aps Brazil government warns of economic collapse in 30 days By news.yahoo.com Published On :: Fri, 08 May 2020 11:54:59 -0400 Brazil could face "economic collapse" in a month's time due to stay-at-home measures to stem the coronavirus outbreak, with food shortages and "social disorder," Economy Minister Paulo Guedes warned Thursday. Brazil, Latin America's biggest economy, is also the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the region. But far-right President Jair Bolsonaro - who appeared alongside Guedes, his free-market economics guru - opposes stay-at-home measures to slow the virus, saying they are unnecessarily damaging the economy. "Within about 30 days, there may start to be shortages on (store) shelves and production may become disorganized, leading to a system of economic collapse, of social disorder," Guedes said. "This is a serious alert." Bolsonaro, who has compared the new coronavirus to a "little flu," said he understood "the virus problem" and believed that "we must save lives." "But there is a problem that's worrying us more and more... and that's the issue of jobs, of the stalled economy," Bolsonaro added. "Fighting the virus shouldn't do more damage than the virus itself." Full Article

aps Watch video: Vashi foot-over-bridge collapses while being dismantled By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 08 Oct 2018 03:57:49 GMT On Sunday afternoon, a foot overbridge near the Vashi Police Naka collapsed while a part of it was being removed with a crane. Apart from the driver of the crane, who suffered minor injuries, no one has been affected by the incident. However, the incident led to traffic congestion on the road towards Mumbai coming from Navi Mumbai. Following the collapse, the Mumbai Traffic Police immediately took to Twitter to inform commuters to take alternative routes. Though cops claimed that the traffic situation normalised on Sunday night, most vehicles on Monday morning took the alternate route via Airoli to avoid getting stuck in traffic. Watch the video here... Locals and traffic officials have alleged the Public Works Department (PWD) didn't inform anyone from the Navi Mumbai traffic police or the Vashi police about the dismantling work on Sunday, and that the crane used for it was of a low capacity. The incident occurred when PWD engineers were dismantling the bridge. When the team was removing a part with the help of a crane, the device couldn't handle the pressure of the bridge, and thus ended up collapsing on the road. Traffic and disaster officials said the crane being used was of a poor capacity. PWD should have instead brought in two cranes having a good capacity. mid-day reached out to local PWD officer Kishor Patil, but he remained unavailable for comment. PWD built this bridge two years ago. However, locals said that just six months later, it got damaged after a trailer crashed into it. Nobody was using it after that, but PWD decided to demolish it only this month after one-and-a-half years had passed. Traffic officials said that prior to the collapse, traffic had already been diverted to the other side of the road, so no one was injured in the incident. PWD officials allegedly failed to inform all officials concerned with the area as well as citizens about the demolition, which is why it took longer to manage the situation. Many users on social networking site Twitter shared videos of the same on their accounts expressing their frustration and anger over the situation. Here's a look at a few. aps Taapsee Pannu's missing the madness; shares a throwback picture! By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 22 Apr 2020 04:18:49 GMT Taapsee Pannu is missing the usual bustle of a film set. Yesterday, she shared a throwback picture from a shoot and wrote, "This throwback is clearly out of missing the madness we thrive in as actors. The calm we find in the most crazy situations. Need to get back to the chaos soon. By the way, that's a rig being attached to my scooter to test my balancing skills. Both with the weight and emotions in the take (sic)." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taapsee Pannu (@taapsee) onApr 20, 2020 at 11:14pm PDT On the professional front, Taapsee Pannu was last seen in Anubhav Sinha's Thappad, along with Dia Mirza and Pavail Gulati. The actress is all set to rule the multiplexes with her multiple releases later this year and 2021 with her projects - Rashmi Rocket, Loop Lapeta, the Mithali Raj biopic, and Haseen Dillruba. Speaking about her last release, Taapsee shared, "Deepika (Padukone) and Kangana (Ranaut)—whose women-centric films, Chhapaak and Panga, released this year—are big names. We never thought that Thappad would match or surpass their collections, more so since films on acid attack survivors and a mother reviving her career don't divide the audience. It is a huge validation for everyone involved." Taapsee Pannu concluded, "It's scary when critics declare you are in top form after every film. Where do you go from there? The graph should always keep climbing because once you reach the top, you have nowhere to go except down. Praise can go to your head, though mine is firmly placed on my shoulders." aps Taapsee Pannu on Looop Lapeta: Planned to shoot outdoor portions before monsoon By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 26 Apr 2020 01:20:09 GMT Six weeks ago, Taapsee Pannu's date diary was so chock-a-block that she "couldn't even make time for my dental surgery". Cut to present—the actor is confined to her home, feeling helpless as the schedules for her four back-to-back