This report describes the evidence for invasion of Pacific Northwest streams by Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) that have escaped from marine salmon farms, and assesses the potential impact of farmed salmon invasion on native fishes inhabiting streams on National Forest System lands. The current risk to streams on National Forest lands in the Pacific Northwest from Atlantic salmon invasions appears to be low and is limited to a few areas in northwest Washington and southeast Alaska. However, long-term risks may be substantial if fish continue to escape from marine rearing pens or freshwater hatcheries. The two greatest threats appear to be that (1) Atlantic salmon could transmit a serious disease or parasite to native fishes, and (2) escaped salmon could eventually adapt to local conditions, leading to self-sustaining populations. If Atlantic salmon populations are eventually established, this species' preference for swiftly flowing stream habitats could facilitate competition with currently at-risk species such as steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss). This could result in a pattern of expansion similar to that observed in other nonnative aquatic plants and animals, in which a prolonged early colonization period is followed by a rapid phase of exponential growth as breeding populations adapt to local conditions.

About 1 on 46 Iowans have been tested so far, health officials said.

State data release Thursday for the first time reveals big gaps in who has — and who has not — taken the assessment at TestIowa.om:

• Less than 35 percent of those who have been assessed for tests are men. Yet men are more apt to die from the disease than women. Of the 231 Iowa deaths so far, 51 percent are of men.

• Only 2 percent of those who have been assessed for testing are age 80 or over. But 46 percent of the Iowa deaths from the virus reported so far are in that age group.

• There are gaps in the rates at which urban and rural residents are completing the assessment. Nearly 9 percent of Linn County residents have been assessed, but only about 7.6 percent of Allamakee County residents have. Yet when looking at the rate of known infection per capita, Allamakee is far worse.

Methods, systems, and techniques for keyword management are described. Some embodiments provide a keyword management system (“KMS”) configured to determine the effectiveness of multiple candidate keywords. In some embodiments, the KMS generates multiple candidate keywords based on an initial keyword. The KMS may then determine an effectiveness score for each of the candidate keywords, based on marketing information about those keywords. Next, the KMS may process the candidate keywords according to the determined effectiveness scores. In some embodiments, processing the candidate keywords includes applying rules that conditionally perform actions with respect to the candidate keywords, such as modifying advertising expenditures, modifying content, or the like.

A method and system are presented to address quantitative assessment of word recognition sensitivity of a subject, where the method comprises the steps of: (1) presenting at least one scene, comprising a plurality of letters and a background, to a subject on a display; (2) moving the plurality of letters relative to the scene; (3) receiving feedback from the subject via at least one; (4) quantitatively refining the received feedback; (5) modulating the saliency of the plurality of letters relative to accuracy of the quantitatively refined feedback; (6) calculating a critical threshold parameter; and (7) recording a critical threshold parameter onto a tangible computer readable medium.

A sharpener for sharpening a pencil, in particular a cosmetic pencil, is especially suitable, when used correctly, for producing a particularly uniform outer jacket edge in the region of the pencil tip. The sharpener includes a sharpener body, in which a pencil guide channel is provided. The pencil guide channel has a circular cone-shaped channel section and opens out in a pencil inlet opening on the outer side of the sharpener body. A paring blade is positioned tangentially to the lateral surface of the channel section. The closure cap can be detachably locked in its closing position on the storage container using at least one latching device that acts between the closure cap and the storage container. The present invention generally relates to a wiper which can be easily inserted into neck of a cosmetic container. The wiper is fabricated from elastomeric material and comprises a plurality of collapsible members configured to collapse horizontally on an exterior surface of the wiper when under stress. The plurality of collapsible members also serves as locking features by which it can be retained in the container neck. The present invention provides a process for recovering valuable metals from precious metal smelting slag, comprising: smelting the precious metal smelting slag and a flux in a top-blown rotary furnace to produce a lead-bismuth alloy, wherein the precious metal smelting slag comprises Au, Ag, Bi and Pb; electrolyzing the lead-bismuth alloy at a current density ranging from 60 to 110 A/m2 to obtain lead cathode and lead anode slime; refining the lead anode slime to produce bismuth and silver-zinc crust, and extracting gold and silver separately from the silver-zinc crust. Through utilizing a top-blown rotary furnace as the smelting apparatus and adjusting the ratio of the flux, the present invention enriches the valuable metals gold, silver, bismuth, lead or the like to lead-bismuth alloy, ensures lower contents of gold, silver, bismuth and lead in the reducing slag and thereby increases the comprehensive recovery rates of gold, silver, bismuth and lead from the precious metal smelting slag.

