Very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) subjects show lower scores in performance-based tests of executive functioning (EF) than control subjects up to young adulthood.

VLBW adults’ perceptions of their EF in everyday life are very similar to those of term-born adults. Parental evaluation of VLBW/small-for-gestational-age adults’ EF is more negative than adults’ self-reports. (Read the full article)

Online Problem-Solving Therapy for Executive Dysfunction After Child Traumatic Brain Injury

Cognitive and behavioral problems after pediatric traumatic brain injury lead to poor functioning across multiple settings and can persist long-term after injury. Executive dysfunction is particularly common; however, there is a paucity of evidence-based interventions to guide treatment.

This study is among the largest randomized controlled trials performed in pediatric traumatic brain injury. It demonstrates the ability to use an online problem-solving-based intervention to improve caregiver ratings of executive dysfunction within 12 months after injury. (Read the full article)

Effects of the FITKids Randomized Controlled Trial on Executive Control and Brain Function

Physical activity programs have been shown to have positive implications for children’s cognitive performance and brain structure and function. However, additional randomized controlled trials are needed to determine whether daily physical activity influences executive control and its neural underpinnings.

The randomized controlled trial, designed to meet daily physical activity recommendations, used behavioral and electrophysiological measures of brain function to demonstrate enhanced attentional inhibition and cognitive flexibility among prepubertal children. (Read the full article)

Preterm children often experience poor executive function (EF; skills underpinning adaptive, goal-directed behavior, and essential for positive academic, occupational, and social outcomes). EF matures across adolescence, but the nature and course of EF deficits for preterm adolescents is not well-described.

Extremely preterm/extremely low birthweight adolescents demonstrated small-to-medium deficits across multiple EF domains compared with normal birthweight controls. Preterm children improved on some EF aspects from age 8 to late adolescence relative to controls, but not on parent-rated behavioral EF. (Read the full article)

The President announced on Tuesday, March 28th at the Environmental Protection Agency his new Executive Order based on protecting 75,000 US coal jobs by threatening over 3 million US clean energy jobs.

The order directs officials to review the Environmental Protection Agency regulations on new and existing power plants, withdraw the Obama administration’s “social cost of carbon,” which puts a price on greenhouse gas emissions, end a moratorium on new coal leases on federal land, review regulations on methane emissions from natural gas systems, end a guidance for agencies to consider climate change, and end Bureau of Land Management restrictions on hydraulic fracturing.

The Trump administration has not yet released the text of the order  which is based solely on saving coal and other fossil jobs, but a senior White House official shared details with reporters in a call on March 27th.