projects have been "disrupted" due to the lockdown. While she was to shoot a portion of Rashmi Rocket in early April, Pannu says she had dedicated the summer to film Looop Lapeta, the official adaptation of the German thriller, Run Lola Run (1998). "Looop Lapeta was to be shot across Goa and Mumbai. We had planned to film the outdoor portions before the monsoon, and complete the indoor portions during the rains. Now, we will have to re-work the outdoor schedule because monsoons last for four months here. When the situation returns to normal, we'll have to start the planning on every project from scratch," says Pannu, who is utilising the time for scripts narrations over video calls. "I liked one of the scripts I recently heard, so I'll assign dates to that as well." A still from German thriller Run Lola Run So, what is she doing when not cherry-picking projects? "I am working out regularly; otherwise, it will be difficult to attain the fitness level [that is required for Rashmi Rocket and Shabaash Mithu]. My trainer and I are in touch, but I am mostly resorting to floor and mat exercises. Currently, my cardio workout includes climbing stairs." The stay-at-home period has also made her explore her culinary skills. "I have lived alone for 10 years, and until now, I didn't even know how to make tea! But, now, I am an expert. I made biryani and butter garlic prawns for my sister's birthday. And on today's menu is matar paneer," she laughs before hanging up. Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. aps Devendra Fadnavis: Fix responsibility for bridge collapse by Friday By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 15 Mar 2019 05:50:58 GMT Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he had asked BMC chief Ajoy Mehta to fix "primary responsibility" for Thursday's foot overbridge collapse by Friday evening. The deck of a foot overbridge on DN Road connected to CSMT station collapsed Thursday evening, killing six persons and injuring 31. Fadnavis was speaking to reporters after meeting the injured in St George's Hospital nearby. "It is shocking that such an accident can take place even after a structural audit. Primary responsibility will be fixed by this evening. I have asked civic chief (Ajoy Mehta) to find out names of those responsible," Fadnavis said. "A high-level probe into this incident has already been ordered. Those responsible (for the collapse) will be punished," he said. Earlier in the day, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official had said the FOB was found to be structurally safe when it was audited in August 2016, soon after a British-era bridge over Savitri River got washed away in monsoon downpour in Mahad in Raigad district. During that audit, 354 bridges were checked for their structural soundness. The FOB that collapsed on Thursday was marked C2B. This means it needed minor repairs only. Tenders were floated for the repair but it got held up," the official had said on Friday morning. Fadnavis also said he had ordered a re-visit of all earlier structural audits carried out on such structures. The Maharashtra CM visited the mishap site post the visit to the hospital. aps Mumbai: Hawkers crawl back into Kurla wall collapse site By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 13 Sep 2018 03:33:31 GMT Close to a week after the September 7 Kurla wall collapse that injured four people, the notorious hawkers who played a part in causing it are back. mid-day observed this on a visit to the site of the incident outside the railway station on Thursday. All of the hawkers are sitting within 150 metres of the railway station, despite a 2017 Bombay High Court ban on the same. The Central Railway (CR) has alerted the BMC about their presence. Local MLA Mangesh Kudalkar said, "The wall was leaning. I'd alerted the railways in June 2017 and done regular follow-ups, but the issue kept moving from one department to another. And then, this happened," he said. CR had held the hawkers partly responsible for the collapse, saying they'd drilled holes into the structure, thus weakening it. In addition to them, two old trees, whose roots got entangled in the concrete wall had also weakened it. Railway officials said preliminary inquiry into the collapse had revealed that the wall had been damaged. "This wall is made of brick masonry. Hawkers used the outer face of this wall for hanging their goods on thick nails and hooks and weakened it. Moreover, there are two old peepal trees near this boundary wall. Some roots of these trees also entered this wall, which may have weakened it further. We've already begun work on building a new wall and have also spoken to BMC about the hawkers' issue," said a railway official. mid-day reached out to the civic body, but they remained unavailable. aps Taapsee Pannu: Thappad would have run for three more weeks By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 4 May 2020 01:41:34 GMT Taapsee Pannu's Thappad won rave reviews on its release in the last week of February. Just as the film was gaining steam, the theatre lockdown brought its box-office run to a screeching halt. With the Anubhav Sinha-directed venture dropping online over the weekend, Pannu believes it has arrived at the right time, given the sharp spike in cases of domestic violence. "Thappad was in theatres for only two weeks, and its numbers were rising due to positive word-of-mouth. It would have run for another three weeks. But in March, COVID-19 was a far bigger crisis than the [box-office] numbers of any movie. Everyone associated with the film got their due, and