ala Slog AM: Kamala Harris Concedes, Trump Adminstration Takeover Begins, and Alexis Mercedes Rinck Is The Most Popular City Council Member By www.thestranger.com Published On :: Thu, 07 Nov 2024 08:34:00 -0800 The Stranger's morning news round-up. by Hannah Krieg A perfect day for a biiiiiig walk: We could all use a little sunshine right now. Today, Seattlites can expect on-and-off sunny skies—I think the weather nerds of the PNW call it “sunshowers”—and temperatures in the high 50s. Council President Rinck: We got another ballot drop last night! Here in Seattle, Alexis Mercedes Rinck has only expanded her decisive lead on the City Council’s faildaughter Tanya Woo. And it's not just Woo that Rinck’s got beat. Her vote count trumps the combined total of the 2023 City Council victors and she’s got a 26,000-vote lead over Council President Sara Nelson’s 2021 campaign. Rinck may be a minority opinion on the council, but she represents more of the electorate than any other member. Nail-biter: Washington’s 3rd Congressional District is still too close to call. U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez leads her far-right challenger Joe Kent by about 12,000 votes. We should have a clearer picture in the coming days, but for now the whole country is watching—this race is among the handful that will decide if Republicans retain their majority in the House. Another close one: It’s still a tight race for I-2066, the hedge fund millionaire's initiative that would ban the state from encouraging electrification. Something good on Twitter: After a landslide victory, State House elect Shaun Scott has earned a meme. ???????? pic.twitter.com/RNI4iERKsK — Shaun Scott ???????? (@eyesonthestorm) November 6, 2024 Joever: Yesterday, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the nation to concede she had lost the 2024 presidential election. She kept her remarks very positive, very boilerplate Democrat. If she truly believed Trump is the threat to the American people he is, she should have come for blood. But, no. The Democrats love to capitulate to the right. And, it's part of why they lost so spectacularly. They championed an extreme and inhumane immigration platform, shrugged their shoulders at Israel’s utter decimation of Gaza, and totally abandoned working people crushed by the weight of the affordability crisis. I know you’re smart and you already know this, but as the #Resist libs start to re-recognize the ever-present threat of fascism—the precarity of reproductive access, queer and trans liberation, immigrants’ rights, workers protections, and more—remember that the Democrats' constant sidesteps to the right landed us here. well, as long as you had fun! https://t.co/FtJ9HJ4T8P — Lead Actor from Pixar’s Sodas (@ByYourLogic) November 7, 2024 Trump transition begins: President-elect Donald Trump’s allies have started lobbying for positions in his administration. According to CNN, Trump will use these positions to “reward” those who have remained loyal to him. That’s also a key feature of his plan: make the administrative state, or what they often call the “deep state,” more friendly, thus radically expanding the executive's power and efficiency. Some top positions seem narrowed down. Trump’s likely considering 2024 co-campaign manager Susie Wiles, his former budget director Russ Vought, CEO of the America First Policy Institute Brooke Rollins, or his former US trade representative Bob Lighthizer for White House Chief of Staff. Rumor has it he will also find jobs for loathsome little rat Elon Musk and anti-vax nut job RFK. Cool. Off the hook: Trump’s victory may mean the end of his two federal criminal cases related to his attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his mishandling of classified documents. His team delayed the cases until after the election, banking on a victory so Trump could fire special counsel Jack Smith and end the cases. As for his New York hush money case, Trump is scheduled for sentencing later this month, but his team will likely argue he’s entitled to constitutional protections afforded to sitting presidents after his election. Solidarity: Yesterday, Cascade PBS workers staged an informational picket outside their workplace to pressure their bosses to meet their three demands in their contract: higher wages, better benefits, and strong workplace protections. And, boy, do they deserve higher wages. According to their press release, the Cascade PBS CEO made nearly seven times the average unit member’s salary in 2023. Greed is a fucking disease. Today at noon, @CascadePBSUnion members used our lunch break to rally for fair wages and a fair contract. ala Salami Rose Joe Louis's Dream Pop Makes Catastrophic