Methods and systems for monitoring an integrity of electrical connectivity between a repair patch and a parent structure include providing the repair patch with an embedded sensor configured to detect electrical conductivity. The repair patch includes a ply of conductive material that overlaps a portion of a conductive layer of the parent structure. A baseline set of sensor data is acquired from the sensor indicative of an electrical connectivity between the ply of conductive material of the repair patch and the conductive layer of the parent structure. One or more additional sets of data may be obtained from the sensor and compared to the baseline set of data to determine an integrity of the electrical connectivity between the ply of conductive material of the repair patch and the conductive layer of the parent structure.

A system comprising: a parent structure made of composite material and having a repair site; a repair patch made of composite material, the repair patch being bonded to the parent structure at the repair site; and a sensor embedded in the repair patch. The system may further comprise non-volatile memory and an interface unit embedded in the repair patch and electrically connected to the sensor. In one embodiment, the sensor is a loop-shaped sensor comprising an electrically conductive structure having an electrical conductivity that varies as a function of a pressure exerted on the repair patch. In another embodiment, the sensor comprises a sensor chip having nonvolatile memory. In a further embodiment, the sensor comprises an optical fiber that is sensitive to changes in pressure on or strain in the repair patch.

Lijden en ongekende trots

9 mei is de belangrijkste feestdag in Rusland en dit jaar is een kroonjaar. Het is een dag van rouw om de ruim 20 miljoen doden die de toenmalige Sovjet-Unie aan het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog te betreuren had. Maar het is ook een dag van ongekende trots. Al dat lijden heeft immers geresulteerd in de verovering van Berlijn en de val van het nazi-regime in mei 1945. Zonder het bloed, het zweet en de tranen van het Rode Leger en de Sovjet-bevolking als geheel was dat nooit gelukt.

Hoe graag had Poetin niet op het bordes op het Rode Plein gestaan om de militaire parade af te nemen, geflankeerd door wereldleiders aan de ene kant en het handjevol veteranen dat nog leeft aan de andere kant. Bekeken en bewonderd door tientallen miljoenen televisiekijkers.

Een beetje zoals president Loekasjenko van buurland en voormalige Sovjetstaat Wit-Rusland wél deed. Hij vindt het virus een waanvoorstelling:

Politiek patriottisme

De emotie die de Dag van de Overwinning in Rusland oproept is echt, maar Poetin heeft er een element aan toegevoegd: politiek patriottisme. "We hebben geen ander samenbindend idee dan patriottisme," zei hij in 2016.

Een jaar later voegde hij daaraan toe dat het laten varen van patriottisme "heel gevaarlijk is, de eerste stap op weg naar een wereldramp". En tijdens zijn jaarlijkse grote persconferentie van 2019 zei hij: "Naar mijn mening is patriottisme de enig mogelijke ideologie in een moderne democratische samenleving."

De 75ste Dag van de Overwinning zou bij uitstek in het teken moeten staan van dat politieke patriottisme en Poetin zou er het boegbeeld van zijn.

Niet gegund

Poetin vindt dat Russen op zoek moeten naar wat hen bindt: de liefde voor hun vaderland. Het probleem is dat dat zo ongeveer de enige verbindende factor is in Rusland. Op tal van andere terreinen zijn de belangentegenstellingen levensgroot. Een ander probleem is dat Poetin zichzelf als de enig mogelijke leider van dat patriottische Rusland ziet.

Hoe dan ook, zijn finest hour is hem niet gegund. Massabijeenkomsten zijn een ernstig risico voor verdere verspreiding van het coronavirus en het gaat wat dat betreft toch al niet al te best in Rusland. Voor Poetin rest een bijrol die hem maar matig zal bevallen.

Hij legt een krans bij het graf van de onbekende soldaat, hij spreekt het volk toe, misschien zingt hij 's avonds mee als het de bedoeling is dat heel Rusland het beroemde lied Dag van de Overwinning aanheft. En dan rest hem niets meer dan vanuit zijn slaapkamerraam naar het ongetwijfeld majestueuze vuurwerk te kijken.
