???? A Q&A with…
Luca Ferrari
Postgres community organizer, author, adjunct professor, and open source advocate.

Luca Ferrari has had a huge impact on the Postgres community in Italy, having been president of the Italian PostgreSQL Users Group in the past and having helped to organize the popular PGDay.it events. He also blogs frequently about Postgres and wrote PostgreSQL 11 Server Side Programming Quick Start Guide for Packt.

Note: A more complete version of this interview is on the Web.

We caught up with him to ask about server side Postgres use cases in particular:

For those who use Postgres as a simple database and haven't touched the deeper elements, where do you think they should start?

There's no single answer to this question, since Postgres is such a huge project with so many features and a rich community. I never found a project where it cannot fit in. Postgres is somehow like Unix: you cannot touch it as "just a database", you need to commit to its culture to benefit the most out of it.

In my classes, I can see that people usually get fascinated by the capabilities of doing server side programming, and that is why I decided to write my book about this topic. Often, people do not expect to be able to embed their Perl, Java, or Python libraries directly into PostgreSQL without having to rewrite their business logic in an SQL-like language.

Another great feature nowdays is the support to JSON within the database, thanks to which PostgreSQL can be used as both a relational database and a 'NoSQL' storage engine, providing a lot of flexibility in your infrastructure.

One suggestion I always gave is to join the mailing lists: there are several that differ by topic and amount of traffic. Most are very active and have high quality contributors that take care in providing accuate replies to users' questions, that spend time in reproducing errors and edge-cases, and who will help you. That's a mandatory place where you have to start, in my opinion, to better learn about the project, its features and its culture.

Where should the line be drawn between doing things in an external programming language versus within Postgres?

Often the right choice is to place business logic near the data it refers to, that is within the database itself. However, there are several things to take into account including the developer's experience and the expressiveness of SQL-derived languages like pl/PgSQL.

There's a habit of letting ORMs (Object Relational Mappers) do most of the database interaction nowadays, reducing the database to a "simple storage". Of course, databases can do a lot more, and PostgreSQL in particular can help you migrate and embed your own business logic into the database itself.

I have helped a few companies embed their own Java libraries into Postgres resulting in a more robust and coherent way to access the data (the real value) without any regard of the application they were using. Because once you start having data, you will soon find that such data is required by multiple applications in different technologies and on different platforms, so that implementing the same business logic rules over and over becomes a huge effort; on the other hand, moving such logic within the database simplifies and keep uniform the way your data is manipulated.

What one thing do you think people should learn?

Stored procedures. They serve as a common base for triggers and are very similar to routines, therefore allowing you to build more complex pieces into your own cluster. Once you have learnt the common way of defining functions, you can go deeper and write your own native functions using other languages (e.g. C). This is more complex, but thanks to the extensibility of Postgres is not an impossible task and can help you migrating more and more code into the database. Once you have created a new feature, please do contribute it back so that other people can use it!

...

Last, allow me to announce that I'm working on another book right now: me and a friend of mine are writing a more general book on Postgres that will try to answer your question by leading the reader through the main features that make Postgres unique and great.

Be sure to check out Luca's book PostgreSQL 11 Server Side Programming Quick Start Guide to learn more about the topics covered in this interview. You can also find the code from the book in this GitHub repo.

Not so sweet! Gajar ka halwa lands 100 guests at wedding in hospitals

Several wedding guests, including children, fell ill after lunch

Gajar ka halwa made for a bitter end to a wedding in Kelwa on Sunday, after 175 guests fell violently ill. All those admitted to hospital for food poisoning were discharged the same night after treatment. Ironically, the food had been supplied by none other than the father of the bride, who is a local caterer.

A sample of the wedding buffet has been sent to the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) to find the cause behind the mass food poisoning. Action will be taken based on the FDA’s report, said the police.

More than 700 people had attended the wedding, which featured a vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian menu. Around 1 pm, some people started feeling giddy, and complained of stomach ache. Many also started vomiting after lunch. Around 175 people were taken to Safale Primary Health Centre. "There was  chaos, as nobody understood what was happening. The entire health centre was filled with patients," said a cop from Kelwa police station.

"The situation eventually settled down after a couple of hours, when the patients started feeling better," he added.

Why Mumbai couples are heading to SGNP and Vasai fort for pre-wedding shoots

Cadbury Junction

The picturesque canopies and gentle streams of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) attract not just birds, butterflies and bees, but shutterbugs and couples as well.