Ecological Degradation Sound So Good By www.thestranger.com Published On :: Mon, 11 Nov 2024 11:38:00 -0800 Salami Rose Joe Louis plays Madame Lou's on Monday, November 11. by Dave Segal Recording for Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label, Salami Rose Joe Louis (Lindsay Olsen) has blazed a distinctive trail in that fertile sector of California's underground where electronic music and jazz converge. On early releases by this multi-instrumentalist and producer—such as 2019's Zdenka 2080—Olsen sings in a hushed, dulcet manner over sparse, melodious electronic music that wears its jazz inflections gracefully. Faint echoes of '90s and '00s introspective, minimalist IDM (intelligent dance music, if you don't know) acts such as Múm insinuate themselves, too. It's ultimately dream pop, but not in the cloying way manifested by the genre's try-hards. With 2023's Akousmatikous and this year's collab with Flanafi, Sarah, SRJL's rhythms get jazzier and the instrumentation fuller, with help from Soccer96 and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, among others. The songs are more kinetic while the vocals retain their breathy, Julee Cruise-like sweetness. The music's levitational feel and smooth propulsion belie lyrics about catastrophic ecological degradation and the dangers of propaganda/disinformation. Enchanting listeners through understatement and mutedly sparkling tones, Olsen offers the most pleasant dystopian sci-fi soundtracks extant. For this show at Madame Lou's tonight, she'll be joined by guitarist Flanafi, bassist Tone Whitfield, and drummer Luke Titus—most of whom played on the exceptional new Salami Live at 2131 North Kacey Street EP. Salami Live at 2131 North Kacey Street by Salami Rose Joe Louis featuring Flanafi, Tone Whitfield, Nazir Ebo Salami Rose Joe Louis plays Madame Lou's Monday, Nov 11, 7:30 pm, $21, 21+. ala The Sea And Cake - Car Alarm (Thrill Jockey) By www.almostcool.org Published On :: 2008-12-04 Despite Car Alarm being the eighth album from Sea And Cake, and despite my love of many bands who share members and locale, I have never reviewed an album of theirs on this site. I guess this is as good of any place to start, as it's one of their most solid releases in some time (although, to be fair the group has never really stumbled in a major way). Although the group has been together for fifteen years now, albums have usually arrived at a more drawn-out pace, but for this twelve-song, forty-minute release they went straight into the studio right on the heels of a long tour in order to try to capture the energy and spontaneity properly. ala How to Set Up Your HomePod to Recognize Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Send Notifications to Your iPhone or iPad By www.applevis.com Published On :: Fri, 21 Apr 2023 07:20:52 +0000 Apple has recently activated a feature that enables the HomePod and HomePod mini smart speakers to recognize the sound of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and send a notification alert to your iPhone or iPad. In this episode of our podcast, Thomas Domville walks us through the process of setting this up.The Sound Recognition feature uses the always-on microphone inside the HomePod to listen out for a home's existing smoke and carbon monoxide detector. When it hears the alarm, the HomePod sends a notification to your iPhone or iPad via the Home app. This means you don't need to invest in new internet-connected smoke alarms systems, as the HomePod can simply enhance the utility of your existing "dumb" offline smoke alarms. If you have HomeKit-compatible security cameras in your house, the notification will include a live video feed so you can remotely assess what's happening. To enable Sound Recognition, follow these simple steps: open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad, then navigate to the Home Settings -> Safety & Security screen. There, you can enable the Sound Recognition feature. In addition, you can manage critical notification alerts from supported safety and security devices in your home, and even allow home members to "check in" and listen to the sounds in the home. It's worth noting that the Sound Recognition settings can also be accessed via a HomePod's dedicated Settings. Simply perform a long press on the HomePod's tile in the Home app to access its settings.