Morrison participated today in a videoconference with about 80 students and teachers at Scarsdale High School in New York, focusing on issues related to the APEC Leaders Meetings in Honolulu next week. Also participating in the discussion was Robert Koepcke, Deputy Director of the U.S. State Department's Bureau for East Asia and Pacific Affairs.

Video of the discussion will be posted soon as part of the launch of a new online school exchange program called "Open Channels," which will connect more than 60 schools in the U.S., Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere.

The 2014-2015 Pacific Islands Women in Leadership (WIL) Program held its capstone workshop in Suva, Fiji, May 17-23, 2015.  The weeklong program allowed the participants to reconnect with each other as well as make new connections within the Pacific Region.

The group reported on the status of the projects they started upon returning home after the initial program workshop held in Honolulu in October 2015.  Two of the participants from Fiji shared their projects with the WIL group with site visits.

National Endowment for the Humanities Awards $360K to EWC for Teacher Workshops on Pacific War Legacies
HONOLULU (October 7, 2010) – The East-West Center’s AsiaPacificEd Program for Schools has been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for teacher professional development programs focusing on legacies of World War II in the Pacific.

The first grant, an $180,900 award, is to conduct a three-week institute on “Southeast Asia: At the Crossroads of World War II.” The second grant, an $180,000 award, is for an NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop titled “Pearl Harbor: History and Memory Across Asia and the Pacific.” Both workshops are conducted in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, where the Center’s main campus is located.

EWC Jefferson Fellowships Deadline Draws Near
HONOLULU (June 5) – The deadline for the 2007 Fall  East-West Center Jefferson Fellowships applications is drawing near, according to Susan Kreifels, East-West Center media programs coordinator. Kreifels says all applications must be filed by June 20.

The Fall program, Mekong on the Move: Asia’s New Economic Frontier?, is open to Asian, Pacific Island, and U.S. journalists with at least five years experience. The three-week travel and dialogue program takes place Sept. 30 through Oct. 21. It begins at the East-West Center in Honolulu with journalists traveling from there to Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi.

Qualified journalists wishing to apply should visit the East-West Center website at www.eastwestcenter.org/jefferson for applications and details.

By Tim Brown and Wiwat Peerapatanapokin HONOLULU (September 17, 2019)—In 2018, roughly 6 million people were living with HIV in Asia and the Pacific, and 310,000 were newly infected, according to UNAIDS estimates. Despite these troubling numbers, financial support for the fight against AIDS is stagnant, and international resources for HIV programs in the region are declining. Given the continued HIV infection levels and limited funds for halting the epidemic, it is more important than ever for prevention efforts to achieve maximum impact with the resources available. This means that programs need to target the key populations most at risk of contracting HIV. In Asia, these key populations are female sex workers and their clients, people who inject drugs, and men who have sex with men....