Our neighbourhood national park in Borivli has emerged as one of the go to destinations for pre-wedding photoshoots, says Ahmed Anwar, Director and Chief Conservator of Forest (CFO), SGNP. He says, "I can clearly see the increase in the pre-wedding as well as maternity photoshoot in SGNP since last year. What I can gather from this is that youngsters love to picture their memories with greenery." Call it a trend or a tradition, but the pre-wedding photoshoot, replete with wardrobe changes and high-end photo-editing, is part of modern wedding arrangements.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park and inset (Darshan Ambre)

While couples often venture out of the city to local or exotic destinations — say, a vineyard in Nashik or Koh Samui — SGNP's green acres or Ballard Estate are preferred, too. This is especially true for those couples who want to spend about Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 a day— a starting range for pre-wedding photoshoots, making them selective about the destination for their shoots. Other locations that are sought out, say photographers and couples, are the stairs of Asiatic Library in Fort, Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai, Utsav Chowk in Kharghar and forts, such as those in Sion, Worli and Vasai.

Vasai Fort and inset (Tejas Chachad)

Sanket Sawant, a wedding photographer from Thane says, "Couples come ready with ideas about the locations. Their first
choice, very often, turns out to be SGNP. Other places they like to head to are Upvan and Cadbury Bridge in Thane." Couples can getthe permission at SGNP after they pay fixed amount of R3,300. Photography is allowed in a 5 km area that is
accessible for visitors. Security concerns restrict people from venturing further into the core forested areas. Early monsoon and post monsoon, up until winter, is the best time to shoot at SGNP, say photographers.

However, instead of the wilderness offered by SGNP, should couples choose to opt for sunset-lit beaches, there is a problem,
say photographers. Professional photography is not allowed on Juhu Beach and Girgaum Chowpatty specifically for prewedding
shoots. If one wants to shoot there, permission from the civic body has to be taken, which takes time. Therefore, many photographers don’t choose these locations. Vasai Fort, a structure erected in the year 1184, has remained an attraction
for decades, not just for Bollywood, but also couples seeking to replicate a Bollywood moment. What's more attractive, unlike SGNP, is that there is no fees to shoot inside the fort. However, the bigger hurdle is dealing with crowds and local residents that gather around the posing couple.

Photographers say that rather than head there on weekends, make use of the busy weekdays, when the fort is empty. Sagar Mahadik, who has been working as a wedding photographer for the last four years, says, “Many people demand locations with a lot of greenery and seclusion, which SGNP offers. For that matter, Ballard Eastate roads are very much empty on weekends. If a couple is ready to go out of Mumbai, then the ShivTemple atAmbernath, Palava City in Dombivli are also secluded favourites.”

Ambre says that even if SGNP gets crowded during the wedding season, the good news is that photographers cooperate
with each other.

Go-to make-up guide for summer wedding

A hot and humid climate is not your make-up's best friend. To prevent it from melting and make it last longer, stay away from liquid or cream bronzers and invest in good powder eyeshadows, suggest experts.

Annanya Sabarwal, Country Head at Kiko Milano India and Davinder Kaur, make-up expert at MyGlamm, have listed tips for a tension free time at a summer wedding:

Cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser and rub ice wrapped in a clean cotton cloth, all over your face. It refreshes and hydrates the skin. Follow with a moisturiser as per your skin type.

Opt for an oil-free primer before applying make-up as it helps it last longer and holds your make-up up through any condition. If you use foundation, apply an oil-free formula with a foundation brush. After you've applied your liquid foundation, powder your face with a small brush.

Take caution with bronzers. Stay away from liquid or cream bronzers, as they will not hold up in the heat; try a matte powder instead.

If your eyelids are extra oily, apply a mattifying product first, as it gives a perfect finish to any texture of eye shadows and makes it stay longer without creasing the eyeshadow. Stick to powder eyeshadows over creamy formulas.

As for liners, waterproof liquid liner is the best idea.

A waterproof mascara is a must for every bride, especially for a summer one.

Opt for soft, powdery formula over cream blush that will look fresh and absorb oil. For more staying power, apply cheek stain, then dust a matching powder blush on top of it.

Complete your look with a matte lipstick in coral, peach and pink colours. Before you do that, start off by using a good lip scrub and then moisturise your lips with balm so your pencil will glide along easily. Take your lip pencil on your entire lips as this will prevent your lipstick from bleeding and supply more holding power. Cover your lips with the lipstick once the base is set.

Make sure to use a fixing spray. If you don't have one, rose water is a good substitute too.

Do not to forget to carry a kit for quick touch ups, it should include a compact, a lipstick, powder-free blotting papers to remove shine, and a small tube of concealer with a tiny synthetic brush for quick touch-ups.
