dd Maroon 5 called out for faking 'Sugar' wedding crashing By www.scpr.org Published On :: Sat, 17 Jan 2015 17:05:26 -0800 A screenshot from Maroon 5's "Sugar" music video.; Credit: Maroon 5 Mike RoeMaroon 5 has a new music video built around a simple, viral-bait premise: Adam Levine and the rest of the band trying to crash as many weddings around Los Angeles as they can in one day (Dec. 6 of last year). It's a lot of fun, directed by "Wedding Crashers" movie director David Dobkin, but it appears that some of those "crashed weddings" may have been staged. Watch the video (warning: contains adult language): Maroon 5: Sugar Fans have noticed that several of the couples seen in the video appear to be actors. Actors Stephen and Barbara Woo posted on Facebook that they played the parents of one of the brides in the video and said that not only were the weddings staged, they didn't even take place on one day, claiming that all the weddings were shot in the same location over the course of three days. Facebook post by actors The groom from the wedding featured the most in the video has been named by observers as Nico Evers-Swindell, according to Cosmopolitan. Evers-Swindell was already married to actress Megan Ferguson since 2011 — and she's not the "bride" in the video. Fans have fingered one of the models as "America's Next Top Model" runner-up Raina Hein, according to Cosmopolitan. Also, the man believed to be her long-term boyfriend isn't the groom in the Maroon 5 weddings. Don't lose heart, though — at least one of the weddings in the video appears to be real, with wedding photographer Duke Khodaverdian telling E! that yes, it was the real deal. "It was an incredible surprise and everyone at the wedding is going to cherish those memories," Khodaverdian told E! in December. Instagram 1 Instagram 2 A representative for the band told "Entertainment Tonight" that only the grooms knew about the band in each case — but it looks like that means in the case of the real crashed weddings. The representative did concede that some shots "had to be shot separately from the real weddings due to time and space constraints that were given," and the article does note that the video was shot over three days. Levine expressed his excitement about crashing the weddings in an interview with People magazine. "I had no idea I would be affected by the overwhelming reactions we received from the couples and guests," Levine said. He told "Entertainment Tonight" that it was stressful to arrange, but that the surprise felt good. "[We were] happy that they liked our band, too – [that] would have been a total disaster." They also solicited Twitter to find people lip-syncing "Sugar" to possibly put in their music video, but it doesn't look like those submissions got used. Maroon 5 Sugar tweet If you want to see Levine involved in a different dubious outfit, you can see him back hosting "The Voice" on Feb. 23. Open call auditions for the show begin Jan. 24 in New York, with Los Angeles auditions on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Did you spot any more actors you recognize in this video? Do you have any more evidence of any of these weddings being either real or faked? Let me know on Twitter at @MikeRoe. This content is from Southern California Public Radio. dd Patt's Hats: Disney sells Tonto's headdress from 'The Lone Ranger' By www.scpr.org Published On :: Mon, 01 Jul 2013 16:47:55 -0700 Patt Morrison models a headdress from the movie "The Lone Ranger."; Credit: Michelle Lanz/KPCC Patt MorrisonTrust me – you’re going to be seeing a lot of these between now and Halloween. I went to “The Lone Ranger” premiere last month, and outside the theater, Disneyland began selling a version of the Tonto headdress dreamed up by Johnny Depp and his folks for his role in the film, which I found to be a rollicking, ironic version of the classic action adventure with some very sober scenes evoking Native Americans’ tragic history. The inspiration, Depp says, was artist Kirby Sattler’s interpretive 2006 painting “I Am Crow.” Depp himself has claimed Native American ancestry, and the bird atop his bean plays a substantial if silent role in the proceedings. It is an interpretive painting, as I said, not a literal rendering of any tribal makeup. In the Sattler painting, the bird is flying above the figure’s head, not perched on it. But the movie’s invested in storytelling, not the fine points of accuracy. If it had been, it wouldn’t have made the historical solecisms of relocating both Monument Valley and the transcontinental railroad to … Texas. This content is from Southern California Public Radio. dd Finding a middle ground By www.ifpri.org Published On :: Wed, 28 Jan 2015 16:07:43 +0000 Adopting integrated soil fertility management (ISFM)—practices that combine organic inputs and judicious amounts of inorganic fertilizer and improved seeds—offers farmers a higher profit and is more sustainable than using inorganic fertilizer. Yet its adoption rates across Africa south of the Sahara (SSA) are among the lowest worldwide. As I presented at an Ag Sector Council seminar earlier today, a recent study conducted as part of an IFPRI economics of land degradation project has revealed an inverse relationship between profit and adoption rate of most non-ISFM fertility practices (see figure below). In the same study, ISFM was shown to reduce climate-related production risks. More information Presentation: Smallholder adoption of Integrated Soil Fertility Management Video: The economics of land degradation IFPRI research on land degradation Why are African farmers not adopting ISFM practices? One reason is that agricultural extension agents simply don’t have sufficient capacity to advise farmers on ISFM, climate change, and other global change-related farming practices. In addition, ISFM requires more labor than other practices, and governments are not investing in developing and supporting them. How can farmers be encouraged to switch? An experiment conducted in Malawi showed that, without exception, all farmers responded to ISFM incentives offered on the condition that they plant agroforestry trees or adopt conservation agriculture. This implies that adoption of ISFM could be increased by: offering short-term training for agricultural extension agents on ISFM, climate