In celebration of Veterans Day, we were excited to catch up with Johnathan Edmonds, Veterans Inclusion Group Lead and Design Engineering Director, for a heartfelt chat on his journey through military service to leadership within Cadence. Throughout the conversation, he shared the importance of creating space for Veterans, the skills they offer, and his aspirations for what the Veterans Inclusion Group will achieve in the years ahead. Oh yeah, and he flies planes, too! Join us as we dive into what makes this holiday special for so many across the nation and how we can respectfully commemorate it together. Johnathan, you’re a retired Air Force Reservist, pilot, and now a Design Engineering Director. Can you tell us about your journey from the military to your current role at Cadence? I started my military and electronics journey in the Navy. I enlisted at 18 and served for six years as an aviation electronics technician. During this time, I was able to learn about and repair electronics on planes. This set me up for success, and when I was honorably discharged, I attended Virginia Tech to study computer engineering. Once I graduated, I continued my career as an engineer, but I still wanted to be a military pilot. From my past experience, I knew the reserves were an option where I could learn to fly and still have a civilian career. Not only was I lucky enough to get selected to go to pilot training, but after I returned from flight school, my luck grew, and I was hired at Cadence. Cadence has supported me throughout my military career, which has been a great benefit, as many companies don’t support reservists. The best thing about serving and being employed at Cadence is how I could blend my skill sets to further the Air Force’s mission and achieve great things in engineering. As the first lead of Cadence’s Veterans Inclusion Group, you played an integral part in growing our culture and building community at the company since launching the group four years ago. What inspired you to take on the role of Inclusion Group Lead? I was inspired by three things: camaraderie, service, and outreach. I wanted to see if we could achieve a similar sense of community through the Veterans Inclusion Group as we had during our service life. I also wanted to see how we could better serve our Veterans here at Cadence. I wanted to explore any benefits that could be expanded, roles that could be developed by Vets, and, lastly, I wanted to serve a broader community. COVID-19 put a damper on some of the community support, but we are getting back on track with Veteran employment programs and volunteer efforts like Carry the Load and Gold Star Families. Why is it important to have this space dedicated to Veteran employees? There are many reasons! Networking, for one, creates a stronger, more unified Cadence culture. Two, Vets face a variety of issues not generally understood by those who have not served, such as PTSD, where to get help for disabilities, how to get an old medical record, etc. As I mentioned, I’m also passionate about connecting Veterans with employment and job opportunities. It is so nice to work for a company that actively recruits Vets. We have our own “language,” if you will, so it’s nice to have a space to talk in the language that we are familiar with. What have been some of your favorite moments leading this group over the past few years? Are there any “wins” that you would like to recognize? We have a lot of wins. Events held during COVID-19 and getting past COVID-19, donating to worthwhile causes, and hosting guest speakers are all fantastic milestones and accomplishments. That said, the biggest win is the hiring of new Veteran employees. Mark Murphy, Corporate VP of Sales Operations, and I have both welcomed Vets to our team during this time, and it is such a joy to watch what someone can do when given the opportunity to succeed in the right environment. As you are set to transition out of the lead role next year, what do you hope to see the Veterans Inclusion Group accomplish next? My hope is that the Veterans Inclusion Group partners with other companies, expanding our reach externally and exploring new opportunities to engage Veterans outside of Cadence. What are the most meaningful or impactful actions employees everywhere can take to support Veteran coworkers? I think there is one answer to both questions. I recommend that people engage with their companies’ employee resource groups (ERGs) and have conversations with them. Opening up the lines of communication will lead to new paths in their journeys. What are you looking forward to in 2025, both personally and professionally? In 2025, professionally, I am looking forward to taking mixed-signal systems and verification to another level by including emulation, automatic model generation, and seeing which boundaries we can push in our SerDes and Chiplets products. Personally, I am looking forward to making my SXS street legal so I can drive places without getting a ticket, seeing my children participate in sports, church, and school, and taking my wife on vacation to Europe or somewhere else we can unplug. lear Head of UN nuclear watchdog: 'Dire straits dynamic' with Iran's nuclear program amid Mideast wars By www.voanews.com Published On :: Tue, 12 Nov 2024 13:54:27 -0500 BAKU, Azerbaijan — The head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog said Tuesday he's hopeful that meetings this week with Iranian officials, including the country's new president, can lead to a breakthrough in monitoring the country's nuclear program, a longstanding issue that has gained new urgency as Israel has twice struck Iran amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will travel to Iran on Wednesday to meet for the first time with President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was elected in July. Grossi said he hopes to build on positive discussions he had with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the U.N. General Assembly in September. "We have a problem that we need to solve," Grossi said in an interview at the U.N. climate conference in Azerbaijan. "That is this gap, this lack of confidence, which we should not allow to grow into a self-fulfilling prophecy of using nuclear facilities as targets." He added: "There has been a bit of a dire straits dynamic with Iran that we want to go beyond." Iran is rapidly advancing its atomic program while increasing stockpiles of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels, all in defiance of international demands, according to the IAEA. Iran says its program is for energy purposes, not to build weapons. Grossi's visit comes as Israel and Iran have