Traditional health-risk behaviors, such as problem drinking, smoking, marijuana use, and unsafe sexual behavior are interrelated and not isolated events in the life of adolescents. New health-risk behaviors are emerging: risky music-listening behaviors, which may induce hearing loss.

Risky music-listening behaviors are highly associated with traditional health-risk behaviors. Risky MP3-player listeners are often cannabis users. Recorded music, parent voices, and sung lullabies have been shown to increase oxygen saturation, nonnutritive sucking, and weight gain in premature infants.

Parent-preferred melodies and entrained live rhythm and breath sounds can enhance quiet alert and sleep states, suck response, and oxygen saturation in premature infants and significantly reduce fear and anxiety perception in parents. (Read the full article)

A Pacifier-Activated Music Player With Mother's Voice Improves Oral Feeding in Preterm Infants

Preterm infants must develop oral feeding skills before successfully transitioning to home. Pacifier-activated devices playing selected music can improve nonnutritive sucking in preterm infants. A mother’s voice is a positive auditory stimulus for infants.

A brief intervention with a pacifier-activated music player using mother’s voice can decrease tube feeding duration without adverse effects on stress or growth. Operant conditioning with positive reinforcement is an effective developmental strategy to improve preterm infants’ feeding skills. (Read the full article)
