SUPERCONDUCTING NANOWIRE AVALANCHE PHOTODETECTORS WITH REDUCED CURRENT CROWDING

Superconducting nanowire avalanche photodetectors (SNAPs) have using meandering nanowires to detect incident photons. When a superconducting nanowire absorbs a photon, it switches from a superconducting state to a resistive state, producing a change in voltage that can be measured across the nanowire. A SNAP may include multiple nanowires in order to increase the fill factor of the SNAP's active area and the SNAP's detection efficiency. But using multiple meandering nanowires to achieve high fill-factor in SNAPs can lead to current crowding at bends in the nanowires. This current crowding degrades SNAP performance by decreasing the switching current, which the current at which the nanowire transitions from a superconducting state to a resistive state. Fortunately, staggering the bends in the nanowires reduces current crowding, increasing the nanowire switching current, which in turn increases the SNAP dynamic range.

This I Believe: I Believe In Good Parenting

I believe in good parenting. Since before I can remember, my cousin, Chase, has lived with my family. Our birthdays are twelve days apart and we have always been inseparable. We went to school together, had joint birthday parties, and basically lived our lives as twins. Although his last name isn’t Fleece, he did not know a life apart from me and my siblings. Chase’s mom had not particularly lived in a way that valued Chase or his brother, Brandon. She had them at a very young age and their dad was not in the picture. She was not sober and needed a little bit of help to get her back on her feet. Brandon, who lived with his mother, got in trouble constantly. He did not receive discipline or consequences, so he continued to misbehave. My mom stepped in when Chase was born to make sure he would get off on the right foot and to give his mom some time and space to sober up. Brandon is now living life in and out of jail and on drugs. Chase is now playing hockey in college and working two

2 Mortgages, No Income: Sell The House Or Rent It Out, An Airbnb Host Wonders

6 Ways College Might Look Different In The Fall

What will happen on college campuses in the fall? It's a big question for families, students and the schools themselves. A lot of what happens depends on factors outside the control of individual schools: Will there be more testing? Contact tracing? Enough physical space for distancing? Will the coronavirus have a second wave? Will any given state allow campuses to reopen? For all of these questions, it's really too early to know the answers. But one thing is clear: Life, and learning for the nation's 20 million students in higher education, will be different. "I don't think there's any scenario under which it's business as usual on American college campuses in the fall," says Nicholas Christakis, a sociologist and physician at Yale University. So why are so many colleges announcing they will be back on campus in the fall? In many cases, it's because they're still trying to woo students. A survey of college presidents found their most pressing concern right now is summer and fall

Episode 0x1D: Stefano Zacchiroli, Current DPL

Karen interviews Stefano Zacchiroli, who is the current Debian Project Leader. Karen and Bradley discuss their thoughts on that interview.

Show Notes:

Segment 0 (00:36)

Segment 1 (03:58)

  • Stefano was inspired by a professor at his university to get involved with Free Software, because you can study the sources. (04:50)
  • DPL reelection is in April each year. (08:40)
  • Stefano discovered that some Debian derivatives weren't distributing source packages. He's helped them get into compliance, although Stefano hesitates to call it enforcement. (12:40)
  • Stefano mentioned that many Debian contributors begin contributing upstream to Debian after contributing to derivatives of Debian first. (15:20)
  • Stefano thinks the adoption of Free Software on the desktop is shrinking, and many users are using proprietary software “cloud” services. (19:00)
  • Stefano thinks that GPL is not enough to defend our software freedom, and that AGPL can do it but it came a bit late. (20:20)
  • Stefano is concerned about companies like Google that can reimplement an entire software system merely to avoid copyleft. (20:40)

Segment 2 (21:04)

  • Bradley mentioned that moving a package to non-free is a powerful tool that Debian has to deal with licensing situations (21:40)
  • Bradley noted that the Debian ftpmasters make decisions about licensing, but it has not been historically well documented. It seems that fact is now well documented. (27:30)
