation showed that there is no direct conformational link between the solvents and the resultant polymorphic outcomes. Surprisingly, solute aggregates were found in no-HBD solvents by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and only monomers could be detected in HBD solvents, suggesting stronger solvation. Furthermore, it was found that all six compounds including DA5 followed the same pattern in solution. Moreover, crystal-packing efficiency calculations and stability tests stated that dimorphs of DA5 bear a greater stability difference than others. These suggest that the rearrangement from conformation II to I could not be limited by hard desolvation in HBD solvents, where form I was also obtained. In other systems, metastable II was produced in the same solvents, probably as a result of the rearrangement being limited by hard desolvation. In this work, a comparative study uncovers the proposed nucleation pathway: difficulty in desolvation has a remarkable effect on the result of rearrangement and nucleation outcome.
