our Matterport for iPhone App Lets You 3D Capture Your Space By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Matterport has updated their Capture app so that you can now "3D scan" spaces using the built-in camera on your iPhone or iPad. Meaning you take a bunch of photos, and the software stitches it together. Now that everyone's cooped up at home, I can see tons of people wanting to capture their houses for fun……and the app lets you measure, tag items and label spaces too. The only thing I don't like: You have to upload everything to the cloud, which is where the stitching-together part happens. It darn sure better be hack-proof--it's bad enough we've spent the past few years bugging our own homes with smart speakers, now it's like we're creating maps for tech-savvy burglars. Full Article
our Hands-Free, Reusable Shoe Covers that Automatically Wrap Around Your Feet When You Step On Them By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: For tradespeople, farmers and others who frequently need to cover and uncover their shoes (to protect interior surfaces from mud or worse), disposable booties are an unsustainable solution. They're also a pain to take on and off. This reusable and automatically-wrapping design seems much better:I've been searching for something like this for a long time. On our free-range farm, I inevitably step in the shit of some animal on a daily basis, and pulling my boots off and on every time I need to go back inside to retrieve something gets old. However, these wouldn't 100% work for my application. While getting them on looks easy, getting them off requires a fair amount of manual manipulation……meaning every time I removed these, I'd wind up with animal feces on my hands.Question for you: How do you reckon these work? I figure inside the fabric is a polypropylene sheet molded into a sprung shape, with raised tunnel-like seams serving as hinges, and when you collapse the tunnels by stepping on them, the spring action is released. [Edit: I believe reader Kyle Lamson has figured it out. See his comment below.](Lastly, I was not able to find what company or designer invented these. There are tons of variants on the market. It's possible they were invented by a fellow named Joel Fersaci, whose Step in Sock model is featured in the video above.) Full Article Sneakers|Sneakers

our Ask yourself these questions to decide if it's safe to visit your mom on Mother's Day By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 11:00:00 -0400 GagliardiPhotography/Shutterstock As spring passes by under lockdown, many Americans are wondering if it's safe to visit their mom for Mother's Day this year. Claudia Finkelstein, a doctor and associate professor of family medicine at Michigan State University, says that if either you or your parent have a chronic illness, are over the age of 65, or live in an urban area, it's unwise to plan an in-person visit. If you are able to visit your mother, however, try to meet outdoors and avoid physical contact — which may be challenging if you have children. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. As a physician, mother, daughter, and socially responsible human, I'm finding Mother's Day to be complicated for me this year, as it is for millions. Questions of whether and how to see my adult children and my own elderly mother present medical and ethical quandaries. As an associate professor of family medicine with a focus on wellness, as Mother's Day approaches, I'd like to share with you my thinking about this using some tools to aid discernment. Wouldn't it be great if choosing time with parents or offspring were ever an easy decision to make? However, the answer is rarely that simple. This year, in the midst of a global pandemic and the need to continue to practice social distancing, the decision is even more complex than usual.See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: A cleaning expert reveals her 3-step method for cleaning your entire home quicklySee Also:Scott Galloway: Amazon can and should offer all of its Prime members COVID-19 testing 'at a scale and efficiency that makes America feel like South Korea — competent'14 countries that are paying their workers during quarantine — and how they compare to America's $1,200 stimulus checksThis is the most common zodiac sign among the world's richest billionairesSEE ALSO: 5 ways for parents to motivate their kids and avoid tantrums at home during the coronavirus, according to a parenting expert READ MORE: There's such a thing as having a 'social allergy' to someone you dislike. our 372- The Help-Yourself City By 99percentinvisible.org Published On :: Tue, 01 Oct 2019 22:06:18 -0000 There’s an idea in city planning called “informal urbanism.” Some people call it “do-it-yourself urbanism.” Informal urbanism covers all the ways people try to change their community that isn’t through city planning or some kind of official process. If you’ve put up a homemade sign warning people not to sit on a broken bench, that’s DIY urbanism. If you’ve used cones or a chair to reserve your own parking spot on a public street, that’s also DIY urbanism. Gordon Douglas has written a whole book about this idea called “The Help Yourself City.” It looks at all the ways people are taking matters into their own hands. Both for good reasons and for incredibly selfish ones. The Help-Yourself City Full Article DIY activism design informal park parklets tactical urbanism