traded missile attacks in recent months after more than a year of war in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas, a group supported by Iran. Grossi noted that international law prohibits the attack of nuclear facilities and "it's obvious that is something that can have radiological consequences." The Biden administration said last month that it had won assurances from Israel that it would not attack nuclear or oil sites. A 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers put limits on Iran's nuclear program, which the West fears could be used to make nuclear weapons. The deal included the lifting of economic sanctions on Iran. But that deal collapsed after Donald Trump's administration in 2018 pulled the United States from it. That led Iran to abandon all limits put on its program and enrich uranium to up to 60% purity. When asked if the IAEA feared Iran may be developing a bomb, Grossi said he didn't "have any information that would sustain that." He added that inspectors' job was not to "judge intentions," but rather verify that what Iran says about its nuclear program was true. Trump's reelection last week raises questions about whether and how the incoming administration and Iran may engage. Grossi said he had worked with the first Trump administration, which he said engaged in "seamless, professional work," and looked forward to looking with Trump's second administration. The Indian government in its federal budget this year had proposed to partner with private players to develop small nuclear reactors to increase the amount of electricity from sources that do not produce carbon dioxide emissions. States should consider setting up nuclear power plants at the sites where coal-based thermal power plants have completed their life, Manohar Lal, the country’s power minister, told states as per a government statement. India’s stringent nuclear compensation laws have hampered talks with foreign power plant builders such as General Electric GE.N and Westinghouse. The country, which currently has about 8 gigawatts of nuclear capacity, aims to increase it to 20 GW by 2032. The initiation step of mRNA translation is a gatekeeper of long-term memory by controlling the production of plasticity-related proteins in the brain. The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) controls mRNA translation, mainly through phosphorylation of the eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E)-binding proteins (4E-BPs) and ribosomal protein S6 kinases (S6Ks). mTORC1 signaling decreases throughout brain development, starting from the early postnatal period. Here, we discovered that in mice, the age-dependent decrease in mTORC1 signaling occurs selectively in excitatory but not inhibitory neurons. Using a gene conditional knockout (cKO) strategy, we demonstrate that either up- or downregulating the mTORC1-4E-BP2 axis in GAD65 inhibitory interneurons, but not excitatory neurons, results in long-term object recognition and object location memory deficits. Our data indicate that the mTORC1 pathway in inhibitory but not excitatory neurons plays a key role in memory formation. Full Article

Importantly, we share programmatic lessons learned on increasing universal access to this new sexual and reproductive health technology. PATH developed a digital training curriculum for family planning providers who are learning to offer subcutaneous DMPA (DMPA-SC), including through self-injection, as an option among a range of contraceptive methods. The DMPA-SC eLearning course for health workers includes 10 lessons with an emphasis on informed choice counseling and training clients to self-inject. In partnership with Ministries of Health in Senegal and Uganda, the course was rolled out in select areas in 2019–2020, including during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical distancing requirements restricted in-person training. We conducted evaluations in both countries to assess the practical application of this digital training approach for contraceptive introduction. The evaluation consisted of a post-training survey, an observational assessment conducted during post-training supportive supervision, and an estimation of training costs.In both countries, a majority (88.6% in Uganda and 64.3% in Senegal) scored above 80% on a DMPA-SC knowledge test following the training. In Senegal, where there was a comparison group of providers trained in person, those providers scored similar on the post-test to eLearners. Providers in both groups and in both countries felt more prepared to administer DMPA-SC or offer self-injection to clients after receiving a supervision visit (93%–98% of eLearners felt very prepared after supervision as compared to 45%–72% prior). The evaluation results suggest that digital approaches offer a number of benefits, can be cost-effective, and are most optimal when blended with in-person training and/or supportive supervision. The training-of-trainers (TOT) model used to train program managers (PMs) and health care workers (HCWs) is ineffective for adult learning and limits immunization programs’ success. We incorporated adult learning principles (ALPs) in designing and delivering TOT for immunization PMs and HCWs to use data to engage communities for tailored immunization strategies.Methods: Our study was implemented in 3 local government areas (LGAs) of the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. A training curriculum was developed, integrating ALPs and technical and operational content based on best practices in delivering immunization training and the training needs assessment findings. State PMs (n=10), LGA PMs (n=30), and HCWs (n=42) were trained on the human-centered design for tailoring immunization programs (HCD-TIP) approaches using ALPs. We used interviews and surveys with purposively and conveniently sampled PMs and HCWs, respectively, and observations to assess participants’ satisfaction, knowledge and competence, behavior changes, and results. The interviews were analyzed thematically, and surveys were statistically.Results: There was a high level of satisfaction with the training among LGA PMs (100%), state PMs (91%), and HCWs (85%), with significant knowledge and competence improvements post-training (P<.001). The trained participants conducted 2 HCD sessions with 24 undervaccinated communities and co-designed 24 prototype solutions for testing. Results showed increased coverage of the pentavalent vaccine first dose (54%) and third dose (188%) across 12 participating communities. Improved community colaboration, communication skills, and data-driven approaches were the most cited behavior changes in practice.Conclusion: The application of ALPs in training, use of HCD-TIP approaches and tools, and supportive supervision enhanced PMs’ and HCWs’ capacity for tailored interventions. Countries should consider adopting a holistic approach that focuses on using these approaches in immunization programs to strengthen the health system for equitable vaccine coverage. Full Article