change, and other new farming technologies; conditioning benefits to easily verifiable organic soil fertility management practices, such as agroforestry, that will more than reduce the current cost of subsidies, yet increase yield and profit; and promoting agroforestry and other plant-based organic soil fertility management practices to reduce the high labor intensity of ISFM. dd Developing Educational Interventions Addressing the “Messiness” of Engineering (November 14, 2024 2:00pm) By events.umich.edu Published On :: Wed, 06 Nov 2024 11:22:46 -0500 Event Begins: Thursday, November 14, 2024 2:00pm Location: Duderstadt Center Organized By: Engineering Education Research Abstract: Engineering textbooks have problems, and those problems have problems. While they may be complex and time-consuming, textbook problems are “tidy” in that they are well-defined, closed-ended, and decontextualized. In contrast, the practice of engineering is “messy.” The design process is ill-defined, modeling and analysis are open-ended, and the engineered systems affect and are affected by society in positive and negative ways. In this talk I frame the messiness of engineering as an important part of the conversation about DEI in engineering. By exposing students to the messiness of engineering throughout their undergraduate education, instructors can better prepare students for their careers; help students to reflect upon their views and biases; and present engineering as socially constructed, instead of inherently upholding a white supremacist culture. I will then present the SHUTTLE Lab’s design-based research approach to putting some of this messiness back into engineering science courses. Specifically, I will describe our work addressing the messiness of mathematical modeling. We are focused on the professional skill of engineering judgment, and are simultaneously creating open-ended modeling problems, studying emerging engineering modeling judgment, and training faculty to notice and respond to their students’ displays of engineering judgment. Bio: Aaron W. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering and a Core Faculty member in Engineering Education Research at the University of Michigan. His design-based research focuses on how to re-contextualize engineering science engineering courses to better reflect and prepare students for the reality of ill-defined, sociotechnical engineering practice. Aaron holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Michigan and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was an instructor in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Outside of work, Aaron enjoys collecting LEGO NASA sets, camping, and playing disc golf. Full Article Workshop / Seminar

The two-day event addressed international standards, mechanisms and principles of regulation and self-regulation of online media, as well as models of broadcasting regulation and approaches to broadcasting licensing. Participants were representatives of the Mejlis (parliament), the State Committee for Television, Radio and Cinematography of Turkmenistan, the Supreme Court, the Ministries of Communications and Justice and representatives from educational and research institutions, national broadcast, print and online media. “While taking many forms such as provisions in national legislation, administrative directives or technical instructions, regulation may also serve different goals, including public interest, market needs or technical efficiency,” said Ivo Petrov, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat. “Our event today is held in a new format of a master class, and we organized it to engage participants in an active discussion on concrete practical examples and recommendations on applying efficient mechanisms of regulating online media and broadcasting to promote a free and pluralistic mass media.” International experts also provided insights on the legal aspects of media and advertising activities as well as media policy in the context of media regulation. The practical part of the master class included case studies on models of regulating the broadcasting sphere and covering large sports competitions. The televising and broadcasting of global performances and sports events formed a special focus of discussions in light of the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which will be hosted by Turkmenistan. Participants exchanged views on the organization of newsrooms and press services for large-scale sports events as well as the access of journalists and rules of accreditation for international sports events.Related StoriesRepresentatives from Turkmenistan discuss media reforms during OSCE-organized study visit to LatviaOSCE trains Turkmenistan journalists on reporting skillsOSCE seminar in Turkmenistan promotes freedom of religion and belief Full Article OSCE Centre in Ashgabat Media freedom and development Central Asia Press release

dd The TRUMP EFFECT: Argentina suddenly withdraws negotiators from Cop29 summit after just 3 days! By www.climatedepot.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 19:53:33 +0000 Argentina’s negotiating team were ordered home. The country’s president Javier Milei has previously said that the climate crisis is a “socialist lie”. “We have instructions from the ministry of foreign affairs to no longer participate,” the country’s top environmental official said, France’s ecology minister, Agnes Pannier-Runacher, announced she was cancelling her trip to Baku to take part in the Cop29 talks. On Wednesday, representatives from Milei’s government were ordered to leave the Azerbaijani capital. Speaking to the Guardian, Argentina’s undersecretary for the environment, Ana Lamas – the country’s most senior representative on the climate and nature after Milei dissolved the environment ministry – confirmed the decision, which was first reported by Climatica. “It’s true. We have instructions from the ministry of foreign affairs to no longer participate. That’s all I can tell you,” she said. Lamas said the decision applied only to Cop29, when asked if Argentina was planning to leave the Paris agreement. There is widespread concern about the future of the climate accord after the election in the US of Donald Trump, who has pledged to exit the agreement for the second time.