now, it's out there for others to watch too," says the actor, who shone as Amrita, a doting wife who finds herself re-assessing her marriage after an episode of domestic violence. A still from Thappad By bringing powerful women-driven narratives to the screen, Pannu has built a loyal fan base over the past few years. But where audiences have hailed her for becoming the voice of the everyday woman, a section has labelled her 'feminazi', misreading her fight for women's rights as an attack on the opposite sex. "I don't understand the term 'feminazi', but most people around us don't even know what feminism means. It stands for equal opportunities. We have only started exploring the different shades of women and their heroism on screen. For decades, men have bashed up villains; nobody described them as 'male-Nazi'. Then why is Thappad or any film that champions a woman's right and asserts her existence seen as the work of a 'feminazi'? There needs to be equality even in these definitions, and artistes are working towards it." Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. aps Taapsee Pannu reveals she is enjoying her stay at home, keeps sitting at her favourite corners By Published On :: Thu, 07 May 2020 13:13:18 GMT For many of us, this lock-down is turning out to be the longest break we've ever taken, from going out, or going anywhere for that matter. And for actors, it is a break with no 'work from home' which they are spending with family and loved ones. Taapsee Pannu is also making the most of it in her Mumbai house, along with sister Shagun Pannu. Speaking to a leading daily, Taapsee opened up on how actors work so hard to have a house of their own but would barely have any time to spend there as they were always traveling for work. She added that she was reveling in her uninterrupted free time and would just sit at her favourite corners of the house. Several cities including Mumbai and Taapsee's hometown Delhi, where her parents live, come under the red zone. However, the actor says she is relieved that her parents do not live around the hotspot zones, since they both are above 60 years in age and needed to be careful. She went on to add that her parents, one retired and another a house wife, did not go out much and hence weren't very severely affected by the lock-down. Taapsee will be next seen in Akshay Kumar starrer Rashmi Rocket and Aanand L Rai's Haseen Dillruba. Full Article
aps How the YES Bank Collapse Unfolded - 10 Points By feeds.equitymaster.com Published On :: Mon, 9 Mar 2020 00:00:00 GMT Posted by Equitymaster In under 3 years, Yes Bank has gone from being a darling of investors to a pariah. Here's a look at the events that led to the crisis in 10 points. 2017: RBI forces Yes Bank to disclose that there is big divergence in its non-performing loans of Rs 42 billion reported in the company's audited accounts for the year ended March 2016. The divergence further widened to almost Rs 64 billion a year later. To put this in perspective, the RBI audit had pegged its total gross non-performing assets (NPAs) at 5% for FY16, against the bank's own assessment of only 0.8% for the same year. September 19, 2018: Not surprisingly, a year later, RBI refuses to give Yes Bank CEO Rana Kapoor an extension to his term as MD. The apex bank asks Kapoor to step down by end of January 2019. Kapoor fights back...but it always seemed like a battle he was set to lose. November 27, 2018: Rating agency Moody's cuts bank's rating outlook to 'negative' from 'stable' citing concerns over corporate governance. This is a big whammy...for a bank, its credit rating is everything. January 24, 2019: Yes Bank hires the head of Deutsche Bank India, Ravneet Gill, as its new CEO. There's hope...even though Gill has not run a bank of this size before. The stock price rallies 66% in the days following the appointment. May 14, 2019: RBI appoints former central bank Deputy Governor R. Gandhi as additional director to Yes Bank's board - a rare move signaling an increased level of scrutiny on the lender.Yes Bank reports 91% drop in profit in 1QFY20, provisions surge and gross NPA ratio stands at 5%. October 3, 2019: CEO Gill says bank is in talks with private equity firms, strategic investors and family offices to raise additional capital. Again, this appears to be good news. October 31, 2019: Yes Bank gets binding investment offer of US$ 1.2 billion from a global investor. But this does not go down well as credibility of the likely largest investor is questioned in the media. November 1, 2019: Yes Bank reports bigger-than-expected loss for 2QFY20, NPA to loans ratio swells to 7.4% and provisions swell to Rs 13.4 billion. March 6, 2020: It's been months now and there is little progress on capital raising (other than rumours floating around). RBI takes over Yes Bank's board and imposes a month-long moratorium, imposing a limit of Rs 50,000 on withdrawals. March 7, 2020: Stock price of Yes Bank crashes by nearly 60%. At it's worse the stock was down at Rs 5.7 that day. RBI shares a restructuring plan for Yes Bank...basically a bailout by SBI. Well, then...that's the Yes Bank timeline. At the time of writing, stock price of Yes Bank was trading up by 31%. Next time, when you think of buying a banking share...or making a deposit...be sure you understand the risk. This article (How the YES Bank Collapse Unfolded - 10 Points) is authored by Equitymaster.Equitymaster is a leading 'independent' equity research initiative focused on providing well-researched and unbiased opinions on stocks listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