lear Twinning Partnership Network: A Learning and Experience-Sharing Network Among Health Professionals in Rwanda to Improve Health Services By ghspjournal.org Published On :: 2024-10-29T12:28:39-07:00 ABSTRACTWe describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of a novel twinning approach: the Twinning Partnership Network (TPN). Twinning is a well-known approach to peer learning that has been used in a variety of settings to build organizational capacity. Although twinning takes many forms, the heart of the approach is that institutions with shared characteristics collaborate via sharing information and experiences to achieve a specific goal. We adapted a twinning partnership strategy developed by the World Health Organization to create a network of like-minded health institutions. The key innovation of the TPN is the network, which ensures that an institution always has a high-performing peer with whom to partner on a specific topic area of interest. We identified 10 hospitals and 30 districts in Rwanda to participate in the TPN. These districts and hospitals participated in a kickoff workshop in which they identified capacity gaps, clarified goals, and selected twinning partners. After the workshop, districts and hospitals participated in exchange visits, coaching visits, and virtual and in-person learning events. We found that districts and hospitals that selected specific areas and worked on them throughout the duration of the TPN with their peers improved their performance significantly when compared with those that selected and worked on other areas. Accreditation scores improved by 5.6% more in hospitals selecting accreditation than those that did not. Districts that selected improving community-based health insurance coverage improved by 4.8% more than districts that did not select this topic area. We hypothesize that these results are due to senior management’s interest and motivation to improve in these specific areas, the motivation gained by learning from high-performing peers with similar resources, and context-specific knowledge sharing from peer hospitals and districts. lear Summary: Appropriate Use Criteria for the Use of Nuclear Medicine in Fever of Unknown Origin By jnm.snmjournals.org Published On :: 2024-11-01T04:25:31-07:00 The diagnostic work-up of patients with fever of unknown origin (FUO) begins with a thorough history and physical examination, complete blood count with differential, chest x-ray, urinalysis and culture, electrolyte panel, liver enzymes, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein level. Additional imaging procedures, including nuclear medicine tests, are generally used as second-line procedures, with 18F-FDG PET and PET/CT assuming increasingly important roles in the diagnostic work-up. The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the American College of Nuclear Medicine convened an autonomous expert work group to comprehensively review the published literature for nuclear imaging in adults and children with FUO and establish appropriate use criteria (AUC). This process was performed in accordance with the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014, which requires that all referring physicians consult AUC by using a clinical decision support mechanism before ordering advanced diagnostic imaging services. The complete findings and discussions of the work group were published on January 8, 2023, and are available at https://www.snmmi.org/ClinicalPractice/content.aspx?ItemNumber=15666. The AUC in the final document are intended to assist referring health care providers in appropriate use of nuclear medicine imaging procedures in patients with FUO. The work group noted limitations in the current literature on nuclear medicine imaging for FUO, with the need for well-designed prospective multicenter investigations. Consensus findings from published data and expert opinions were used to create recommendations in common clinical scenarios for adults and children. Included in the complete document is a discussion of inflammation of unknown origin (IUO), a recently described entity. In view of the fact that the criteria for FUO and IUO are similar (except for fever > 38.3°C [100.9°F]) and that the most common etiologies of these 2 entities are similar, it is the expert opinion of the work group that the recommendations for nuclear medicine imaging of FUO are also applicable to IUO. Herein, we present our preliminary findings on the evaluation of a deep learning–optimized sequence using T1-weighted imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical and optimized deep learning–based image reconstruction T1 3D Sampling Perfection with Application optimized Contrast using different flip angle Evolution (SPACE) were evaluated, comparing noncontrast sequences in 10 healthy controls and postcontrast sequences in 5 consecutive patients. Images were reviewed on a Likert-like scale by 4 fellowship-trained neuroradiologists. Scores (range, 1–4) were separately assigned for 11 vessel segments in terms of vessel wall and lumen delineation. Additionally, images were evaluated in terms of overall background noise, image sharpness, and homogeneous CSF signal. Segment-wise scores were compared using paired samples t tests. RESULTS: The scan time for the clinical and deep learning–based image reconstruction sequences were 7:26 minutes and 5:23 minutes respectively. Deep learning–based image reconstruction images showed consistently higher wall signal and lumen visualization scores, with the differences being statistically significant in most vessel segments on both pre- and postcontrast images. Deep learning–based image reconstruction had lower background noise, higher image sharpness, and uniform CSF signal. Depiction of intracranial pathologies was better or similar on the deep learning–based image reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary findings suggest that deep learning–based image reconstruction–optimized intracranial vessel wall imaging sequences may be helpful in achieving shorter gradient times with improved vessel wall visualization and overall image quality. These improvements may help with wider adoption of intracranial vessel wall imaging in clinical practice and should be further validated on a larger cohort. Full Article