(If the Safety & Security section is dimmed out, ensure your HomePod and all other Apple devices are up-to-date with the latest software. ala Did I see someone using some sort of posture alarm while running? By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Mon, 10 Oct 2022 09:06:42 -0800 This was my experience this morning: I'm cycling, and I see this guy running, opposite direction to me. He has a cap on, and on top of the cap was what (at first) I thought was a light. Then I thought maybe it was a camera. Then as he got closer I thought it was a donut, like maybe an orange cream filled or something. then as I got closer I heard very regular beeping that I'm pretty sure was coming from the not-donut. And then I couldn't tell what it was, apart from it was orange and about 2 inches tall, maybe cylindrical or donut-shaped. My best guess is that it was some sort of device to help him regulate head/posture, kind of like "teach kids to walk while balancing books on their head". Google is not helping. ala As New Zealand Police Pledge To Stay Unarmed, Maori Activists Credit U.S. Protests By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Thu, 11 Jun 2020 19:44:00 +0000 Although New Zealand is about as far — in miles, at least — as you can get from Minneapolis, protests have erupted there over the killing of George Floyd. The Indigenous Maori people in particular have pushed back against police use of force, which disproportionately affects them. At first glance, the context seems quite different. New Zealand police don't usually carry firearms. The reason goes back to the 19th century British aversion to creating a police force too much like a military. In general, if New Zealand police officers need to use a gun, there is one in a lockbox in their car that they can use with a supervisor's permission. But after a white nationalist gunned down 51 people in two mosques last March in Christchurch, New Zealand's police introduced a pilot program to send heavily armed police teams on patrol in three communities. One of these communities was around Christchurch. The other two were far away in counties near the city of Auckland. The police said it would Full Article

CLAIRE STREMPLE, BYLINE: The boardwalk-lined streets of Skagway, Alaska, are usually filled with tourists by midsummer. But this year, the streets are quiet. REBECCA HYLTON: I became unemployed March 13. STREMPLE: Like many people in town, Rebecca Hylton has depended on the tourism industry for decades. She ran marketing for a local brewpub. But no cruises means no business. She couldn't pay her mortgage until she and her 7-year-old son got their first $2,000 from the local government. Then she spent a little money downtown. ala Susan Rice Talks Of Balancing Career And Motherhood, Reflects On Benghazi By gpbnews.org Published On :: Tue, 08 Oct 2019 02:40:00 +0000 Looking back at more than 25 years in public service, Susan Rice — former U.N. ambassador for the United States and national security adviser to President Barack Obama — describes much of her career as a balancing act. Sometimes, that meant toeing the line between her personal and professional life. "My now 22-year-old son, in fact, learned to walk in the halls of the State Department," recalls Rice in an interview with NPR. "And there were those who thought that was a little bit inappropriate for the staid halls of the State Department." But luckily, she says, she had the support of then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Other times, Rice had to balance her ambition with her identity as a person of color: At the age of 28, having just started her career in government, Rice turned down a position working on African policy for the Clinton administration out of fear of pigeonholing herself. She worried "this predominantly white national security establishment would see [her] as Full Article

ala Jeff Sessions Loses Comeback Bid For Alabama Senate Seat By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Wed, 15 Jul 2020 01:18:00 +0000 Updated at 4:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday Jeff Sessions has lost a bid to regain his old Alabama U.S. Senate after falling from grace as President Trump's attorney general. Sessions had been hoping for redemption after enduring months of relentless ridicule from Trump that eventually led to his resignation as the country's top lawyer. But it was not to be. Instead, Sessions conceded defeat to former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, a political neophyte, who handily beat him in the state's runoff election for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. "I leave elected office with my integrity intact," Sessions told reporters. "I hold my head high." Tuberville, 65, who was endorsed by the president in the GOP matchup — edged ahead of Sessions in Alabama's state primary in March but failed to secure a majority of the vote, setting up Tuesday's runoff. Tuberville will now face Democratic incumbent Sen. Doug Jones in November. As the race was called late Tuesday, Trump was Full Article
